Rooftop seating is not for the faint of heart and although the breeze is nice, there is no real view. The green mimosa was very refreshing, could barely taste or feel the champs in it. The yogurt bowl was great! The enfrijoladas were yummy as well. The service was just fine. Being in SMA I think I get spoiled by the excellent service and when people are on their phones instead of coming back to close out or seem to get annoyed that your indecisive about your drink order it's not typical of the SMA experience. This was our first time visiting San Miguel de Allende, and after a long flight, we were ready to eat. I checked Yelp for nearby spots, and Inside Café came up--it was within walking distance of our hotel, so we decided to give it a try. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted and told to sit wherever we liked. We chose a table at the top of the restaurant, which offered a lovely view of the town. We eventually moved to the lower level because it was a little chilly with a breeze. To start, we ordered the spring roll and pork belly, along with a Jamaica, a margarita, and an old fashioned. The spring roll was decent, but the pork belly really stood out--it was incredible! Margarita and old fashion were on point too! For our mains, we tried the curry plate, a noodle dish, and a sandwich. All were solid, but the curry plate was definitely the highlight. To end the meal, we shared an espresso martini--and it did not disappoint. We're already planning to come back for breakfast. We came here for dinner on our second day in SMA since they have some vegan options. We ordered the vegan Vietnamese Fresh Rolls (3), Shiitake Miso Ramen, and the Sambal Kacang Cauliflowwer plate, Sunset Sour, and Jamaica lemonade. The fresh rolls had a bit a of a kick, like maybe they contained ginger (in the Vietnamese sauce it came with), which I personally did not care for, but my husband did like them. I thought the Sambal plate was delicious, considering curry can be hit or miss with me, but this one definitely was to my liking; I'm not the biggest curry person, unless it has some coconut milk in it; but I think the creaminess came from the peanut sauce, which was good; the plate also came with white rice. My husband primarily ate the Ramen and reported that it was good. We ate on their small rooftop area, which was quaint and cute. The service was quick, attentive, and helpful. El Chicken Grilled Cheese Sandwich: Mesquite smoked pulled pork with homemade BBQ sauce & a mix of cheeses. Before I say anything else, let me be clear: this review is not about Inside Café, the charming breakfast spot I visited earlier this week. My 'El Big Wild dish' was solid, the vibe was cozy, and the service was warm. Five stars for breakfast!!! This review is about Xam Xam--the evening pop-up concept operating out of the same space. I found out about it from the business card the staff handed me as I was leaving brunch on Sunday. The concept sounded promising: bold flavors, clearly marked gluten-free options, and an enticing Taco Tuesday promo. But for a pop-up that wants to punch above its weight, Xam Xam still feels like it's in rehearsal. Things started fine. I ordered a cocktail and two gluten-free starters. The drink arrived, the food came--but instead of the cucumber dish I requested, I got the broccoli appetizer. Not a disaster, and the broccoli was actually really good. But I was hoping to get what I ordered. The restaurant got busy fast, and suddenly I was invisible. Eventually, a new server floated over. I explained the mix-up, complimented the broccoli, and placed another order: an entrée and a second cocktail. I politely asked if she could still bring me the cucumber dish I originally wanted. She returned with a micro-sample--just a few lonely slivers on a plate. It felt less like an apology and more like a shrug in vegetable form. Then: radio silence. Over 30 minutes passed. No drink. No entrée. No one checked in. When the same server came back, she looked confused, like we were starting from scratch. Eventually, the food and drink arrived, about 45 minutes after I ordered them. But by then, my appetite had left the building. I asked to box up my food and shared that the long delays had soured the experience. The original server came back just in time to hear me out--in Spanish, no less. I tried to explain how disappointing it was to be overlooked as a solo diner while tables around me had noticeably smoother service. Her response? A half-hearted "I'll look into it." No empathy. No real acknowledgment. Just two smashed-together to-go containers and a forgettable goodbye. Xam Xam could be something special. The quality and variety of food and cocktails are amazing...but tonight, it fell short in terms of customer service. Do Better! read more

Lovely spot for brunch! We came here for late lunch around 2pm and the cafe was pretty empty by then. For food we got the birria grilled cheese special along with the sexy Mexican breakfast. The birria grilled cheese was rich and super comfortably, especially dipped into the consume they serve on the side. It's definitely on the heavier side but a nice treat. The Mexican breakfast was a nice light brunch dish with 2 sausage links on top of beans, avocado, salsa and herbs. We also got the hibiscus lemonade to try which was good as well. The flavor was a bit syrupy but nice when mixed a few times. Overall the ambiance on the rooftop and food makes this a solid choice for a casual lunch. We enjoyed it here. read more

