The experience was alright. I guess people wanted to get on the list for the rooftop view. Nevertheless, you see the view anywhere you will be within the city. The drinks/cocktails - nothing to be raves about. You can better/stronger cocktails someplace else for a cheaper price. The food - we found a hair strand in one of the bacon wrapped chicken. We told the waiter about it and told him to not replace. Another girls came back with another order - we declined. BEST taco EVER! Their Jicama shrimp taco is a culinary masterpiece, the melding of flavors is extraordinary. Topped with crispy thin fried leeks, chipotle mayo, red sauce with breaded and deep fried shrimp. The "tortilla" is a thin slice of Jicama. They also make a damn fine margarita and plonk down a bottle of the most addictive Spanish peanuts, warning, you will want to wolf the entire bottle, but leave room for their Jicama Tacos! It's hard to find this place, the signage isn't the best outside, it is inside another restaurant and upstairs with great views of the pink church spires. Been here several times. The guys upstairs are always friendly and willing to help out. The first time there was to celebrate our new home in SMA and when they found out the brought out a big slice of cake with a firework on top. Was great. Our last trip now the guys are getting to know us when we asked about a certain alcohol one of the waiters brought over three shots on the house for us to try. Very nice. Great place even for "locals". Guacamole is made fresh to order and we love the "rock shrimp". A bit spicy but good, don't miss the fried green beans underneath them!! A friend and I watched the sunset here. We had giant mango margaritas and the famous jicama shrimp tacos. The tacos were amazing and we got a second order. The service was very good - perhaps too good because somehow we suddenly had 3 waiters attending to us and our orders got lost in translation, and the check came early (this was clearly a mistake and we never felt like we were being pressured to leave); everyone laughed it over. We came on a Thursday; did not need a reservation. There were a lot of big groups in large lounge areas as well as smaller groups at the tables. Felt sorry for the staff because, despite their obviously-strict Covid protocols and the staff's over-the-top efforts to make folks feel safe, there was a table of entitled, gross mask-deniers on the rooftop. How awkward and miserable it must be for a business to have to defend their safety measures to visitors this selfish and gross. And yet, they did. I messed up on my Tamarind margarita order and forgot to say, "en rocas" so it came frozen. I was bummed and that freaked the staff out. They kept checking to make sure I was happy with it. I downed it, got a brain freeze and then ordered correctly. We had the elote appetizer and several cocktails. Great place to pop into when you're hot and need a break from cruising the town. My wife and I stopped at La Azotea twice on a short trip to San Miguel. We liked this place that much. La Azotea is a swanky two-level place around the corner from the church and town center. The patio gives a decent view of the city, and a great view of the processions of newly-married couples that came by every thirty minutes (we were there on a Saturday night). We had margaritas on both visits, they were tasty and reasonably priced. The food was delicious - my wife ordered an egg dish that looked and tasted amazing (see my photo), and my chiles en nogata dish was the best while visiting Guanajuato. It's very rare that I've had such a dense, rich dish that I've eaten so quickly. The beef was well-seasoned, the walnut sauce was light without being sweet. Awesome dish. Service was super-helpful. The server spoke English, and they had English-friendly menus. Definitely stop by! read more

We've been in SMA for 10 days and come here three times. La Azoteca is just the best -- beautiful rooftop setting, great, innovative, very tasty selection of tapas, great bartenders pouring great drinks. And an outstanding value. As a result, sometimes it gets absolutely crazy busy and you will need to wait to be served. Other times, everything is seamless and fast and superb. This place was incredible the first time we were in town! The drinks are outstanding! However my low rating is for their rating in poor hospitality. My partner and I have both worked in hospitality in SF, CA predominantly in fine dining so we know what to look for! When I went in with just me and my (white/American) boyfriend they were extra welcoming and accommodating however the next day when I tried to take (my very well off Mexican/American) parents they refused to seat us. Yet less than 5 minutes later they allowed a group of white girls in (reservations are not allowed here btw) It's so disappointing that such a nice place discriminates against Mexican looking guests just because they can. I went up to ask the hostess and they just referenced that "it is what it is". First of all, I understand appearances matter, but please be upfront and not make us feel any less because we can definitely afford your place! read more

I don't like to write bad reviews but this warrants a warning to future guest. This place is truly racist! Now in days when we strive to be better and not look at color or age we don't expect these situations to arise. But yesterday a group of friends wanted to go out and celébrate in a local establishment in our town that we live in and were rudely told that one of our friends could not enter because they were not the "right" shade of skin. But the other group of friends that were a lighter shade were welcomed in and even offered a table right away. Even trying to talk to the employees including the hostess was a struggle for they didn't want to give us a good reason for denying our friends entry other than they don't serve people of that skin color. Seeing as how this is a tourist town, I wouldn't want anyone else to visit this place and get the same hand dealt to ruin our beautiful towns experience. It only takes one bad apple to ruin it and luckily not all places in San Miguel de Allende are like this. Don't waste your time going here, just walk away and visit many of the other establishments around the corner that will show you that wonderful Mexican hospitality. read more

This is a wonderful Rooftop Bar and restaurant right near the Centro of San Miguel. You do have to walk up a few staircases but the view is worth it especially for sunset. We have always had very good food here and very good service which is not true of every place in town. Their menu is mainly small bites and Tapas great to share they have a good wine list and plenty of beers and a full bar highly recommended read more

La Azotea is a wonderful place to come and take a load off after a long day of shopping and sauntering on cobblestone streets. It's on the 3rd floor of a building that houses another restaurant, so just take the stairs to the top. Here you will find many expats and traveling retirees. It seemed to be an older crowd, and that was perfect for us! We were immediately greeted by smiling faces and were welcomed to enjoy a corner table with a great view. Menus are on slate chalkboards and prices are very fair. My mom and I ordered the Tacos Poblanos and a round of lime margaritas. Both were VERY good. THe tacos were pretty big, so you might want to share an order with someone. Everyone that we encountered was lovely...super friendly and helpful. We ordered another round of margs and enjoyed the complmentary chili peanuts they have at every table - so good! For dessert she had the cajeta crepes and I had the corn cake - both were fantastic! The corn delish....if you still have room for it, I recommend it! Our time here was leisurely and we felt more than welcome to relax and enjoy. The sunset was lovely, though the view not as dramatic as el Mirador or Luna at the Rosewood, but it was still a great way to end the day over some cocktails and good food. Salud! read more

You will fall in love, not only with the stunning view but the tasty food - don't forget to try the Jicama Tacos - generous cocktails (two for one happy hour Mon-Thurs, 5-9 pm) - and the darling, friendly bartenders. For one of the very best views of San Miguel's ornamental steeples, creative food and cocktails, and a swank interior, a visit to Azotea is a must! The name Azotea doesn't appear on the outside of the building, but I can assure you that it is indeed at Umaran 6. Just go in and take a right before the host station to the ground level restaurant. There is a cocktail area separate from the wrap around windowed restaurant. You can order the excellent appetizers there. The jicama tacos (tostadas?) are killer!!! Thin slices of jicama are substituted for the tortilla base. Breaded pork and super crispy bits of green onion have two sauces--sour cream and bbq--drizzled over them. I went twice and each time, once with three people and once with four, and each time we ALL ordered at least one of these delectable treats. I have to give props to Jan from Texas whom we met there the first time. She comes there so often, she claims she has a seat with her name on it. ;-) She was the one that reco'd the jicama tacos. Also amazing were the ham croquettes, crispy on the outside, gooey and delicious on the inside! And the salmon tacos.
