History
Established in 2008.
Built on the property of Epaphrus Miller's fine 1811 brick house and tavern, Town Hall Theater (then called the Middlebury Opera House) officially opened on February 13, 1884 as a new center for Middlebury's cultural and social life. It hosted a variety of events, from Vaudeville to theatricals, to proms and everything in between.
During the 20th century, Town Hall was a movie house, a furniture store, a Buick dealership, a restaurant, and home to the Knights of Columbus. In 1991, the building was sold to a community group led by Doug Anderson. For years, Doug and the Middlebury community sweated, toiled, and fund-raised to restore Town Hall Theater to its former glory. In 2005, Town Hall Theater's great bell was restored to its tower. In July of 2008, Town Hall Theater officially reopened.
