I had a very uncomfortable experience at Trader Joe's. I was shopping for groceries and purchasing a tote bag within the posted per-person limit when a staff member (a woman with red hair working at the sample area) began following me around the store. Her behavior made me feel like I was being watched and singled out, which was both upsetting and unsettling. It felt like I was being racially profiled, as she appeared to alert other staff to keep an eye on me and my girlfriend. We were simply shopping in casual clothing (sweats and slippers), and there was no reason to suspect us of anything inappropriate. Because of how uncomfortable the situation became, we decided to cut our shopping short and only purchased a banana. At checkout, I explained what had happened to the cashier and even asked whether theft of a $3.99 tote bag was really such a concern. It was frustrating to feel judged over something so minor, especially when we had no intention of doing anything wrong. Overall, the experience left us feeling disrespected and unwelcome. I hope management addresses this, as no customer should feel profiled or uncomfortable while simply trying to shop. read more

The employees are some of the nicest and most helpful people. I love all their products. Giving it a 3 star review as I personally can't shop here often as it produces so much unnecessary waste. Produce uses unnecessary amounts of single use plastic that other companies don't use. It also has a bunch of delicious processed foods that are branded healthy but aren't. read more

Trader Joe's is a solid food shopping option especially if you are seeking a Whole Foods alternative. What always impresses me about Trader Joe's is their employees, their energy and kindness always stands out. Trader Joe's offers the largest variety of ethnic frozen cuisine from a huge variety of cultures. Is anything off the charts unbelievable? Probably not but I can honestly say I have never had anything bad from them. Their meats, cheeses, fruit and vegetables are always beautiful. Their prices are probably 10-20 percent higher than your local supermarket. It is unfortunate that for the most part "us New Jerseyans" are jobbed out of the Trader Joe's Wine experience....thank the NJ state government for that....one corporation cannot have more than 2 liquor licenses in the state which explains why Costco only has 2 locations that sell liquor...yet another reason to get out but I digress. No $2 Buck Chuck for us If you are a good shopper, you can find some difficult to get items at Trader Joe's and you will always get service with a smile. I'm addicted to Trader Joe's. Cold brew, snacks, baked goods, frozen foods are all good. They may not be the "Best of the Best" but value to dollar, TJ's has some good stuff. I've frequented all of the TJ's in the central NJ area. My favorite is the Shrewsbury location. The staff is supper friendly, helpful, understanding and accommodating. The shelves are stocked most of the time and there hasn't been many a time that items were "out of stock". The only exception was during the high of CV-19 but totally understandable since the public was hoarding everything and anything. Over the past few months, since the beginning of CV-19, I've witnessed and experienced the restrictions and easing of CV-19 safety, implemented to insure the well-being of the shoppers. Kuddos to TJ's. Arguably, I felt the safest shopping at TJ's and hence it was a primary grocery store during the worst of CV-19. Sanitation of carts, special shopping hours, crowd control were all in place during the beginning stages of the pandemic. Some of mine and my family's favorites are the cold brew, Brioche French Toast, blueberry waffles, fresh ravioli's and tortellini's, any of their cookies (ginger snaps, dunkers), Hatch Mac and cheese, Pork & Ginger soup dumplings, snacks, organics, beverages, produce, dairy, ice creams, different types of frozen ethic foods are all competitively priced and tasty!! I love this Trader Joe's! Their products are generally amazing and their staff are the coolest/nicest! The location is not the biggest and sometimes it does get crowded, so I recommend going during off-peak times. Also, if there is an item you really like, you may want to call ahead to make sure they have it in stock. Depending when you go, sometimes they can be low on popular items. The only thing holding me back from giving them an extra star is alcohol. If they added a booze section, my life would be complete. read more

