There was also quite a few beetles, but they're little harmless bugs. It's a gradual elevation gain, so even if you're not in the best shape (like me), it is very doable. Just have enough water. We were also treated to the old ruins, some beautiful rock formations and best of all, the waterfall was trickling! The return back to the parking lot is pretty much all downhill.

Not sure of exact address so again it is right off Loham behind Target. First off, be super careful if you have a low profile vehicle. From the Loham side you drive up a concrete driveway then on top it turns into dirt and the transition is a little rough if you are not expecting it. DRIVE slow at the top. On the Loham side you have to choice walk the bottom which seems a little easy as it is a true asphalt path. The bottom has some cottonwood trees to walk under. But that is not always safe. The bottom also leads to the Veterans Park Memorial about 1 and half in.On the top of the dam it is all gravel. You can't walk from the top to the bottom! There was no trails. There is no shade so wear sunscreen. I would recommend going at sunrise, sunset or on a breezy day. We walked to the halfway point marked by a rock pile. Halfway is 1.6 miles. Total walk for us 3.2 miles There is some pretty views of the mountains but it does get monotonous. We did see some birds with a yellow chest, a some blueish birds, and some cool spotted lizards.

Families swimming and couples kayaking in the Rio Grande! Best. Day. Ever. This park is pretty neat too. There's a small playground that seems well maintained and a trail that goes for miles following the Rio Grande. There are also fire pits placed strategically throughout this park on the river bank. And grass...grasssssssss galore! And frogs! The only reason I'm docking a store is because of the storm of mosquitoes. I grew up near water, but I've never walked into a cloud of mosquitoes. Bug spray is a necessity.

Some amazing view of the sunrise could be had here. There are a few little private nocks that you and your honey or family and have a private chat and look in awe or the farming, mountain landscape of Las Cruces. This is a rest area and a historic landmark. It has clean restrooms. It is a great area to walk around. This rest stop is easily accessed going east bound on I-10 right before Las Cruces

This small but well maintained park is perfect for families and definitely worth a stop! The ranger…read morewas amazing and went out of his way to make our visit to the park magical. We loved the exhibition hall where all all of the exhibits were hands on including a sand table where kids can make impressions from cast animal prints and the touch table where rangers had set our objects found on the trail for kids to hold and handle (today was mesquite pods, a rodent skeleton, cactus fruits, feathers, a birds nest, and shells). There were also scavenger hunt pages specific to the park to make the hikes fun for kids. The upland trail was the perfect post meal walk for our family (4 year old and 7 year old), if we'd come in the cool of the morning or evening we might have gone for both loops. Even if you're not up for a hike the garden and bird blind behind the visitors center are worth the trip. There are a beautiful variety of plants from the park with labels and rangers put out water to attract animals to the garden. In just a few minutes we saw cottontail rabbits, two kinds of lizards, a family of quail, and many many birds - some of which a friendly ranger helped us identify.

Other than the nice clean pavement trail, the park looks natural and raw with lots of schrubs around. It's great for dog walkers but there are wild animals as the sign illustrates. Once towards the center of the park, you get a beautiful view of Las Cruces on its hill.

We cannot enjoy the whole park because it is a rather long walk back to the parking lot. It would be wonderful to have a few shaded benches - but if not, one can carry an umbrella easily enough. We meet other retirees walking there but with no resting places (for people and dogs) it is prohibitive. Thankfully, the Veterans Park does have some benches scattered on their lovely trails.
