City Market was my first stop in San Miguel de Allende--straight from the airport. I had discovered…read moreit simply because it was on the way to the place we were staying. The plan was to run in quickly, grab some bubbles and a few snacks, then head back to unpack and relax for the evening. Our driver dropped us off and we walked into a spacious, upscale market that immediately impressed me. City Market is an extremely nice supermarket with a wide selection that ranges from high-end groceries and fresh pastries to upscale kitchenware, including Le Creuset cookware and other premium cooking items. The fresh pastry selection looked wonderful, and the produce was especially impressive. The avocados were enormous, and the tomatoes looked incredibly fresh. There was also an excellent selection of meats and cheeses--perfect if you're putting together a charcuterie board. I was even able to find my lemon ginger tea, which is part of my morning routine. While most people did not speak English, communication was easy with the help of Google Translate. The next day I returned with more time to stroll through the aisles, and I was even more impressed. The store has an outstanding selection of food, meats, and produce. I was pleasantly surprised to see a small section of Asian ingredients, which meant I could easily make my Chinese breakfast soups in the morning. On that second visit I had filled my cart with quite a bit of food. As I headed toward a regular checkout lane, a gentleman approached, guided my cart over to the self-checkout area, and began scanning and bagging my groceries for me. It was an unexpected level of service, and I was happy to tip him well for the help. Beyond shopping, City Market also has several places to eat inside. Bar Do Mar serves sushi prepared fresh right in front of you. Pintxos offers an impressive menu of roughly 60 homemade dishes. The café area also features a wide selection of coffee beans, along with freshly prepared coffee drinks and teas. Overall, City Market is the place to go if you are looking for a wide selection of foods, pastries and adult beverages while visiting San Miguel de Allende. Whether you need groceries, cookware, or a reliable place for a meal, it's an excellent option to have nearby.

As I had stated with my review of Bayonna in New Orleans, the menu is a rarity in that I would want to order everything on the menu. You will find French bistro classics such as Croque Monsieur, Steak Frites, and Onion soup. There is something for everyone, although I have to say that their liver pate is not to my taste, though it is delicious (it is too sweet and less savory than I prefer). The texture is wonderful. The Croque Monsieur is amazing. Whether under an umbrella or the pergola, El Vergel makes for a lovely, relaxed luncheon, and a nice break from the delicious Mexican food available all over SMA. Reservations are encouraged if you do not wish to take a chance on table availability.

Set in a small charming garden, you'll be surrounded by a well clad and versatile set of SMA expats- a fun way to meet your neighbors! Great for families, and for families with pets (dog friendly!). There is also an under inventoried market that stands beside the cafe, which features an apiary and the city's best honey!