I just had THE best experience at Trader Joe's. I love TJ anyway, but today when I was picking up some delicious things, Andy checked my groceries out. He asked about my Wknd plans and I told him I was staying home to keep an eye on my dog who just had surgery and I am worried about her. Trader Joe's is known for its unique products and service. During the holidays I stopped in saddened to find that they no longer sell the canned or frozen crab meat, but one can never leave empty handed. I tried the sample of the pumpkin pie they were providing and the sample of the Laos Bolaven Plateau coffee, and bought them both. I also had to grab my favorite gorgonzola crackers with just enough salt and cheesy flavor, that curbs a crave. I was writing this to share how delicious the pie is and Hope they have it after the holidays. The coffee was also delicious, but it's the whole bean and i didn't realize that in advance. I am a TJ gal. coming from California we had one 2 blocks from our house and we shopped there all time and they had the booze and $2 buck Chuck. Moving to NJ, the closest is the Shrewsbury location. So as we were car shopping this past weekend, I wanted to stop in and see the store, pick up the TJ Green Sauce, Mint tea, jarred olives and well, whatever else I wanted that I have gone without for a while. The produce and flower section had been really picked through so they were mad restocking, the frozen section had great prices on frozen fish and I love that they still have the individual frozen lunch/dinners that are downright tasty- if you haven't tried them give it a go. They heat up well. Mini-Me picked up a bag of Habanero Chips and they were tasty on the ride home. The store was PACKED I mean crazy packed and of course they do not sell booze, no surprise there, its seems to be a common theme in NJ. This TJ has most of the same stuff I got in Cali, thank goodness but I didn't see where I could sign up for the local "TJ Flyer". Anyway- its close to home (by Jersey standards) and I'll be shopping there a lot more. read more

I wish I had a Trader Joe's closer to home. Each time I get to travel near one I return home with a suitcase or trunk full of goodies. The Brooklyn Chocolate Babka bread here is delicious. I've never seen it at other Trader Joe's locations. Maybe it's here due to the proximity to NY? Maybe it's a new product? So many good apples to choose from as well, and all of them in great condition without bruises or being dried out. Do yourself a favor and try a Cosmic Crisp apple. So big, so good. Super friendly cashiers too. I'm visiting and had no idea NJ did away with shopping bags (yay!). I had a cartfull of treats and the cashier gave me a legitimate Trader Joe's reusable shopping bag. read more

This is the only Trader Joe's in Central Monmouth County that I am aware of. A nice, friendly upscale food market. Prices are a bit higher than your larger local markets, but I like the smallness of it, and besides, they put out a good quality product. Their frozen foods are especially strong in various cuisines, but their meat department is somewhat lacking in variety, possibly due to space limitations. The staff is always friendly. Ample parking. I always seem to buy items that I don't really need but are curious to try. Most are a welcome addition to the household. We call that recreational shopping. They carry their own brand and they don't send out circulars in Sundays papers. Perhaps this is one of the reasons they're savings are passed down to us. Most of the workers there have smiles on their faces and will stop whatever they're doing and takes you to the aisle your item is if you're not sure where it is. Or if you wanted to try a taste of something before you purchase it, they'll open it up and let you sample it. I've done that with their chocolates. I love dark German chocolates over the dark Swedish chocolates. They're snack haven but they also have many wonderful frozen prepared foods. They carry many Asian inspired foods and their soup dumplings are but bad at all. Fresh flowers and fresh vegetables and fruits. Best prices around for organics too. Their cereals are just a bit off but their selection of cheeses makes up for the strange taste if their cereals. Yes, give me great cheese at excellent prices and I'll forgive you on everything. It's a treasure hunt every visit! Love the crumbled blue cheese for $3.49 for 8 oz. delicious and affordable. Nice spice selection. Coconut Pancake mix is the bomb. Yummy. Try their flakes cereal with nut clusters. It's delicious! Always seasonal displays and selections. When Christmas rolls around they have chocolate star cookies with non parells that are to die for- I buy boxes and boxes at a time. Bought Honeynut Squash. Not butternot. For $1.49 a piece. They are about 4 x 3 " each. Cooked them in my hybrid microwave whole, unpierced, on the fresh vegetable setting for about 20 minutes. Fantastic! read more

