This was the fifth and final stop of the Tequila and Taco tour that Jamie W and I took in San…read moreMiguel de Allende. We ran the gamut of bars in Zona Centro, and this spot made a fitting finale since it was the most high-end spot we visited. Only a half-block from the social epicenter of Jardin Allende, it provides a nice view of the top of the parroquia from their rooftop terrace where we were seated (Photo 3). The restaurant definitely had a more refined ambiance than the previous four places. We could tell it was a popular spot among wealthy American expats because the ambient voices sounded more like Chicago than Mexico. No Spanish, just English. The cocktail was a tangy treat though, a Tamarind Margarita (Photo 8), and the Jicama Taco was a satisfying veggie ending to our evening (Photo 10). DRINK / FOOD - 4 stars...unique variations on the evening's theme AMBIANCE - 4 stars...fanciest of the bar stops SERVICE - 3.5 stars...attentive enough TOTAL - 4 stars...definitely worth a revisit for a full meal RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende? I had noticed this sandwich shop in the first few minutes I was in San Miguel de Allende because it…read morewas just down the street from our hotel. I bookmarked it mentally, but it wasn't until our last few minutes of our vacation that Jamie W and I finally tried it. We decided to pick up a couple of sandwiches to eat at the airport before our flight. Since it was a 90-minute drive to the airport, we figured the sandwiches would keep during the road trip. We were right. Fortunately, they opened just as we entered the shop at 9AM. The menu was not only in Spanish but quite robust. There was a multitude of selections, so we were on Google Translate for a while. Jamie decided on the MX$75 Torta Vegetariana, a meatless option with mushrooms, queso blanco, shredded lettuce, and avocado in a Talera bread roll (Photo 9). He was pleased with his choice and particularly impressed with the soft airiness of the toasted bread. As for me, I relied on Google AI to help me winnow down my selection to the MX$95 Torta Poblano. I understood the popularity because it contained chicken Milanesa (breaded chicken), melted queso fundido, chile poblano, lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, and cream. It was all encased in the same Talera bread roll and genuinely satisfying (Photo 7). We were lucky to find an open bench outside the terminal and devoured the tortas in no time. FOOD - 5 stars...tortas that really satisfied after a long road trip AMBIANCE - 4 stars...simple space that was obviously empty at 9AM SERVICE - 4.5 stars...really efficient, tortas were well packed TOTAL - 5 stars...could go for another one just about now RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende?
