I am so happy I went here! I live across the street from here and was in need of a haircut. I had passed by a few times at night and had always enjoyed looking at their decor through the window. Nice plants, cool vintage chairs with jewels, and satisfying blue color scheme. I decided to give them a call to book. Lila was able to work with my schedule and help me within 15 minutes, since her 3:00 pm slot was too late for me. She sat me down after offering me a refreshment and we sat and talked about the shape I wanted. She was honest about what certain suggestions might do, while also being really encouraging and building off my original vision. The previous salon I went to in Portland charged me $90 for a haircut, and it had bounce decor. I appreciated having a queer hairstylist, but felt a bit worries about inconveniencing her with my constant questions and suggestions. (Possibly bc I had a lot more hair to cut off and my appointment was an hour before closing). This experience felt so much better!! I paid $65 for a haircut and it comes with two weeks free of minor adjustments. This made me feel a lot better about paying anything over $30. Lila's haircut was a work of art and I appreciate that I felt safe as a trans masc person there. Let me start with, wow. Honestly, as soon as you walk in, the vibe this place gives off is just so welcoming and fun. I called them an hour before I came in and they had openings on a Saturday! They put me with Julie, who is luckily a magician with fine hair. I told her I wanted shorter hair and she gave me the best recommendations for my hair type instead of just doing what I told her and risking my hair looking ugly. She showed me how to style, what products to use and on top of that she was just so easy to talk to. I really lucked out getting her as my stylist today and I recommend her to anybody!! While Transformation might not be as fancy and modern as some Portland salons, it is very charming and has fun staff. I've been going to Marina for years and she does a great job at my color, cut, and style (I have long, curly, fine hair) and does so with a fun energy and great sense of humor. She listens well and accomplishes what I'm after without issue. The ladies in the salon are always friendly and not snobby, which is refreshing considering some of the salon environments in Portland. Tiffany Crist at Transformations is absolutely an artist. She understands color and chemistry like no other stylist. She took my hair from dark brown to pink to the most perfect platinum blonde. Even more impressive is how healthy she kept my hair. She was so intentional about maintaining my hairs strength and integrity. My hair is soft, full and totally healthy. Tiff is also amazing with cuts and styling. My hair is fine, curly and thin. I love Transformations and Marina in particular. She always does a wonderful job either understanding exactly what I want or helping me figure out what I want/need. And not only that, but I enjoy her company immensely! After my first visit I exclaimed on Facebook that I had found a stylist that laughs and says things like "awesome" as much as I do! If you want a great cut and a fun time see Marina! You will not be disappointed. As for the salon itself, it is cutely decorated with a mix of IKEA and vintage. I always enjoy looking at the jewelry and handmade purses for sale or the vintage hairdryers etc. while I am waiting. Per the Yelp questions - I usually have an appointment, but I didn't the first time. I just walked in. It probably depends on the time of day. They aren't super busy when I'm there, but I am there when most people are working versus going in on a weekend. Also it is street parking only, but I never have an issue. It took me almost 5 years to find a decent hair stylist in this town. Everyone always tells us guys to go to places like Bishops, but that's just frustrating because it's a different hair stylist every single time you go, as they won't allow you to schedule your "person." Not to mention, $30+ to get a clipper haircut and wash, a little extreme if you ask me. But this review isn't about Bishops... I decided to try Transformation Salon almost two years ago. Ummm... THEY NAILED IT! Marina is hands down, the best hair lady ever! So fun to talk to, always does a great job, and doesn't charge an arm and a leg to take care of the mop I'm working with here. I've been going to Marina at Transformations for a couple of years now and could not be happier. First off, she knows what she's doing. Second, her prices are fair and she's always down for fun new things. Third, she's honest. She'll tell you her opinion on what you want done which I really appreciate. And finally, she's hilarious. I always have a great time and get a good laugh (even during an eyebrow wax!). The environment is retro and awesome. My daughter's hair was severely damaged from previous hair dying. We walked into Transformations and were greated with such kindness, no judgment at all. The stylist (Cristy) was able to do a deep conditioning on her hair and then trimmed up the dead ends to create a beautiful style. My daughter is beaming and so thankful. 5 hours, two appointments (the second one was to "fix" the first) and $120 later, my hair is fried, uneven and splotchy. I told Cristy I wanted a subtle balayage. I made this clear. I had reference pictures. It wasn't a complicated request. She said, "great! Perfect" Halfway through the process she said, "your picture looked like a balayage but that's harder to do than people realize." It would have been nice to know that it wasn't something she could do ahead of time. Instead I got chunky streaks on one side and a muddy grey brown on the other. She offered me a THIRD appointment to try to fix the first two but I was done. I just wanted to go home. What was supposed to be a way to treat myself became an ordeal to get through. Now I just have to wait long enough to have a different hair dresser fix it. Sorry Cristy, but this was really bad. read more

