We stayed at the Mansion House Hotel last night (July27th, 2019). The Mansion itself is gorgeous…read more It looks like a small castle. I wouldn't recommend staying the night but I would recommend a reservation for dinner here just to have the experience. The negative: I felt like the price wasn't worth the stay. The pool was not open. The salon and spa were not operating during our stay either. These were some things I was looking forward to. I made the mistake of assuming and not asking because they are featured amenities when booking the hotel. There were also a few little things amiss. For example: trash behind the bed, the handle bar for the shower bar was missing a gasket and kept falling, the trash can in the bathroom was broken, the room was really hot (they did have a fan). Just a lot of small things that add up. The positive: The breakfast, dessert, and drinks we had here were delicious! The bar is pretty well stocked. I have a dairy allergy and my waiter and the cook took care to make sure there were no cross contamination's. The area around the mansion is gorgeous. This is a great place to take some fun pictures! Overall we did enjoy our stay. The staff was lovely. They do all leave for the night which is something to note. The place just needs more love and care.
We only stayed one night, but really enjoyed our stay here…read more The grounds and exterior are really beautiful. Our room was charming, the bed incredibly comfortable, and the bathroom was one of the nicest we had during our whole 3 week trip to the UK. Breakfast was delicious as well! The interior of the mansion is beautiful, but clearly is in need of some care. For example, we noticed an incredibly large rip in the felt on the pool table, there were a few spots where we noticed wear and tear on the walls, and our bedspread had a few spots where either someone burned it or it just wore through. We chose not to have dinner at the mansion because even though the menu at the restaurant looked amazing, it was VERY expensive. I'm very happy we chose to stay at the Mansion, and hope to visit again - it just needs a tiny facelift to be perfect!

Alas Yelp was of little use (I've found that outside the US Yelp is a poor representation of dining options). I tried the Sunninghill for diner at the suggestion of a local shopkeeper. The Maître d' told us they were booked until 9pm (a good omen) but she would try to fit us in. While waiting we sampled their extensive selection of fine scotch. The bar staff was friendly and helpful. Once seated, the restaurant service was warm, and food was served promptly. All was good to excellent: well prepared and presented, although the meats tended to be over cooked. Desert was well worth the gluttony.

This establishment has managed to scrape 1 star, only because it's not possible to give it 0. We're not the sort of customers who suffer in silence when there's problems with the food/service, but we're also not mouthy. Since we were staying at the Premier Inn next door, we made the unfortunate mistake of attempting to eat at this establishment a number of times. My attempt is when I arrived after travelling from the Borders up to Elgin, and it was getting late at night. They refused to serve me (despite the fact I arrived 15 minutes before last food orders). While annoying, I didn't think much of it because the place was quiet, and I've worked Kitchen in other establishments. I had to grab some food from the McDonald's next door. The next day we had to send food back 3 times because they kept getting the orders wrong. The food that they did get right had to be sent back because it was cold. We tried early breakfast the next morning before our (various) trains home. Thankfully the food was warm this time, a pity it was burned or just completely foul. After complaining in a exasperated "can't believe it kind of way", someone claiming to be the manager came out and tried to defend the food - but soon beat a hasty retreat with the overwhelming evidence. Wasn't offered any discounts, sincere apologies (other than the serving staff saying that they'd send it back to the kitchen and try again). I'm not unreasonable. Mistakes happen when places are busy for a million different reasons, but the customer service has to step up to compensate. I'd still give a 5 star review if things were handled well. Coincidentally, it doesn't bother us, but feel it's worth mentioning the food didn't arrive together. Know that's important for others. Honestly? Do yourself a favour and visit the McDonald's across the road.

The last year or so, it's getting impossible to get a table on a Friday around 5pm as all the tables are booked solid. There is no consideration given to people who just drop in. Tonight we were there and the same old story....there was 10 people turned away in the space of 10 minutes. The Travel Lodge next door was increased in size over one year ago so the restaurant gets all their business but have severely neglected the loyal customers who drop in for a meal without booking. It's come to the point that it's not worth the hassle any more so won't be using this restaurant in the future. Just head into town a few minutes away and go to the Wetherspoons where you don't have to book and the meals are adequate and reasonably priced.

Every place was booked or did not take credit cards, so I ended up paying £65 for a room in this crummy hotel. Speaking of 65, that was probably the last year that the carpets were cleaned in here. My room was tiny, even by European standards, and oddly shaped, perhaps stuck on as sort of an afterthought at the end of the hallway when they were designing the hotel. Oh well. I only intended to sleep and shower there, doing my usual routine of check in, go eat dinner, hit a few pubs, stumble home at night, drag myself out of bed in the morning, and hit the road. Thankfully it was not a cold night, as the narrow single bed had merely a sheet and a thin blanket with which to keep me warm. Breakfast was included, but I can't tell you a thing about it, so it must not have been particularly memorable.

It concerns me, however, that it took about 20 minutes to find my room amid the illogical and confusingly signposted network of corridors. Eschewing normal convention, all rooms on all floors appeared to be numbered 3-something. Equally perplexingly, the hotel's whisky bar which boasts a massive selection of single malts is something which they're clearly promoting as a feature of the venue. Yet it took us a good 20 minutes to find an interesting dram from a bottle that hadn't been open for who knows how long and become flat and oxidised. Picky review? Maybe. But it goes to show how you can take something potentially wonderful and immediately dial it back a couple of notches just by taking your eye off the ball.

The resturant downstairs had a large selection of meals available. I recommend the steak. The portions are excellent and are served by pleasant and attentive staff. I was pleased to see a good selection of local whiskeys, very pleased (haha), which were served in 35ml nips. There was also a large selection of other drinks, for those who don't drink whiskey, like lager, cider and ales. The bar staff were friendly and talkative, as were the locals. I highly recommend staying here.
