John, the main shop owner and instructor, was outstanding from day one. I was nervous, not having had any dive experience whatsoever, and John spent ample time with me on the phone guiding me through everything I needed to know and how to be best prepared for my dive days. He was very clear with how much things would cost and helped me cut costs on gear where I needed to! He knows everything about gear and skills which is great, but the best of all is he is highly trained and serious about your safety whether you're in the pool or in the ocean. I knew I was in good hands considering John's 30+ years of diving experience. Plus, he is a genuine, joyful guy and he feels like your best friend right when you meet him. Rebecca was the other staff member who graciously answered my many phone calls and many questions! She's very sweet and was super clear about what our schedule would look like for training. My whole experience with Tropical Adventures, John, and Rebecca was so enjoyable and fun that I'm already getting ready to sign up for an advanced course with them! I've called at least once a day for the past 3 days and have gotten an answering machine each time. The first day I called, I left a message saying that I wanted to schedule an appointment and asked for a call back. Nothing. I don't have time to call this place 500 more times, and from the reviews it doesn't even seem to be worth it to go here. I can't speak for the classes themselves, but the customer service makes a terrible first (and second, and third) impression. Pass!

I was primarily looking to obtain my open water certification with a school who has a low student to teacher ratio. I also needed a patient instructor, as I was a bit challenged in the Discovery Scuba class I took in Maui. I drove down to Santa Cruz to buy the required mask, snorkel, fins, gloves, and booties for my upcoming certification. Both Brian and Steve suggested gear and gave me options that would meet my individual needs. I was very happy with my purchase. Brian, the instructor and owner exceeded my exceptions. He went above and beyond in so many ways! He was super patient, extremely encouraging, and made my dives very memorable!! Brian sets the class pace and learning to meet the students needs. Not only did we practice the skills needed for the certification, but we spent time on the dive just exploring and having fun! I highly recommend this place for all your scuba needs!!!

Steve is an excellent teacher/coach, and just a kind/patient human overall :) . I was deathly afraid of the mask removal underwater and Steve's calm approach helped me get over that fear. They take pride in the facility and security. The only downside is fall is in the winter time only the covered arena is open sometimes. They do seal the outside arenas. So once the outside arenas dry out they open them back up.

A Ridge too Far…read more Máyyan 'Ooyákma ("Coyote Ridge" in the native Chochenyo language) is an 1,800-sq ft Open Space Preserve located in the South San José foothills adjacent to the scenic Hwy 101 freeway. Weekend reservations are required for weekend hikes in March - May (book through Eventbrite), and a Butterfly Pass is required to visit this park. The Good: * Free to visit * Private parking lot (no street parking) * Restroom (pit toilet) in parking lot * One of the few places in the Bay that you can (allegedly) see Tule Elk in their natural habitat, and it's the closest place to home for most of us South Bayers. We visited during a Tule Elk guided hike and didn't see bupkis. According to the guide, later in the day, closer to sunset (after 5 p.m.ish), is the best time of day, as that's when the herds start looking for food. * Access here used to be limited to guided hikes only, but now it's more freely accessible except for certain times of the year (see above). * Guided hikes are still available (see website). * Approx. five miles of trails which are in reasonable shape except for the Serpentine Spring Trail (see below). The Meh: * No running water in the restroom, only hand sanitizer. * Trails have no switchbacks on the uphill and downhill. Just straight up and down for 1,000' of elevation gain. The Ugly: * Absolutely zero shade on the entire property, so definitely avoid this place during hot days and in the summer in general. * Coming downhill on the Serpentine Spring Trail was an absolute nightmare; the entire trail is full of really loose pieces of shale that in and of themselves are no bueno, but combine that with a really steep downhill decline and you have a recipe for disaster. I highly, highly suggest if you're coming here to do the 5 miles of trails, go clockwise from the parking lot: Serpentine-to-Tule Elk-to-Butterfly Trail and then back to the parking lot. Conclusion: I rarely give parks a low rating, but honestly, this place was not our cup of tea. With the lack of shade and steep, dangerously slippery trails, I just don't foresee us ever coming back.

We started on the Left-hand side which was bit steep but lots of poppies & goldfields on the purple line. Then did the blue line no flowers there, then down the green line, tidy tips, poppies. All 3 trails was only 5.8 miles. There is 1 more Fri-Sun hike scheduled if you want to check it out for Spring.

The trail has minimal shade so make sure to wear a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. There are portable toilets. If you are a hiker, there are different trails to choose from. The popular one is the steep one that leads you to the top and has a beautiful view. The hike has no shade so definitely wear sunscreen and a hat. Dogs, horses, carriers, strollers, wheelchairs, bikes are all welcome. There's a sign at the entrance that lets you know what time they are closing.

I'd only had her a few months, and I was nervous about how it would go. Ramon handled her with such patience and gentleness that after that first visit, she never needed sedation again. She trusted him, and so did I. Since then, Ramon has continued to exceed my expectations. He truly understands horses, not just how to trim and shoe them. He's incredibly calm, patient, and kind, which makes a world of difference for horses that need that extra reassurance. Recently, he worked on a rescue horse we took in who hadn't had proper hoof care in years. His feet were long, overgrown, and he had zero handling experience. Ramon took his time, never rushed, and somehow turned it into a non-traumatic experience for the horse. By the time he was done, the horse's feet looked amazing--a total transformation. I've recommended Ramon to everyone I know who's looking for a farrier. I saw another review mentioning communication issues, but that has not been my experience. Ramon has always done his best to keep us informed and shows up when he says he will. I also don't believe it's fair to give a business one star without ever experiencing their work firsthand. Once Ramon works on your horses, you'll never want another farrier. His prices are fair and very competitive--especially compared to others in the area. Expensive doesn't always mean better, and Ramon proves that time and time again. He's not just trimming and throwing shoes on--he understands hoof angles and proper biomechanics, which is so important for long-term soundness.