Trader Joe's is always the bomb, and this location is no exception. I wondered why this location didn't have five stars and saw that some people gave it three because the workers "have tunnel vision" or the store doesn't sell wine. OK, the wine part is legitimate criticism but the tunnel vision comment is totally unhelpful. I wasn't greeted with a red carpet when I stopped by yesterday, but nobody was impolite or rude, so it was fine by me! Anyway, I went to TJ specifically for their mochi ice cream. Let me tell you, folks -- this is the real deal. Yes, prices at TJ are higher than most grocery stores in general, but their frozen food section is the bomb.com. If you've never had it, mochi is ice cream wrapped in a slightly doughy rice paper (think spring roll paper). It is delicious, and TJ's is no exception. It comes with six pieces for $3.5 or $4 (can't remember which), so it's not a bad bet if you're already on the market for dessert. So there it is. I've gotten their frozen tater tots in the past (and they're great), but since I didn't get them this time around I'm excluding them from my review. Still, the mochi alone gets five stars! read more

Ok so the Trader Joes organic whole milk is problematic. Only a few brands won't froth up for cappuccinos and this is one of them. What that means most of the time is that there is some additive to the milk. What a sham!! Wherever you are getting your milk for your brand is scamming you or well I won't accuse you directly but buyer beware. read more

Had a very bad, scary experience here. Woman threatened me in the parking lot and followed me into the store over a parking space! Threw her shopping cart into myself and another shopper inside the store. Employees watched and did nothing. Store manager was told but he never came out. Called store manager after the experience and he just said "sorry". Guess it's a good thing no one was more seriously injured. I'll never understand management who isn't "in the trenches" along with its staff leading by example. read more

Prices are super low for most food items. Great selection for organic, vegeterian and vegan lovers... Diary and cheese selection is a bonus! Any TJ location near home or work is great, and this location just happens to share a parking lot with my job! A quick walk for lunch to grab a salad or some groceries is a breeze. Their fresh food and salad section is great, with fair prices and always fresh products. I have yet to try one of their prepared salads that i did not love! For a quick lunchtime run-thru, TJ's sample of the day and coffee station are always great to hit. I have tried some abnormal dishes that I end up purchasing, bringing home, and my mother and I fall in love! This store is setup well and aisles are wide with clear views to everything; Trader Joes is always rolling out new products but continues to have their staples that everyone loves. Prices are great- often cheaper than my local shoprite. And you cannot beat those brown paper bags at checkout!!! It can be a little crazy during busy hours of the day (but I would like to see a Trader Joes that isn't); but staff is always welcoming, quick with checkout, and happy to answer any questions or give recipe suggestions! If in the area I stop by as they do have great prices, but never make a special trip. This trader Joe's does not have wine :( I like many of their products that are in the freezer, cans or boxed. I find their produce isn't the freshest and doesn't stay long. Not a fan of their meat department either. I buy many of the freezer stuff for my working family to grab and microwave at work instead of the usual sandwich. They have great prepared frozen foods that are quick and easy in Italian, Indian and Oriental cuisine. Organic brown rice in the freezer, I always stock up on. Mango dessert bars are so good. I live in Toms River and travel to Shrewsberry about twice a month just to shop here. Their prices are great and everything is healthy with a lot of organic options. but please please please put a Trader Joe's in ocean county! Point Pleasant would be great a place. Since this particular location is down the street from work, I think it is a great place to run in and get a salad and some fruit for lunch to take back to the office. As a grocery store on the other hand, I really don't get what all the fuss is about. I don't think it is realistic that you can do all of your shopping here and really don't see the benefit to driving to a Trader Joe's if you have a Wegmans or something near by. I've heard a lot about this place and it certainly doesn't live up to the hype. I do have to give them one compliment though, I've been to this location twice and every time the staff, particularly the cashiers, has been incredibly friendly and make you feel welcome. Bottom Line: If you're in the area and need to pick up an item or two, it's great, but I would never drive out of my way to shop to here. read more

Prices you can't beat. Love the refrigerated soups, just wish they had them year round. I had to stop buying produce here as the quality in the last year has declined. On a number of occasions I have brought food home to find that it was already bad but because of packaging you can't tell in the store. They need to bring back the 15 items or less aisle. With a number of office buildings in walking distance many people go to just pick up a few items around lunch time only to get stuck checking out behind people with full carts. read more

