The Commons is a wonderful neighborhood resource. Great little coffeeshop with some sandwiches. Laundry facilities that are clean and work well. They just opened their Tech Center upstairs that has computers and Internet. I think there's also after school programs for children, there's help for seniors and low income people to get help navigating the various programs or grants that may be available to them. Even if, you don't need laundry, internet/computer access or help with navigating the various programs to help with property taxes, etc. just come in and grab a coffee and a snack. read more

SUCH a cute spot and oh my goodness are Ms. Karen & Mike the sweetest! The sandwiches are de-licious. We got the Mack Ave & the BBQ Bacon BLT and split it (finished in less than 5 minutes). Sooooo good. AND, you can do your laundry while grabbing a snack and a cup of coffee. OR, if you have other errands to run you can drop off your laundry & it'll be ready when you're done. If I had only one sentence: the Commons has thought of everything. I met a friend here to grab coffee and chat for a while, and because I was trying to figure out where to wash my heavy comforters. I picked the Commons because it's close to Pewabic (where I work), is a newer east side business, and generally a cool concept. But what I'd read about it didn't prepare me for the discounts on drinks if you're doing laundry, the option of an all-day refill set-up, reasonable prices if you need to buy laundry supplies, a first-visit discount, a little free library (so you can read while you wash), snacks low in sugar in case you've got kids with you, light lunch options, and not one but TWO play tables for children (one on the ground floor and one upstairs). My latte was on point and the baked goods looked great (my friend's son gave his muffin a ringing endorsement). And prices weren't excessively high for the basic beverages. Staff was happy to provide recommendations for which washer would be the right size for my comforter. I need to verify, but I think they're offering a drop-off service (AKA fluff and fold) also. I highly recommend this place, whether you have laundry to do or not! read more

Hidden gem! It's actually a laundry mat and coffee shop, what a cute idea. Very clean and modern inside. Amazing looking mini pies and giant cookies await while you order. They are speedy and have good conversation with you while you wait. Plenty of seats, even an added upstairs. read more

I came in to do laundry after work one day, after hearing positive things from friends. The atmosphere was clean and welcoming, with employees happily engaging with customers in an almost family like atmosphere. This seems to be a true community space. People were using it as a work space while they tended to their laundry, and it was great to be able to use the internet and get some things done on my laptop while I did my wash. In addition, a free beverage was included with the wash! The wash prices were average, and the washers and dryers were all clean and in working order. I very much enjoyed the community atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff and clientele. read more

One stop coffee and laundry -yes it exists- in West Village. At first when I heard that The Commons was a coffee shop and laundry mat I was a little taken aback, however the idea is genius. At the counter you can select from coffee and lattes, baked goods, ice cream and of course all of the laundry essentials. The prices are great and my iced chai and chocolate chip cookie were both on point. One thing that was a bit odd is that the smell of fresh laundry really overpowers the smell of coffee, but personally I found it amazing. Quick Note: -They do both laundry and coffee well here. So don't feel strange about just stopping in for a beverage, it is a great place to hang out even if you aren't doing wash as well. read more

This place is fantastic. The atmosphere is great with music playing, a nice laundry area, cool temperature, and food and drink that are delicious. The cold brew is tasty. And as part of using the laundry you get a free coffee or tea. The people that are running the place are super polite and there's community-focused aspects that make this place feel like a great option for a coffee anytime or a nice spot to do your laundry and relax with a drink and some locally-sourced foods. read more

We've heard the story as many times as we've heard our own names: business moves into a neighborhood while caring nothing about said neighborhood, treats the residents of the neighborhood poorly, rent and property taxes rise, and the residents of the neighborhood are pushed out to make way for a different, gentrification-friendly demographic. Luckily, after visiting The Commnons, I don't think this is going to be one of those stories. Understandably, I'm somewhat leery of businesses that open up in my neighborhood, as a number of them open up with no sense of the community that is housing it, disrespecting it in the process. The Commons is no such business, it appears. I really enjoyed the space when my mother and I went to introduce ourselves. The baristas were pretty laid-back and had no qualms with answering any questions that my mother had, regardless of the topic. It has a great vibe, great layout, and all the equipment is new. It also has a vast community/co-working space upstairs where they're looking to hold various events. I haven't tried many of the drinks, only the Chai latte with almond milk (which the owner makes himself), but I was pleased with the results and I'm looking forward to trying more of their tea selection (which includes matcha, green tea, black tea, iced tea--both sweetened and unsweetened-- and one more that I'm forgetting). I may try some of their coffee as well. As a member of the neighborhood, I understand that the area can be a bit sketchy at times, which I hope will improve as time passes. Nevertheless, I had an overall positive experience and be will most likely be a regular. Location issues aside, I recommend it. read more

I had been wanting to check out The Commons for about a year and finally made it! My anticipation was warranted! The barista was SO friendly and the coffee was DELICIOUS! (and also so affordable!?). It smells so fresh with the laundry going in the main room. If that smell bothers you there's a huge space upstairs. Also, while coffee shops are generally a catalyst for gentrification this shop is locally owned and cares about the neighborhood community they serve. read more

This is the best laundromat I've experienced in Detroit. Most importantly, the dryers get super hot and work quickly so you know they're killing off any bacteria or pests who tried to hitch a ride! They offer free coffee/tea with any use of the laundry machines and you can also grab a baked good or sandwich while you're there. I had the peanut butter brownie and it was . I like the concept but, there is very little room when it is busy and hard to move around without bumping into someone due to the laundry carts. The staff is polite and helpful which is bonus due to the lack of space. There is also a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere despite being bumped into. read more
