I first walked into the West Wind Schools Alameda Dojo because it was conveniently located smack dab in the middle of the Park Street Shopping District (5 bus lines get here, there's a parking garage right down the street, it's a comfortable riding distance from anywhere in Alameda, I walk here...). After about a year, I have come to think of West Wind as the center of town where local people of all ages and walks of life can come to learn martial arts, stay in great shape, and be a part of something bigger than themselves. My experience here so far has been great.... The instructors are profoundly well-educated, enthusiastic, and dedicated to their students' development. Seriously, the people who run this place are just so awesome (hard to put into words, but I'm getting a little choked up here actually - I know that's sappy but it's totally true!). Being a student at West Wind Schools is like having a family of super-heroes! Gushy stuff aside - I really can't believe I lived in the Bay Area for so long without any self-defense training. Child or adult, man or woman - if you live in the Bay Area, you need to know basic self-defense. I don't know about the other locations, but the Alameda dojo has a super flexible schedule that enables anyone to get discounted introductory classes, so call and talk to them right now! DO it! I have a deep sense of gratitude for West Wind Schools Alameda. I hope they stay right there forever and keep doing exactly what they're doing. Go A-TEAM!

Bottom line: I love it. For me, Aikido is both an escape and an exercise. The art is challenging, physically and mentally and requires one be alert, agile, strong and flexible. I try and practice several times a week which is very easy to do here. The other people on the mat are engaged and kind and look out for one another. There are also a variety of classes to choose from (for adults there are 530 am, 9am and 6pm classes, and one on Saturday, and for kids there are many options to choose from after school and also on Saturdays). Speaking of kids! Training with my own kids is a real joy. It's a fun activity we can do together and Aikido exemplifies, and teaches, important values about capability, respect, effort and diligence. 10/10 can recommend!

I had always had a very negative connotation around the gym and held a deep belief that it wasn't a space for my body to inhabit. From the initial Zoom call to our first session, Luca's attentiveness made me feel truly supported and understood, easing my anxieties. Luca's approach to mobility and strength training is grounded in listening to your body without limiting it. I felt incredibly encouraged by the pace, but also challenged to dig into the strength I already have. Luca pays amazing attention to form and breath, laying the foundations that accommodate a variety of body types. I always leave feeling grateful for the workout, the lessons learned, the conversations, and the confidence I've gained through this supportive community at Radically Fit!
