Our first happy hour in SMA after our second at in town. What a great first impression of the city. The ambiance, the service and yes the food... we loved the jicama tacos but didn't care for the cauliflower (too sweet). Pricing was reasonable. Would definitely go back.

I had to interrupt my afternoon just to say how amazing this place is. Friendly folks work here. Service was excellent. The views are great too. I loved my guacamole and margarita "fresa.

We were only in San Miguel for half a day and decided to stop here for lunch. We ordered a bunch of food items and everything was fantastic. I'm still dreaming about the Cauliflower and Jicama taco! My girlfriend loved the crispy tuna rice as well. Our server was very nice and the vibes were immaculate. Would highly recommend!

Cocktails and appetizers at this rooftop is beautiful as the sun begins to set and night falls. The culture and spirit of San Miguel is appreciated here overlooking the city and beautiful architecture while enjoying Mexican cuisine and libations.

La Azotea is upstairs on the roof of the Pueblo Viejo. Nice views, great drinks, cool music and a diverse tapas style menu. There were 7 of us and we started with a delicious Mojito. The others had a cocktail called Guatemala served in a bowl like Miso Soup. Many of us had the jicama shrimp tacos and these are amazing. There were carne tacos and tuna tacos, a veggie pizza and more. I ordered the roasted cauliflower that was Carmelized with tahini honey, peanuts & coriander. The dish was so filling I sent it around for rave reviews. Who knew you could elevate the lowly tasteless cauliflower to such a great tasting hearty bowl. The server charged at the bar my dying cell phone. Gracias La Azotea for a wonderful evening.

Stopped by for a drink and a couple of tapas. We started with a gin and vodka tonic. Both were nice pours. We decided to order the jicama taco and the corn dip. The taco arrived first. Very good with shrimp, fried jicama, and fried onions with a sweet sauce. We split the taco and it was delicious. Next the corn dip arrived with chips. Basically a street corn in the form of a dip. Very tasty with the fresh chips. Rooftop view was nice and all the servers great. Nice touch they provided blankets on a cool December evening.

Good food! Fast service. For being restuarant food, it had good flavor. Not the best, but good.

However, the staff didn't make us feel that way since they gave us the table with inarguably the best view of the city during the most photogenic time of the day, magic hour at sunset (Photo 3). How did we get so lucky since we made our reservation just the day before? And what better way to start than with a pair of MX$340 Carajillos, the Mexican version of espresso martinis (Photo 7). The use of Licor 43 lent a welcome sweet spiciness to the deep espresso and fit the moment perfectly. We were happy to receive a complimentary serving of warm Focaccia topped with a wedge of liver pate, olive oil, and chives (Photo 10). It was a nice surprise quickly devoured. Our first shared dish was the MX$365 Ensalada Luna, a hearty and enticing mix of greens, stracciatella cheese, speck ham, fresh peaches and figs, and quinoa in a citrus and vanilla vinaigrette (Photo 4). Our entree was the MX$406 Tacos de Lechon Rostizado, a trio of roasted suckling pig tacos with crispy skin cracklings, red onion, and fresh green salsa (Photo 5). The pork was fork tender. Nestled in a flour tortilla, the soft pulled meat stood in nice contrast to the crack of the skin. We went for a second drink, but this time a mocktail, the MX$195 Chilate, a refreshing alcohol-free blend of cacao, rice, cinnamon, and raw cane sugar in a coconut shell (Photo 6). While awaiting our dessert order, we were surprised by a complimentary Happy Anniversary dessert, a bit of a head-scratcher. We didn't say we were celebrating anything, but hey, we didn't complain. The sparkler was already lit and the staff was harmonizing. It was a chocolate ganache cake with blueberries atop puffed rice (Photo 8). That didn't stop us from enjoying the crispy-sweet MX$289 Churros with cinnamon ice cream and champurrado chocolate sauce (Photo 9), while entranced by the nighttime view (Photo 2). TOURISTS BEWARE: WE WERE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. Wanted to share…read moremy family's experience when we were here on October 1, 2025. For context, we were a huge group (~20) with reservations that were set up by our hotel, and we were broken up into 3 different tables. Our reservation was done roughly 24 hours in advance, so I don't fault them for this in any way. Another neutral thing is that there is only 1 check per table. Not anything bad, but for large groups, please take note. Speaking solely on behalf of the table that I was seated at, these were the negatives of our experience: - We were charged for bottled water without being made aware that the charge applied; additionally, we were charged for more bottles than were on our table. - We were told a price on a cocktail, but it appeared differently (more expensive) on our bill. - We ordered cocktails with both higher-end and house liquor, but we were charged the higher-end price for all of them. - We were charged for an extra cocktail. - There was a hair embedded in one of the plate's guacamole--clearly mixed in--and when we respectfully raised the concern to our waiter, the manager came out and condescendingly explained it was "due to wind." I wanted to go through the bill on my own, but (1) the person taking the payment waited next to me with the card reader, and (2) our large group had to get going. I understand my mistake in not going through the bill before I paid, but that many errors on our bill just feels deliberate to prey on tourists, especially considering we tipped on this inflated amount for a meal that was already pricey to begin with. There are some positives to our experience: the views were beautiful, they offered blankets and heaters to combat the cold wind, and I'm grateful that the staff spoke English (most of the folks in our group at the other tables were older and wouldn't be able to use a translation app) and answered our many questions; however, I will never return to this restaurant again because of the way we were clearly taken advantage of. For any tourists, please learn from my mistake and be sure to go through your bill with a VERY fine comb.

