I took in about 25 new release (2023 or newer) books in great condition and left with a $20 store credit. Came back in a few weeks later and saw the same books I brought in for sale at $15 & $20 price marks. I understand that they buy for less than they sell, But less than a dollar for each book and then more than tripling that price is a giant rip off on their part. Many of the books I brought in didn't even cost $15 when I bought them brand new. Lesson learned Don't waste your money by shopping here. read more

This place is awesome. I've always bought my books from booksamillion and it was just too far of a drive. Then I found this place and the lady there is super nice. You go in TRADE a book and you can buy more. My first time going there I brought in 4 books, she bought 3 out of the 4. I picked out 2 new books and only paid 85 cents. WHAT?! That's amazing. She only charges 60% of the (original) COVER price that helps keep the business open. And as far as a restocking fee it's only 10 cents. Hardly brakes the bank. And the store worker is SUPER nice. I love her. And she's really sweet to my toddler. She distracts him for me while I pick out my books. Or I tell her what I want and she grabs them for me because I normally have my hands full with my hyper child. read more

Having scoured the shelves of many a used bookstore and thrift shops, I enter each one with some idea of what I am looking for and variations there of. The one common theme is that the prices range within a dollar or two ($2.00 at the very most) regardless of pages, cover (hard or soft) in fact, this is probably a major driver of decision making in which store one chooses to use, other than selection. I think the pricing at Trade a Book is based on a percentage of what the actual selling price as marked on the book was, it seemed like 70% or more, of the cost for a new book. For a NY Times best seller, this calculation I would guess works just fine, but for a leisurely read that one will finish with in a few weeks, it is just not reasonable in my opinion. I entered the store, looking for a biography (maybe Presidential or another interesting individual's bio) possibly a historical read (Civil-Revolutionary War-French or Russian revolution-), as non fiction is my current preference. or something along those lines, I found a very limited selection of these genres, as there were only two books that I considered worth reading. The emphasis of the store seemed to be the romantic novels, yet there was a fairly decent area for children's books. I selected a hardcover book on The Battle of Antietam (AKA-Sharpsburg), which had no visible price and 2 children's chapter books which were also lacking a noticeable mark to show the price. Upon checkout, the bill was $11. and change, I was taken back by the total cost. Because I was in a rush, I held my tongue and decided not to voice my displeasure, nor enter into a debate and question as to why the costs were so out of whack, which I normally would do.. I have been exposed many bookstores for many years and have as of yet to be charged the amount, for the literature I acquired previously and definitely will never pay going forward. As I walked to my car, I really felt like I just got ripped off, there is something just strange about getting taken,,, by a used bookstore. Sorry Trade a Book, but your prices are just not in the range of acceptable, unless you offer a cup of coffee with every book's purchase and I mean that most literally. Based on the purchase prices, I have concern of what my previous reads may yield in their trade value, I feel as though I will not be going back to find out. read more

I've been shopping at the store since I was a little girl. My mom started my credit slip when I was in elementary school. Based on two of the reviews here, I think I may need to clarify a few things about how the store works. It really is an amazing experience and the ladies who run both stores are the sweetest I've ever met. So the store is called TRADE a book for a reason. You can bring in a truck full of books and receive store credit for your next truck load of books. The store credit you receive can be applied to any of your future purchases. Essentially, you could walk away with tons of books for practically nothing! If you choose not to go that route, you will pay 60% of the COVER price. Not a sticker. The ORIGINAL cover price. This ensures that the customers who bring in books for trade get the most bang for their buck. The selection in the store is great. But it's also based on what customers bring in. The owner does not go out and buy books. She WILL order books brand new if they are on reading lists for school. You can also leave your name and information and the book you are interested in if they don't have it at that time. When the book does come in, they will call you and save it for you. This has been a god send on many many occasions. I've always enjoyed shopping at both stores and the ladies have helped me out many times. I think it's a really unique experience! read more

The service today was beyond rude. The man was abrupt and changed the trade in policies. I love that I can bring in books I have read and tbey will buy them! I turn right around and replace them from a good selection of several genres. I can always find ones I havent read. Sometimes I can't remember an author's name and they can name the author and several books she has written on minimal information. Fun place if you love books! read more

As a new resident in Summerville I tried this store as it came up in my Yelp search as my local book store. I'm sorry I ever set foot in here. The owner seems nice but she is a con artist. I should have paid more attention to Glenn's review, we live and we learn though. She sells her books at a percentage off the cover price but she will tear off sale stickers, you can see where she tried to remove them, from books bought elsewhere at a discount and still charges full cover price. She also charges a 10 cent restocking fee, something I've never had done anywhere else. If you want an actual good experience, I had a local tell me about a gem in Goose Creek called Dreamalot Books. I tried them and was pleasantly surprised when we went on a Sunday and paid $1 a book for any book under $5 regular charge, she has that sale on Sundays and also 1 day during the week. She does not charge a restocking fee and has an enormous selection compared to this place. If you love to read, like I do, you will love Dreamalot Books. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money here! read more