Absolutely fantastic! Cristy was one of the first people to arrive (nearly beat me there!) on the day of my wedding, so extremely punctual. Very responsive to feedback during our trial, she got me exactly to the look I envisioned in under an hour and replicated it perfectly on the day. I love how she subtly tied in the colors of my flower crown while still giving me a natural look. My husband cried when he saw me for the first time and one of his little cousins mistook me for a princess. What more can I say? The products she used were so reliable, I went to an after party 8 hours later and my hair and makeup were still flawless. You know how people say "it's only hair, it'll grow back?" I disagree. Your hair is no minor thing! It's been years since I've been happy with a hairdresser. I might be a little bit of a difficult customer, since I don't always know what exactly I want done, I just want it to look good. But I just haven't found someone compatible or competent or whatever. Then I found Jessi at Transformation Salon. I actually discovered her through Craigslist. (I'm an avid fan of that site.) She was offering a free cut with color, and had posted some pics of her work that looked good, so I decided I'd try her out. I liked her from the beginning. I had arrived with a good sense of what I wanted my hair to look like, but I wanted to find a good pic to show Jessi. She actually took the time to browse through magazines with me. I liked that. I mentioned I wanted a hairstyle that's easy to care for, not real high maintenance. She agreed and added the following magical words: "I think hair should look like hair." I hate when you go to a salon and the people make you feel bad because your hair (or your vanity, for that matter) are not your life. I like to look good, but I don't have much time to devote to that cause. I really like her down-to-earth attitude. But then comes the best part... excellent cut, AWESOME color. She did exactly what I wanted, when I couldn't even really tell her what that was. I like her because she listens, she asks questions, she has good taste, she is very friendly (but not in the "trying too hard" way) and she is just an all-around cool person. It also helps that the salon is charming, casual and comfortable. And by far the most important thing of all is that it's been about a month now and every single time I check my hair in the mirror, I think: "I love my hair." Today my wife went in to Transformation Salon to inquire about getting Dreadlocks, and was told by a stylist but not Cristy, her opinion about Dreadlocks which were that they were dirty and stinky and that people don't wash their hair, but if she wanted Dreads she could probably get them done in North Portland. read more

Marina is the best and she unexpectedly cuts 4 of my friends hair! I have long curly, very thick hair and she is fast, funny, reasonably priced and does a fantastic job. She has me highlighted, dry, and even straightened in about 2.5 hrs! A nice beer or some wine and funny conversation makes the time fly. I've been to Transformations a few times now. The salon is very cute, bright, clean and friendly. I always schedule my haircuts with Marina. She's a great stylist and she makes me laugh. I get bored easily and usually have a hard time sitting still in the stylist chair. However, Marina is quite entertaining and gives awesome haircuts lickity split. She's not only great with chitchat/small talk, but she also makes sure to find out exactly what I want done with my hair. She asks questions and offers suggestions which is great for me since I never really know what I want. Transformations is also extremely reasonable price wise. Yep, Marina is the best. I won a free haircut in a raffle at the Woodstock street fair about 7 years ago, and she was the person who called to tell me I won. I booked with her and have been getting my hair done by her ever since. She totally gets what I want, and is able to achieve it. What's more, I do not have to take out a mortgage to pay for these services. Marina is super chill, down to earth, and funny. What's most important is that I never go home and get that "what have I done?" feeling, which can happen if a stylist is a bad listener, and strong-willed and then gets all experimental on your head. Marina is not going to pressure you to do what she wants, but she will be straightforward with you if your concept is either unachievable, or won't look good on you. Anyway, what a stroke of luck. I went to get my hair done and saw Tiffany who I believe is hair guru at this point. I have a very hard explaining what I want and I'm very picky with the outcome, luckily she can see the vision and practically read my mind. I got a cut and color and it was exactly what I wanted. I like my hair layered to almost a shag but not a shag and she nailed it. My layers lay, bounce and curl up perfectly with no maintenance and my color blends so well it looks like I was born with it which is exactly what I wanted. Just got a haircut by Karen. I had not had a haircut in at least four months, plus had bad grow out from bleaching and coloring my hair some years ago. Essentially my hair was a blob of frizz and I had no idea what to do with it. I told Karen had no idea what I wanted other than I wanted to cut all the dead hair off and she suggested an A-Line bob which I was immediately terrified of. She so my fear and told me she could cut off some of the damage and layer it instead to preserve the length, but I thought it over while she washed my hair and decided to trust her opinion. I'm so glad I did, it is honestly the best haircut I have ever had. My hair looks healthy and fresh, and overall sophisticated and trendy. I was so scared between having a round face with short hair, and afraid of getting a 'Can I Speak To Your Manager' haircut that this is something I would have never tried. Okay, I've been going to see Cristy for my "transformation" for 12 years now and she continues to transform me into the beautiful gal that I am. I am constantly amazed at the work she does. She really listens to me and helps me decide what type of cut/color would be right for me. She has a gift. The entire experience is fun. Do you want wine, or tea, or water, etc.? Went in today for a basic haircut, with high expectations based on the other yelp reviews. Unfortunately, I received one of the worst -- if not the worst -- haircuts of my life. I told the stylist (Lisa) that I wanted layering done in both the front and back of my hair, and a v-shape cut style for the back. She seemed to understand this and all was going well. Then, at the end of the haircut, she turns me around to show me my hair, which to my dismay and shock was cut straight across. She then explicitly tells me "I didn't set the cutting up right so I couldn't layer it, and it's too short now to fix." Seriously? She literally couldn't even do the extremely basic cut I asked her for. It's like she just wanted to cut my hair however she wanted, and completely disregarded what I wanted done. She also offered no apology, and didn't seem to acknowledge that she had screwed up at all. In addition to this, the left side of my hair was left about a half an inch longer than the right side, and the layering on the front of my hair isn't symmetrical at all. To say I'm disappointed in this salon and their services is an understatement. I'd go back to get the asymmetry fixed, but I'm honestly too scared they'll screw it up again. I'm just going to have to wait a couple of months for the hair to grow back and to get it cut at a legitimate salon. Seriously, avoid this place at all costs. read more
