#15 for 2019 It's a…read moresmaller version of what we have stateside. Limited selection of pastries and fewer drinks. No salted caramel either. Maybe they don't have a sweet tooth down under as much as we do. You come in and there will be people perusing the counters, tray and tong in hand, making important decisions what to get. There is a cold fridge for their more delicate, frosted treats. I happen to walk in close to their closing time. They were announcing everything was 50% off everything with a few exceptions. With the US$ having about a 30% stronger buying power, I filled up a couple bags to bring home. Didn't have to worry about breakfast this time. Service, like most of Australia, is not something you want to talk about. The good thing is they do not tip down here. It's a good trade off as I'd rather save money.

This little cake shop definitely has location working in its favor. It was a Tuesday evening, I had…read morejust eaten dinner with a small group of friends to honor a birthday and was dismayed that we hadn't done the candle lighting, song singing, festivities that birthdays require. As we were walking up George St, I forced everyone inside of 85 in order to source the necessities to make the magic happen. I picked out a slice of the blueberry cheesecake and some mousey death-by-chocolate extravaganza and we continued down to Town Hall to sit on the wall (like classy girls do), eat cake and people watch. I was disappointed that the shop didn't have birthday candles, but we sang anyway. The cakes were, eh, decent. I wouldn't have been surprised to learn that the cheesecake was made out of shop and frozen. The chocolate mouse was fluffy but had some sort of strange plastic aftertaste. I would definitely NOT recommend this place for the quality of their desserts, but if you happen to be in the area and in a cake-related pinch, it will do. They are open super late on weekend nights as well, so that alone is a sizable pro.

We've been back a few times since my original review and while the menu has changed (no more black…read moresausage), this is still a cute little place in Newtown worth a visit.

One of my first food stops in Sydney…read more Having tried cronuts and cruffins in the East and West Coast of America. I wanted to see what the Aussies could cook up in the Golden Coast. I was pretty impressed with the 16 different flavors of cronuts/cruffins they bake each day. However after trying 4 different flavors (Red Velvet, Boston cream, Orange spice & custard and Chocolate Lavender) I wasn't impressed anymore. Mr. Holmes and Dominique Ansel preserves the meaning of quality over quantity. This is not reflected at Brewtown Newtown. Nearly all their pastries lacked a heavy dose of cream. The cronuts did not even have real layers of croissant in between. The cruffins weren't flaky enough. Sure it was covered in sugar but it was missing that sweet spot (literally). The taste wasn't quite there yet. I also got to try something I've never seen before and to be honest I'm a bit embarassed I ate something so sinfully disgusting. The Elvis burger. I have no idea why it's called that and I don't think this is in anyway a rock star burger. It's basically a burger with plain cronuts as the buns. The moment I took a bite I could feel the heart attack I'm getting when I turn 85. I tasted every drop of oil that was soaked the cronuts and the beef patty from the fryer. Elvis Burger, you won the award for the most disgusting thing I ate in 2015. Do I regret it? A little. Was it good? Kinda. Would I do it again? Probably not, I clogged enough arteries already. P.S. They also have a ridiculously long wait for brunch, I ended up getting take away. This place is kind of overhyped, given it's predictable location (the hipster neighborhood of Sydney.)

DO NOT EAT HERE!…read more This place is absolutely dreadful. It's a shanty nook next to a barber shop and directly in front of one of the busiest bus stops on George Street. If I were in Vietnam, this place would seem like the Ritz Carlton, but we're in Sydney and there are food standards. Yes, the sandwiches are cheap, but you get what you pay for. It's unappetizing when you see where restaurants store their food. Although this is a tiny place, there's no excuse for keeping veggies and other bags of food on the floor... Especially when I've walked pass this place and seen what they do when they close. They wet the floor and perhaps "clean" it... Well what happens to the food stored on the ground? No answer. The sandwiches are prepared by workers wearing the same latex gloves they used to collect money from the previous customer!! VOMIT!!!! Change your gloves for heaven sake!!!! At least take them off and wash your hands!!!! Even after witnessing the lack of proper hand hygiene, I decided to try the sandwich just so I can write this review. The only thing fresh tasting is the veggies... I guess it's hard to get that wrong. There was way too much lard/butter slathered on the sandwich. They even got my order incorrect. I asked for no chili and guess what I tasted on my first bite? Yup, chili! Ugh! If you're craving a Vietnamese sandwich, go to Banh Mi K across the road or to Phuong's at the end of Dixon Street. You'll thank me later when you don't have the runs...

It did its job and kept us nourished for the walk up and down Darling Harbour. As other patrons mentioned, there's nothing spectacular, but what do you expect for a $4.95-5.95 sandwich? Come on, you can't have THAT high standards at that price. Overall... 1) Pate is quite flavorful. 2) Meat is a little scarce, but BBQ pork was packed with flavor. Chicken was so-so. 3) Veggies were fresh and pickled well! We asked for extra veggies for an additional $0.50. 4) Chili peppers are hot and spicy, just the way we like it.
