I sent some…read morepictures to a friend when I visited late at night and the sprawling empty aisles and perspective lines of the rows of the machines had him talking about liminal space. I was sketched out about this place for a long time but my first trip was pretty uneventful. It's not in the best neighborhood and I actually explored a couple abandoned houses nearby while my clothes were in the wash. I guess that's actually eventful, huh? Well, nothing eventful happened inside the laundromat or in the parking lot, though. Everything was chill with not many other patrons and the other customers had the same I'm-just-trying-to-get-this-over-with vibe that I did. I did notice a bunch of the machines were broken but that wasn't such a big deal as this laundromat is the size of a small flea market with rows and rows of machines everywhere. My second visit was cut short. Again, no problems with my fellow launderers. I noticed the place had a bit of a funky smell upon entry, but nothing that was worth packing up and leaving over. Then I noticed even more machines were broken. Red flag, but there's still dozens and dozens of washers and dryers. It's when I get to the change machines that I see a sign that says due to "coin shortage" they're not dispensing change. Three of four are lit up red showing they're all out and the lone machine remaining stays true to the taped up sign and won't inhale my dollar. So damn lame. It's 2024 and the "coin shortage" hasn't been a thing for three or four years. You can find it in the mists of the past along with the "murder hornets". So I pushed my cart back out the door to the big metal bar barriers to keep people from stealing them and loaded my clothes and cleaning supplies back into my Jeep to find another late night laundromat that had quarters. So weak! C'mon, Coin-O-Matic! Coin is in your name!!!! Doesn't it imply coins are automatic there?

The last time I was there a large unleashed German Shepard was sitting by one of the entrances. Fortunately there's two doors here so I didn't have to try to brush past them with a large bag of laundry. The coin acceptors on the machines aren't always so accepting. Several times I experienced the frustration of have a quarter spit right back out at me multiple times or just getting stuck inside without registering as payment and having to pump the coin release button a few times for the 25 cent piece to see fluorescent light again. There's a little lounge area with a beat up but comfy looking old recliner, perhaps two of them. Last Wednesday night a man was sunk deep into the easy chair with a paper bag covered 40. No idea if he was doing laundry while getting his drink on or was just loitering. On a previous visit I saw someone kicked out of here by the attendant on duty and he yelled back through the parking lot and even down the block. I don't know if it was for loitering or what his infraction was but it is possible to be ejected and even banned for here. (The removal stemmed from something on a previous visit.) The music is usually pretty good here. Old r and b, funk and soul. Earth, Wind and Fire was playing on my last laundry errand here. The first time I was here a dude brought his own sound system with bright light up speakers and sat in the recliner playing even more funkier stuff that I've heard here on other visits. (I think I've been here three or four times.) There's two TVs but I think only one works. I've seen a dance party/techno music video show, a basketball game (Brooklyn Nets vs. a team I can't remember) and a grim parade of Detroit's Most Wanted that only added to the sketchy vibe around here. Nothing bad has ever happened to me at Woodward Coin Laundry but I do keep my head on a swivel here. Harbortown Laundromat is still my regular late night laundry spot as it's a bit rundown with some of the same issues (janky machines) but doesn't have my street senses on such high alert. It's more chill over there even though they get more nocturnal patrons. Here and there I might take a walk on the Woodward wild side though. Who knows, maybe someday I'll stop in to wash clothes and be disappointed there's not even any strange characters here.

I had read reviews earlier today before I went, so I WAS expecting it to be good. When I got there and saw the place, at first I wasn't so sure. Then I learned the machines don't take quarters. They have a card system. I was not familiar with that at all. BUT the female attendant was Extremely Patient and Helpful! I wonder if she's the owner? She was excellent at making this a smooth situation for me. She put a reasonable amount of money on the card for me. $10. Helped me learn how to use the washer. The cost was $6.50. She also helped me with the dryers. That cost me $3.00. The dryers are THE BEST of any laundromat I've ever been to. And I'm in my 60s. I will definitely keep this place in mind whenever I need to do laundry and I'm down that way again.

The place was dirty, the parking lot had garbage everywhere. In two of the large washing machines, was.....excrement (ugh). I am totally bummed at seeing this because I liked this place. It's a decent and clean laundromat but Why should I travel miles away from home when I literally live down the street from here to wash my dad's and my clothes. My dad is disabled so I do his laundry for him. I try to come here because it convenient and I don't have to leave him long when I come here. I think this is totally unfair in an Urban Neighborhood and I should be able to put back into the neighborhood by shopping and supporting the businesses in my community in which I have no problem with. I too would like my clothes to be and feel cleaner when I wash them here. Please do better because everybody do not have a car to travel miles away just to wash their clothes like that.
