Trailhead Park is a lovely park that's located in Canyon Creek. It has multiple shaded playgrounds and a shaded picnic shelter as well. I sought this place out because it has a number of nice hiking trails. There's even a look trail that will let you go close to five miles without having to turn back. While it looks like the trail dead ends at a fence, if you continue climbing the hill you'll see that the trail continues on to the left about halfway up. Tip: The loop trail is actually a figure eight; not only that but the scenery is very pleasant; there's even cliffs and a small cave :-) The trails here go through an Austin City Park, but the land is actually owned by an HOA so please be respectful and take your trash and dog poop out with you leave. read more

I am only reviewing the trails at the park and from the perspective of a trail-runner. I discovered Trailhead Park last year while Yelping from a nearby restaurant. I had my dog and was looking for a nearby place where I could take her on the trail for a bit. With low expectations I was pleasantly surprised that the trails are legit. The first 1/4 mile is asphalt (don't give up) then you're spit out into the trail system. I was not prepared to run so I hiked out about 2 miles and happened upon the HUGE Majestic Oak and returned to the trailhead. I planned on returning with my running gear. Route: The trailhead is at the very rear of the park just past the soccer field. Take the asphalt trail to where the fun begins. After a steep drop just continue on to the right. Very shortly you will cross a jeep road...take the trail just a little ways to the right and continue in the same general direction. The lower trail kinda stinks (literally.) The next mile or so is really nice with occasional rollers. Just before you exit this area you'll cross 3 or 4 nice rollers that I've dubbed "Nessie." You'll now be in the middle of a pretty decent hill in a big open area. Head uphill to the right towards the gated enclosure (I think this is an old cattle feed contraption.) The next trail entrance is on the opposite (left) side of the wide jeep road. Shortly after entering this trail system you'll encounter the fence that borders the Balcones Preserve. Hug the fence all the way to the end then hang left. About 100 yards up you'll take a right (don't worry, you'll come up the fence line trail you're splitting from and won't miss out on it) and will meet up with the Majestic Oak shortly. I've read that it is possibly the third largest oak in all of Travis County. I believe this is about 2 miles in. As you marvel at its wonder be sure to take a glimpse at the trail that goes behind the tree. You'll take that later to connect back to the fence line trail I just touched on. The main trail continues past the tree and splits into a "Y." This area can get very muddy for a bit. The right stem of the Y is very short (maybe 2/10 of a mile) but very steep. The left stem is closer to a mile and is a nice and gradual uphill. There are two options...go up and down each stem OR go up either, run a half mile or so through the neighborhood and go down the other stem. If you go up the left option you'll end up on Boulder. Take a right then take another right onto Indigo Brush. Take it to the very end to a right at the dead end. The top of the right stem of the "Y" will be just to the left of the water pump thingy. Confused yet? Whichever way you take just head back towards the tree and take the trail behind it to the fence and back to the park. This loop gets me about 5.6 miles if I go up and down each split and about 5.2 if I connect them via the road. The trail is usually very quiet, I only know a few runners who actually use it. Keep an eye out for wild hogs all around the tree area. Happy running! read more

The 3 stars is for the trail. The playscape gets 5 stars. The trail is beautiful and very shaded. There is a creek that runs along side of it but im not sure of the cleanliness of it so I wouldnt personally mess with it. The trail is easy and paved or dirt road. Some parts are rocky on the path. My complaint is that there is a section of the path where you smell a strong odor of sewage. The smell is in the air for about 30 seconds which isn't a lot but it's very strong and I imagine it would smell worse in the heat of the summer. But other then that, the fact that is shaded is great for those Texas summers. It's a great park for elementary age kids with a beautiful playscape. read more

I walked from my apartment on Boulder Ln down to Trailhead Park since I had driven by a few times and thought it looked cool but I had never stopped to check it out. The park has a covered swing set as well as a covered wooden playground in addition to a few multi-purpose fields and a one hoop basketball sport court. When I walked through there were some soccer as well as lacrosse nets on the fields and also a baseball backstop. If you want to bring a picnic lunch there is a covered pavilion as well as a few outlying picnic tables with grills. Both water and restrooms are available at the pavilion. If you continue walking through the park you'll notice a small paved trail leading through some of the trees at the backside of the park. This path goes to two benches and then an unpaved trail continues to go on. The trail as far as I could tell is not a loop and it puts you out on Brimfield Rd but you can walk back to the park from there for a 2.5 mile loop. The trail starts off really close to the back fences of some houses but soon (especially after reaching the unpaved trail) the trees become too thick to see the houses and you feel secluded, with only the fleeting glimpse of a roof to remind you where you are. There is some elevation change in this trail as it goes into the canyon and follows the creek there for a while, and the climb up to Brimfield Rd is a bit abrupt. I came around the corner, saw it, and stood there in disbelief for a bit as this was the tail end of my walk (or so I thought). I think part of the reason the trail is there is so city workers can access the underground pipes, which judging by the occasional whiff near the out of place manhole covers are sewage. This is the only reason I'm not giving this park a five star review. With all the options available at Trailhead Park I'm sure I will be coming back many times. read more

Wonderful park! We were visiting from out of town and found this park nearby. Lots of open space. The playground was covered and accessible. Lots of shade trees. Kids had a great time and wore themselves out, yay! read more

It is now open again after some downtime due to reconstruction. What an awesome park for the kiddos. There's a huge playscape cover that offers plenty of shade. This will be a great option in the summer. Lots to do and very thought out. Even the drive in was pretty. If you like taking your kids to the park, this is one of the best out there read more

This a very clean and well maintained park. The play scape is very interactive with plenty to do. The equipment is in pristine condition. My twin toddlers loved it. There's a dummy piano that makes noise, as well as drum set that does the same. There's zip lining, a plastic rock mountain to climb, mini sprinklers, a placard with the 50 States in order of induction, a placard of the alphabet, and one of the planets. There's a bunch of slides. There's covered swings for all ages. This park also has a lot of greenery that's perfect for a picnics there's a couple of soccer fields. They play scape being covered is also plus. I'm definitely going to put this in my rotation when I'm hanging out with my kids. The best part to me is there's a half basketball court, too bad that isn't covered. Only negative is parking is really limited and this isn't a good Park for barbecues due to lack of pits. read more

This park is probably the best park in the entire Cedar Park/Leander/North Austin area. Very easily accessible. Large covered play structure suitable for ages 5-12 (though my 3 1/2 year old loved it too and could easily climb the fake rock walls that are one way of getting up on the structure). There is a small "spider web" (similar to Elizabeth Milburn), and a spinning "web" as well. The swings are also covered, and there is a soccer field as well. There were paths leading towards the back of the fields, which we didn't explore, but it is secluded on the sides from the houses in the area by heavy brush and cedar trees. There is even a small fake grass area with lots of shade perfect for a little picnic. Love this park!!! read more

Pretty nice trail, both times I've gone its been very vacant as I only ran into one or two other hikers. Early in the morning seems best as its so quiet and peaceful that you don't even realize how close to some houses you are. Like the first review says that last hill is a bit steep going up, but coming down is really easy! read more
