The mediaeval Hall & gardens play host to a Festival of Literature in July : Ways With Words & to a month of classical music in August : The Dartington Music Fesitval. I've seen such greats as Stravinsky strolling the lanes around the Hall in August.It is a simple pleasure of mine to take a blanket & a good bottle of wine & sit with a friend outside the Hall listening to marvellous music on a summer evening. There are 3 huge car parks & 3 buses a day Station is Totnes, 3 hours from London Paddington. If you want something more commercial, or even entertainment for children,drive down to the Cider Press on the Estate (see my review elsewhere)

A whole food cafe,2 good restaurants, a crafts centre, an adventure playground,glass blowing, wood turning.multiple car parking & all manner of daily events on an ever-changing timetable. And all set in the grounds of the Dartington Hall Estate. Once owned by the Elmhursts,this whole area was filled with experimental arts,educational,& farming pursuits. The toy shop has some lovely, small stocking fillers and some larger more traditional toys. The main shop for the glass tends to be rather pricey but the smaller shops such as the bazaar have some good ideas and the sweet shack has some nice things. There is plenty of parking here, and they sometimes have bands and entertainers. There is also a coffee shop. It is a nice, different and slightly more expensive way to do your Christmas shopping off the high street.

It is in the centre of the town and housed in a most beautiful building which it shares with the lending library. It is an interesting place to take children and should be used more by the people of Plymouth.