After much anticipation, we have a Trader Joe's in Monmouth county. Before this store opened a few weeks ago, the closest TJ's were in Princeton and Westfield. So now, in Monmouth county, you are pretty much guranteed to have 5 grocery stores within a 5-6 mile radius of your house. Anyway, I had never been to a Trader Joe's before this one, but I know people go wild for some of their products. So one day after making my weekly trip to Wegman's (in Ocean, I don't have the patience for the Mega-Weg in Woodbridge) and ShopRite, I came back out to visit Joe. Okay, well, #1 the parking lot sucks. I used to work in this shopping complex as a summer job, and it used to be virtually empty. Now it's packed to the gills and it backs up 35 during peak times. #2 The store is A LOT smaller than I anticipated...I guess Fuji was strategic in their set-up, because it certainly didn't seem this small when I ate there. The aisles are narrow, and as is typical of MonCo, people leave their carts in the middle of any sort of pathway. Enter shopping cart bumper cars! Produce selection....no way. Wegman's, Whole Foods and even ShopRite are FAAAAR superior. Skip this. Dairy case....interesting flavors of hummus, loads of cheese varieities, their own brand of greek yogurt (which is cheaper than Fage or Chobani, but I have yet to try). This was a plus! The aisles are full of staples, snacks and frozen foods. They have a lot of interesting, unique and quirky products. Most are their own, in-house brand (sometimes customized to reflect the food ie Trader Giotto's is the Italian line of pasta sauces, Trader Jose for the Mexican/Spanish stuff). They have a whole bulk aisle too. It was too crowded, I skipped. I did pick up some veggie burgers (Masala flavor, SUPER tasty!) and frozen broccoli. Good prices on frozen stuff. Their pre-marinated meats seemed pricey...but they are everywhere. They only had salmon as far as fish goes...and it looked really questionable. So, thumbs down on the meat section. I guess Trader Joes is pretty cool for being an indie-type grocery store...but I think it's way over-hyped. I'd rather split my shopping budget between Whole Foods and Wegman's, since Trader Joe's seems to be an amalgamation of the two. read more

TJ's is not Whole Foods and it's thankfully not trying to be. 'cause Whole Foods--kinda pricey. It's also not necessarily a place to complete your weekly grocery shopping--unless maybe if you live in or are otherwise already in the neighborhood. Nor is it a place to compare brands since selection is pretty much limited to one offering of anything, very often the store's own. But it definitely is a small and relaxed place to buy much of what you need in addition to (healthy, organic, vegetarian, etc.) specialty items and some surprisingly good tasting (and seasonally rotating) frozen and prepared foods (This from someone who eats very little frozen and prepared foods...) at very good prices. Cashiers are friendly and personable as well. It somehow also always strikes me a bit like a place wherein a sitcom would set a random potentially romantic first encounter--like two people reaching for the same jar of shelf stable clarified butter attempting to bond over their Franchese recipes. --I'm making chicken. You? --I'm vegetarian so, yeah, artichoke hearts. --Oh, you're vege--um, uh...I've never heard of using artichokes. Hey, listen, I really need to get to marinated meats, so... Well, okay, that didn't go well. But that's just my (slightly pessimistically skewed) outlook at play; I'm not saying that ever actually happened... And I see I've digressed... Anyway, a recent frozen sweet potato gnocchi was excellent and (somehow) took about six or seven minutes in a sauce pan (with just a few tablespoons of water) from start to finish. Was like magic... A penne in roasted red pepper sauce was similarly good. And though I'm very squeamish about vegetarian versions of meat products, browned in a skillet with a little olive oil, TJ's own brand of Italian sausage subs real nicely for hotdogs, if that's the kind of thing that might work for you. Red Bank-adjacent, it gives me another reason to drive down from Sayreville every month or so. For those who haven't been, it's certainly worth exploring to see what needs of yours it meets, but especially to see what it offers that you didn't know you need. read more
