There…read moreare platforms in either direction and a small waiting room for those like me on my last trip who had missed the train to Edinburgh by one minute since the bus from St Andrews wasn't timed properly to get us there for the train. Therefore, I had to wait 30 min for the next train, which them proceeded to be a slow 1 1/2 hour train to Edinburgh instead of the 50 minute train. Sad day! I was waylaid at the Leuchars station like a beached whale unable to do anything. In short, it's rediculous that St Andrews doesn't have its own station and the Leuchars station is a rather pathetic one.

The new ticketing system has made the place safer too because you now need a ticket to produce before you even get through to the track edge and near the trains, this also stops people form getting on the trains then not paying. The kiosk has seen an overhaul too and is now bigger and stocks much more magazines, sweets and drinks for your trip. A great way to travel and a great station to depart from!

The 7 platforms are quite spread out so allow yourself a few minutes for navigation across bridges if you're unfamiliar with the station. Toilets are clean and beyond the barriers so you can leave it right up until the last minute to go - good if you're setting out on a long train journey and would prefer not to have to go on the train. (I don't often mind but as a solo traveller today I'd prefer not to have to haul all my stuff with me to the toilet, and asking someone to get up to let me out.) There's a small kiosk where you can buy snacks - this is before the barriers. Clearly identifiable recycling bins. The departure board can be seen clearly as soon as you walk in the main entrance, you don't have to go hunting for it. I've heard the car park is quite tiny for the amount of footfall this station gets but as a non-driver that's unlikely to affect me. As far as train stations go I'm quite happy with it.

The colleagues are helpful when you find them, though staff on the checkouts can do with a little more training to ensure that they know exactly what they're doing! The children's car seats etc are fitted/demonstrated by a trained member of the management team - which is particularly handy for those who face the rather daunting task of fitting one for the first time! Decent prices too! Some decent offers at the 'power' aisles next to the entrance - though I'd avoid taking your child with you as they seem to want EVERYTHING.

There is a room at the back used for exhibitions and talks. Staff are very friendly and helpful and there is a little shop where you can buy postcards, crafts and other souvenirs quite reasonably priced. There are also plenty of leaflets relating to the area in the entrance hall. One special attraction is the green train - a model of a train which is in a glass case. It is in an interesting setting and goes across a bridge - thought by some to be the route from Montrose to Arbroath - and is very old. To preserve it, the train is only run on certain days but there are usually advertised in the local paper, The Montrose Review, and in the museum. It's interesting - probably not worth making a special trip (the case is not that big!) but it's nice to see it still in use.
