Memorabile, in a mostly good way. We did not know it but a very popular dinner spot right near Piazza Stesicoro. It has a busy, bustling ambience. We waited about 30 minutes for a table while sipping an Aperol at the street-side bar tables and while also being watched over for our well being. Once our party was seated, service was prompt and friendly but "get right to business" as there are tables to wait-- much appreciated--however, thing is, the follow through was not there as our waiter got caught up in watching a set piece direct kick in Espania v. Italia (Euro24) and brought out a dish very late which is the reason for the lost star (ok, understood important play but don't make me wait, especially not standing right in front of me! The "tip" reflected my feelings on that.) Setting that aside, the food, the main show, was beautifully prepared and served with simple but distinctive style. The octopus salad was beautiful in every way--fresh, seasoned simple. Rigatoni Alla Norma was the perfect complement. There is a range of dishes across a range of prices to suit just about any pocketbook. All in all, this is a place to dine Sicilia-style at least once. read more

On a rainy day we stumbled into a small street where many people were waiting on sidewalks on both sides. We found this trattoria, checked Yelp reviews and put our name on the waiting list. Within 15 minutes we were given a table. We were small eaters and we ordered Rigatoni alla Norma, small grilled octopus (the waiter counted the feet to make sure there were 8), a mixed salad and a glass of red wine. All dishes were very delicious. And we were surprised to find out all cost 26.50 Euro. No wonder there was a line. We'll return if we have a chance. This was the worst food I have ever eaten! In fact, Le linguine ai ricci di mare was INEDIBLE and it was the most expensive pasta dish on the menu by far!!! It was cold and absolutely disgusting and must surely be a scam to those who don't understand what food should taste like. I am no food Prima Dona, so had the three other people dining with me taste it. None of them could believe how awful it was and couldn't take another bite. We can't even describe how bad it was, though the word "pee" was universal. We just set it aside and forgot about it. The rest of the food was mediocre to bad and we tried so many things. And they only offered white or red wine in a carafe, which was horrible. No choices of wine beyond this, which is insane in Catania!! Im all for house wine, but this was terrible! A true tourist trap in every sense of the word. The location was great, and it was cheap, but those were the only redeeming qualities to report. Do not eat here!!! Ever!!! I drove into Catania late & was starving so I asked the hotel concierge for a food recommendation. He recommended this restaurant which was great cause the had pasta with squid ink which is one of my favorite dishes ever. As I walked in I noticed their open glass raw meat & fish display which told me everything was fresh. The restaurant is huge and has many levels to it. This restaurant was pretty crowded so it took a few minutes for the server to greet me. They brought me an English menu which made things easier. The first thing I noticed is that the prices were very reasonable so why not order a bunch of stuff? When I'm near water I always order seafood so I ordered some grilled prawns & raw oysters. I don't understand the 1st plate, 2nd plate etc concept so I just ordered a whole bunch more stuff. I ordered my fave pasta with squid ink, a salad and horse meat steak. Yes, I said horse meat. I know it's taboo in the USA but when in Rome...and honestly I was curious. The oysters were just ok...the prawns so overcooked and rubbery that it was an insult to the prawns that gave it's life. If I could've communicated that to the server in Italian I would've sent it back but I couldn't so I paid for it. The squid ink pasta was very good and satisfied my craving. The horse steak came highly recommended by the server but honestly I found it super bland. I took two bites and left the rest. I was not impressed by this restaurant. I have to assume that there are better restaurants in Catania to try. However, it was full with locals so perhaps their palates are different? read more

We came in from a recommendation from tour guide. What an experience it was wonderful. The presentation started as they took us over to the food in a refrigerator before it was cooked to pick out our meal. This was epic. Carmela our waiter who is practicing his English was a pleasure. The wine which Turned out to be house wine was superb. Better make reservations we arrived here at 8 o'clock and only inside dining, empty inside. Atmosphere very comfortable though. Inside dining is filling up. Tomato and onion salad is very good. Stumbled upon this gem on our first night in Catania... while their English was not fantastic, they tried and provided very good service. The food was fantastic! We had the pennette alla Norma which tasted as Nonna would make it as was the Farfalle alla Salmone! For Secondo we had the Polpette di carne Cavallo which was grilled to perfection! Perfect as was the breaded Sicilian rolls (with parma ham and cheese). The insalata with fresh fennel was delicious as well. Highly recommended for their authentic Catanian fare! Wow what a beautiful place, service and meal providing us with a full Sicilian experience. The place is packed with locals.. So patience is needed, parties are large, but they are truly joyed to accommodate you... English speaking service is limited, but they try much to accommodate and having the food display at the entrance of fresh ingredients truly helps with the translation (TIP: take a moment to browse as you wait for a table - take a picture and POINT your server will appreciate it and your pallet will too). The pricing here is great, it's served family style 4 courses for $15 (weekday) or $20 (weekend) for an arrant of Meat or Fish Dish. Well worth it and the complimentary Sparkling wine to start your dinner (as you wait - classy). We had lots I will highlight our favs the oysters on the half shell, Magnifica light airy with a taste of the sea - not gritty just Fresh. Squid Ink pasta (not to be missed - perfectly cooked and tossed in more squid ink - aww we wanted more but had to save room for the meat course... We enjoyed Grilled Prawns they were charred with head on the shell was partially peeled locking in all the flavor and juices for the crunch - absolutely the best prawns we have had (we've had plenty from the Gulf, Pacific and Caribbean seas) this tops all those! The Simply grilled fish was good, we should have stopped at the shrimp, but if you like white fish grilled and deboned table side - Bon appetit! Okay the Risotto with mushrooms and pancetta- it was creamy and filled with flavor, loved it. The friend calamari with array of fish was good but it's fried (so nothing amazing) the Squid Salad was tender and fresh really lovely way to start. Pasta and marinara can't be duplicated back home ? Simply amazing . We ended with dessert (yep there was more) we enjoyed a lovely ricotta pie flavored with banana and hint of lime with crunchy crust on top and bottom. It was okay for food - the prices were refreshingly very low, especially for the pasta dishes (4 euro) and you get a decent size. The seafood sharing platters were by far the best. The fish menu was also good. One person in the group got Pasta Carbonara but it wasn't creamy and looked like it was cooked at a high heat and the eggs got scrambled and stuck to the pasta.
