There are over 5000 names engraved on 20+ panels that wrap around the outside of this circular memorial and then inside there are several bronze life-sized sculptures of servicemembers, depicting them quite realistically. This was a touching experience waking through this memorial even though I've walked past it multiple times as it's next to the International World Peace Rose Garden, this was the first time I've really gotten to spend extended time at this memorial and to take in the gravity of the lives given and to thank our veterans for their sacrifices. Definitely worth coming to be reminded that our freedoms are not free, and also good to bring (older) kids here to learn more about the history of our country even some of the more challenging and somber chapters.

Close to 15th Street and N Street. The closes parking is street parking. I was there at 9am this morning and they still had street parking. The best time to come is on the weekends as there is much more street parking then. Just check the calendar to make sure there isn't a charity run or festival when you come. Because then it's chaotic. The Memorial is an open circular in design. In the center you will find full relief bronze sculptures. I like the one of the soldier writing or reading a letter from home. An American flag waves over the Memorial. And I believe the memorial is lit up after dark from the many lights I saw in the memorial. There are over 5,000 names of California's dead and missing are engraved on twenty-two black granite panels arranged in a circle. The names are arranged by hometowns. Los Angles has two full panels of names. Included in the memorial are granite benches that that wrap around the memorial and you can sit on them and read all the names. I don't know how accurate this is, but I read on the internet that the Memorial cost $2.5 million and was built only using donations.

I knew from having worked in government before that the building is actually offices for The state of California but what I learned while I was there is that the building was completed in the late 1990s and was designed to resemble ancient Mesopotamian steeped pyramid temples. I stopped by with my pup just to check it out and walk around but parking was much tighter than I expected. There is a parking garage but I didn't want to pay just to check out the building for 5 minutes. There was a couple picnicking on the front lawn of the building with their dog off leash and the security guard walked out immediately which made me nervous about overstaying my welcome or accidentally parking somewhere that I shouldn't. The building was very cool to see in person and looks nice. I took a cute picture of my pup in front of it and went on with my day. If you like unusual buildings or local landmarks, this is fairly easy. Quick stop if you're in the area.

There's Tree House Cafe across the street which was nice with a large outside patio and had it's own resident cat. There is a pathway alongside the river behind the building so you can make this a nice loop with the I Street Bridge.

I call this area "New Dixon." It will have houses that cost less than places in the Bay Area but brand new houses that cost more than the ones inherited by their current owners already here. Dixon is a great sleepy little town with its fair share of opinionated folks as is the case with just about everywhere else. There aren't many streetlights on one side of town and that looks to be changing with the construction of new houses. I fear (very very mildly) that there will be many many people who choose to live here and commute to places where they can make a lot more money, but I also welcome that because they'll spend a fair amount of it here. Kind of a win-win. With the current situation of staying at home and teleworking, AT&T is putting in what looks to be a fiber backbone which will hopefully make internet speeds here decent. There are a number of old timey politicians here whose policies may be past their primes. We'll see how this turns out. Its location is also fairly ideal. I can cruise to the bay for a day or I can head up to ski if that's what's on the schedule. Then I can come home, kick back and relax. Maybe watch the rest of the world's problems on the news or read about it on Yelp or the internet. Life is good. Enjoy.

The most recent event Sacramento had was Diner En Blanc. This was my first time and this is something that goes on in Sac every year for the past 10 yrs. I enjoyed going with friends and got to see what it was all about. Sacramento has the American River bike trail with I love and so many beautiful parks and who doesn't enjoy going to Downtown, Midtown and Old Town? I have no regrets moving to the area.
