This was the fifth and final stop of the Tequila and Taco tour that Jamie W and I took in San Miguel de Allende. We ran the gamut of bars in Zona Centro, and this spot made a fitting finale since it was the most high-end spot we visited. Only a half-block from the social epicenter of Jardin Allende, it provides a nice view of the top of the parroquia from their rooftop terrace where we were seated (Photo 3). The restaurant definitely had a more refined ambiance than the previous four places. We could tell it was a popular spot among wealthy American expats because the ambient voices sounded more like Chicago than Mexico. No Spanish, just English. The cocktail was a tangy treat though, a Tamarind Margarita (Photo 8), and the Jicama Taco was a satisfying veggie ending to our evening (Photo 10). Had a delicious dinner here. Variety of options and everyone loved what they had. My son and I shared the skirt steak tacos and ribeye. They had friendly service, and a traditional and elegant ambiance. We were able to get a party of 8 in same day, which was very nice. Lots of good options in SMA, this is one. Recommend. read more

Beautiful rooftop with light appetizers and drinks! Spent a couple hours enjoying the view and some appetizers. Ordered the steak sandwich, shrimp tempura, guacamole and Margherita cheese pizza. All delicious options. We did try the pear pizza with four cheese but found the blue cheese overpowering so would not order that again. Our servers were brothers and stayed right on top of refills and drink orders. Highly recommend if you are in the area! read more

We found a couple who preferred non smoking so we sat back to back tables to ensure we don't have to have smoke in our face, so we got lucky. Other than that, it's fantastic and really cool Upstairs. La Azotea is upstairs on the roof of the Pueblo Viejo. Nice views, great drinks, cool music and a diverse tapas style menu. There were 7 of us and we started with a delicious Mojito. The others had a cocktail called Guatemala served in a bowl like Miso Soup. Many of us had the jicama shrimp tacos and these are amazing. There were carne tacos and tuna tacos, a veggie pizza and more. I ordered the roasted cauliflower that was Carmelized with tahini honey, peanuts & coriander. The dish was so filling I sent it around for rave reviews. Who knew you could elevate the lowly tasteless cauliflower to such a great tasting hearty bowl. Stopped by for a drink and a couple of tapas. We started with a gin and vodka tonic. Both were nice pours. We decided to order the jicama taco and the corn dip. The taco arrived first. Very good with shrimp, fried jicama, and fried onions with a sweet sauce. We split the taco and it was delicious. Next the corn dip arrived with chips. Basically a street corn in the form of a dip. I'd give this a six. What a great atmosphere, the music just the right volume, friendly service, a lovely interior and great food. I would not call these plates tapas- they were pretty big and there is no way I could have finished more than my yummy pear salad and my enchiladas. Arrived around 6:00 pm Monday evening, excited to enjoy rooftop drinks and a highly recommended meal while experiencing sunset from our table.....what we got were decent drinks, a truncated menu with bar food (that the waiter indicated was the only menu) that tasted very pedestrian and a shortened evening. We had heard that the jicama tacos and the pizza were excellent, so we ordered them along with our drinks and a couple of other dishes. As previously mentioned, the drinks were decent. The margaritas was very tasty. The jicama tacos were unique and as a prelude to an outstanding dinner would have been great. Unfortunately, the pizza was tasteless, and as we had few other food choices, we asked for the bill and prepared to leave. It was at that time, we saw the waiter had provide a much larger menu to other patrons and realized that we were not afforded the same experience that other diners were given. We felt disrespected and disappointed that this restaurant did not value our patronage. We will not be coming back to this restaurant again. read more

Best food we had in SMA. We had a group of six, so we tried a large variety of Tapas, and every dish was unique and wonderful. The portions, which can be pretty small in some tapas restaurants, were large and the flavors were just wonderful. read more

The beef in the tacos was rancid. The guacamole was fresh but the chips were stale .... not crispy, but tough and difficult to chew like they had been left out for many days. Stopped in here to La Azotea for the roof view but unfortunately the flowers (which were beautiful) blocked the view. If you stood up and stretched you could see but it was a little disappointing not being able to look at the view from the high top table we seated at. We had some cocktails and the Jicama Shrimp Taco. Oh my it was so good we had to order some more. The staff, of which there were many were very attentive without being pushy. The place was pretty busy and the vibe was good. No loud pounding music so it was easy to have conversation. It is definitely hip and trendy here and I'm sure a great spot during high season on the weekends. The four stars are because of the poor view but that will change as the flowers will !! read more

Sit on the top patio and enjoy jicama shrimp tacos. Jicama tacos are MADE with a sliver of jicama instead of a tortilla. The combination of fried shrimp and crispy onions with a delightful sauce is to die for! We had one order of the coconut shrimp tacos too, and they were OK, but a bit sweet, so all of our reorders were for the jicama tacos. The setting on the rooftop patio is fresh and comfortable. Food and drinks were very good but my main gripe is with the access to this place. We called on a Friday for a reservation and were told we could come in without one. An hour later we came in and were told the the rooftop was full and there was an event. Were told to come in Sunday or Monday. We said ok no big deal. We call Sunday for a reservation and were told again that there was a lot of space and a reservation was not needed. I made sure to specify and double check that we wanted to dine at the rooftop not Pueblo Viejo. We came in a little later and were told again there was an event and it was full. I was confused! I told them about what they had told us on Friday to come in Sunday and then the girl up front made a call and then they smiled and took us up yo the rooftop. We would have left if not for a meeting that we had set up that evening with friend of ours. But the experience was ruined and it left us flabbergasted as to why they treated us that way. Maybe we weren't dressed to the nines or maybe they didn't think we were going to order much and that was their policy of letting people in. It left us disappointed. I visited La azotea on 2 separate occasions during my visit to SMA. While there I tried the guacamole and (drum roll please) the jicama shrimp tacos... best and only tacos I've ever had. Naturally, I ordered them a second time on the next visit. Unfortunately, I did not try any of their cocktails but I did have the pleasure of experiencing the great and attentive staff and enjoying the view. I will definitely come back. read more
