We were warmly welcomed and shown up to our room after a tour of the common areas. The sitting room on the main floor is just lovely and had many books for browsing with a cup of evening tea. Our room was small but comfortable and the canopy bed provided some "wow" factor. The original fireplace, tiled floor and decor were nice unexpected touches. The breakfast room was huge with a small pub area, and offered private restaurant style table seating (which is nice for those who aren't morning people and wanting to make new best friends at 8am with a table full of talkative strangers). The big windows let in the light and the view. We were offered the choice of made to order hot breakfasts (french toast, or eggs & bacon) and there was a long table set out with continental offerings that we were able to help ourselves to as well. Gave us amazing recommendations for other local vendors, like kayaking, tours, food, catering, etc. And they were all perfect! Judy and John, her husband, were the most gracious hosts. Basically, anything we needed, they provided without hesitation. Judy and I even planned a surprise event for everyone and it went off without a hitch! Now onto the lodging, my hubby and I stayed in room 305 and it was everything we could ever want! For all of the rooms, which I got to take a gander at because we had rented out the entire place, they were so precious. The website truly does not do the Boscawen Inn justice. It has 2 rooms so when we arrived we were the only guests. The main floor has a large sitting area as well as the dinning room and kitchen. The bedrooms are upstairs and Robin lives in an apartment downstairs. Outside he has a beautiful garden with a large pond. The design and decor are very modern and clean. Our room had lots of extra space and all the normal amenities plus some extra stuff like robes and slippers, fresh fruits and snacks and a Tassimo machine. Our bathroom was awesome with a double rain-forest shower. When we arrived we were met at the door by our host Robin and his 2 dogs. They are some of the best trained dogs I have ever met and they, with Robin were amazing hosts. Robin knows almost everything there is to know about Lunenburg and is happy to help in any way. He gave us information on the best places for dinner and even called about reservations for us. I cant say enough about how much we enjoyed having Robin as a host. What put this place up to a 5 for me was the breakfast. With our welcome package Robin gave us menus for breakfast so we could pick what we liked. Amanda and I chose the French Toast Sandwiches (Eggs, bacon and tomato between pieces of french toast). Lisa and Norm selected the English Breakfasts. When we came down in the morning we were not prepared for the quality of breakfast we were about to receive. We began with fruits and yogurt that were super fresh (Mango, Honeydew Mellon, Strawberries, Raspberries and Blueberries) Followed by our selections which turned out to be gourmet quality. For drinks we had fresh orange and apple juices as well as our choice of several different coffees and teas. It all tasted amazing and was more then enough to fill us all up. It was the worst buffet and the worst tasting food I have ever eaten! The bands that played were great but they only played to about 50 people because that was messed up too. The room was ok but they did not have any wine glasses or products that they normally have in rooms. They had this tiny little round coffee machine that I've never seen before and we had to figure out how to use that. All in all for $518.00 we certainly did not get what we paid for. The only other positive thing I have to say is the bed was comfortable and we had a good sleep.

The Kaulbach House played a big part in making this trip so special. The accommodations were fantastic! Our room was clean, well-maintained, comfortable, and noticeably larger than your typical hotel room. And I have to mention the shower -- absolutely amazing! It's those little comforts that make such a difference after a long day of hiking and exploring. The location couldn't have been better. You're roughly 20 minutes from Oak Island and surrounded by wonderful restaurants, charming coffee shops, historic sites, and everything that makes Lunenburg such a special place to visit. It was the perfect home base for our daily adventures. Another great feature was the laundry facilities downstairs. Having access to a washer and dryer makes traveling with just a small carry-on incredibly easy, especially when you're staying for several days. Our room didn't have a television, but that wasn't an issue for us. The Wi-Fi worked well, and we simply streamed whatever we wanted when we felt like winding down for the evening. What really brought the experience together, though, was the hospitality. The staff were wonderful, friendly, and welcoming, and the homeowner was easily reachable by email whenever we needed anything. Everything felt comfortable, relaxed, and personal rather than like just another hotel stay. I would absolutely recommend the Kaulbach House to couples, independent travelers, or small groups looking for a comfortable and welcoming place to stay while exploring Nova Scotia. If you can climb two flights of stairs you can stay in one of two spacious suites on the second floor. Ours had a bedroom and a sitting room with a lovely view over the harbor. The young proprietors have made all sorts of improvements to the historic house including wonderful modern bathroom facilities. Due to an unforeseen change of plans we had to leave early to catch the Digby Ferry before the regular breakfast time but we sent off with fresh homemade muffins, egg sandwiches and coffee to enjoy on our way. A happy end to a lovely visit.

I am giving them 5 stars for the following: I booked directly with the owners, and they were wonderful to work with. They were flexible when I had to change my plans slightly. The room I stayed in was perfect for my needs. It was very quiet, and the views of the bay from my room and the deck were beautiful. Breakfast every morning was wonderful, and they have the best coffee! It was lovely chatting with the owner, Joanna. She also provided me with some maps and other guides for places to visit in the area. This location is 10 minutes from Oak Island in one direction and 10 minutes from Mahone Bay Main Street in the other direction. Perfect for someone who is taking the Oak island tour. It can be a little difficult to find the first time, especially in the dark. I was using GPS and I drove right past it once or twice. I would definitely recommend this B&B for anyone coming to Mahone Bay. If I plan another trip to the area I will definitely say here again.