Happened upon this spot after going to the market which is close by. We were directed to the top of restaurant with views. The waiter was very helpful in explaining the various dishes and efficient. I had the Eggy Bagel which had a couple of eggs, grilled cherry tomatoes and greens with dressing and seeds. Really good and reasonable. Amazing breakfast spot in San Miguel de Allende. We came here both mornings just to try different things, including - and I am not ashamed - an Espresso Martini at 930am. Delicious! Food was amazing - the first day i had the Sexy Mexican Breakfast which was similar to Huevos Rancheros - very yummy, though I wouldn't call it sexy per se. The next day I had their famous pulled pork and cheese sandwich (more of a brunch item) which was finger licking good. I could have ordered another one had I not been expecting to have lunch a few hours later. When you come, be sure to go all the way to the rooftop for the best seats. There is open air seating on the second floor as well, but rooftop is where its at. Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting San Miguel. read more

The environment at Inside Cafe is lovely. They have a small rooftop area for open-air dining, as well as two small floors of indoor tables. However, we came here hoping for some light Asian cuisine -- these noodles were some of the saltiest dishes we've ever tasted and we ended up pouring a lot of our water into the broth to dilute it. After specifically asking for less oil, we were dismayed to be greeted by bowls absolutely glistening with grease. The wonton soup we ordered was not authentic either, with the 'wontons' feeling more like ravioli. We came in the late afternoon when there were only a few other tables and it still took a long time for our dishes to be served. My teen son and l came here for breakfast. We both had the tasty beef birria and cheese toasted sandwiches with a salad on the side and a small cup of spicy beef broth. We also had 2 large cups of delicious Mexican hot chocolate and 1 cup of the soothing golden milk. Our server, Carlos, was helpful and friendly. I heard that there is also roof top dining with a spectacular view. However, l was unwilling to climb 4 to 5 flights of very narrow stairs to get to the roof top. We arrived today at 11am, a party of two, and was told it'd be a 15-20 minute wait. We found two spots to stand in an already crowded waiting area. We saw many other parties (larger, I suppose they had to be seated as a group & had different needs). We waited calmly until it reached an hour and then were led to a table in front of the kitchen where it was blazing hot and a fan was roaring in front of us. We saw dish after dish being plated and could hear every clang of cookware and inhale the fume of everything that came out. We were eventually led to a table on the balcony, about to take our seat when the MANAGER (who was very much aware of our situation from the minute we entered the restaurant) swooped in to move a party of three seated behind so they could have the obviously more choice table. I could not believe it. This party was halfway through their meal and then occupied the said table for about 10 minutes and then left. We were then asked if we wanted to move. We already had our initial orders and were in no mood to be moved yet again. Lesson: come at dawn if you want a table and don't want to be shuffled around. I noticed quite a few unhappy looking customers glumly poking at their food so we weren't the only ones. Food and drinks were decent. Views were dismal. If you've been elsewhere outside SMA, this place isn't worth it. Don't be a lemming. read more

i Wanted to say that this was a good experience as the food had potential and seemed to be aware of dietary options; however I'm going there twice, they messed up my order. The first time I confirmed that no cheese or dairy of any sort and my order came with cheese. Thankfully the waiter was very helpful and redid my order and Took accountability for the mistake as she didn't realize cheese was dairy. The second time I went, I ordered a spicy miso ramen vegan and gf. They confirmed they could make it gf with rice noodles; when I received the order (to go) I got home and it had meat and meat broth. We called requesting a change and the gentleman who took our order refused to take accountability for their mistake and wouldn't refund or redo the order. Clearly staff need to be more well educated on dietary restrictions and be more customer centered. Absolutely wouldn't recommend if you have any dietary concerns. BEWARE! It was our last stop while in San Miguel, we grabbed brunch and were heading back to CDMX. I entered the custom tip when paying and the waiter went to another waiter to complain I didn't tip enough. They refused to let us go and started schooling us that "minimum 15-20% tip is required in Mexico". Of course no disclaimer was provided before we started the brunch and nothing on the menu about "required tips" whatsoever. We decided to give those tips as we were in a hurry and wants to get it over with, and since we didn't have smaller banknotes, we asked if they had a change to give us. The waiter took it and then said he doesn't have a change and we would have to wait for a while. This just broke the entire experience of that place which looked so promising in the beginning. Location is great. Food is pretty good. And the rooftop vibe and atmosphere is nice as well. Service is just like another service everywhere else, but with one big twist. read more

First off, the paintings and decorations here were so beautiful which continued into their plating presentation. Best margaritas we've had in San Miguel so far- passion fruit was my favorite from the taste to the dried grapefruit and flower garnish. The dumplings tasted spectacular. Vietnamese rolls were refreshing but i would've loved to see them paired with a traditional peanut sauce rather than the fish sauce. All three entrees were divine! The pho broth Tasted amazing with the beef but was a little salty- would still order again. The butter chicken curry with vegetables was amazing made and had the best flavoring!
