The shop was loud and typical for a Saturday morning--until a Black mother walked in with her two sons. The room went completely silent. For several minutes, the atmosphere shifted from welcoming to hostile through nothing but pointed silence and 'shifting eyes.' It was so palpable that the mother eventually bolted out of the shop with her children. The moment they cleared the door, the 'raucous' energy returned as if nothing had happened. It took me leaving the shop to fully process what I'd seen: a room full of people who collectively made a family feel unwelcome. Professional craftsmanship should be about service and community, but that day, it was used to exclude. I'm sharing this now because honesty matters, and no one should be made to feel like a ghost in a public business

I live on the South Shore, but I drive up to Somerville just to see CJ! CJ is perceptive to both the client's desires and also what will look good for each person. He clearly communicates what he plans to do, and he will pause to confirm your approval before continuing if it's a new look for you. This is THE most important quality in a barber, because I might have an idea for my haircut/beard trim in my mind, but the barber may see it differently. And now, since I completely trust CJ's judgement, I could walk in and say "Do whatever you want" and I wouldn't worry at all. It was CJ's judgement that led to my current beard style, and looking back it was obviously the right choice. If you need a new barber and don't know where to go, book CJ at either of The Shop locations. I've been going to CJ for years, so the move to The Shop was a no-brainer. Now I have a kid, and CJ cuts his hair, too - super convenient to get both done with one trip. My kid already had a few haircuts done before going to CJ, and CJ is amazing with kids. All the barbers in the place are respectful when we're there - they even sometimes change the music playlist to be kid-friendly, which is an awareness I really appreciate as a parent. It was clean and his willingness to know what i want was admirable. He made me feel at home right away. Now about the cut, he was bang on. He took time to understand as it was my first time and definitely tried his best to accommodate and explain the pros and cons before he cut.