There is a smoked cocktail on the menu where they use wood chips to provide smoke into the cocktail which would be cool except they use a butane hand torch to ignite the wood chips. When our waiter came to our table with this contraption I said in Spanish that using a butane hand torch for that is dangerous. He laughed- then proceeded to ignite the torch and send fully ignited wood chips all over my wife. The wood chips burned through her favorite dress all the way to her skin (see the attached pic and imagine how having a burning wood chip would feel against your skin). The waiter then apologized but then acted as if nothing happened. I'm a professional chef and you use butane hand torches to sear or caramelize products that won't fly away- like a steak or a creme brule. The reason is because the force of the butane flame is enough to send smaller things like wood chips flying. This is why when you go to legitimate and safe speakeasies, they use a smoke gun which heats up the chips without sending them flying. To add insult to injury when we asked for the check the waiter came back with the full bill and asked for a 15% tip. This is after severely burning my wife and destroying her favorite dress. So if you want the adventure of having your dress ruined and extra trip to the farmacia for burn cream, Bekeb is the place to go.

Stroll into the Casa del Rector hotel and the concierge will radio up to check if there is room at the bar for you. Then walk through the hotel and take the elevator all the way up. We enjoyed our drinks and the lovely view. They have some semi-see-through sun screens/shields that cover half the bar for patrons who do not want the sun in their eyes; the staff raise these screens just before sunset. We enjoyed three drinks and an appetizer before leaving for dinner proper. The waitstaff were good. I actually want to give 4.5 stars because the calamari we had was laughably bad and the salad it came with was much better. Nonetheless the beautiful setting was one of the highlights of our trip so I will rank it as 5 - just don't get the calamari!!

The cocktail menu is not large, but the drinks are inventive and much more balanced (less syrupy sweet, nor shy on the liquor) compared to other places. Prices are a bit higher than most at 180 pesos per drink, but still very reasonable compared to US prices. The bartenders were so very attentive and made sure to get our second drink order as soon as the first was done. The only thing that was a little strange was that their menu QR code took us to their Instagram page. Me being a total dinosaur did not have an IG account and couldn't see the menu, but luckily hubby did. There is a host's stand at the Hotel Casa del Rector entrance to make sure that there is seating to accommodate your party before allowing you to go up. Our hostess did not tell us how to actually get to the rooftop, so we just walked up a couple flights and found ourselves in a completely empty but very pretty courtyard. We found more stairs up across the courtyard, even though it looked like it led to hotel guest rooms and private balconies, then eventually ended up at the top where the pool and bar were. Totally took my breath away at the complete transformation from the busy cobblestone street to panoramic views of the city. Only then did I see the glass elevator that would've taken us easily up here. However, the free self-guided tour of the hotel convinced me the next time I'm in Guanajuato, this is the place to stay in!
