AC unit stopped working - of course at the start of the hot weather - so we called around and TopLine was the company that could come out the soonest which was next day. Tech (Sam) came out and identified the capacitor as having failed and quoted $625. Having no HVAC experience/knowledge I paid and he said he had to drive home to get the part. As soon as he left I googled the AC model # & the dual capacitor costs approximately $17 - $25, meaning labor was going to be $600. When he returned I asked him to confirm that the part was about that price, which he confirmed. He proceeded to state that those were the fees to 'keep the business running' & that we were paying for his knowledge and years of experience. I'm all for paying fair labor charges for services I'm unable to perform myself, but this seemed so excessive & the tech seemed very cocky in his justification of the charges. Declined the service so I was just charged their $89 dispatch fee. Called Lee at Total Air and he was able to come same day, replace the capacitor (took all of 10 mins) & get us up & running for almost 75% less money! Appreciate this company's responsiveness, but wouldn't call them again unless it was emergent & no other company was available for several days. read more

Made a simple call to this "highly rated" company. The girl at the answering service, Saj, has the brain and functioning capacity of a 4 year old! I inquired about a simple tune up. She was at a loss for words at what that was and what it entailed. She repeatedly, and I cannot overemphasize repeatedly enough, said "it includes them coming to your home and any additional work will cost extra!" (So they come out and say hi and charge me money or do they actually do any work?) Hours later (which included her needing to obtain more information and calling me back) and after speaking to a "manager," and her repeating the same things again and again, we came to the conclusion that the $90 is thrown down the drain is for them to basically inspect the unit and provide a list of more work that may need to be done. So, no tune-up service at all... I just want a maintenance/tune up to ensure its longevity, there's nothing wrong with the unit. They lost a potential customer! And I hope to prevent others from having to deal with them. read more

They claim to offer free estimates. Do not believe this lie. We scheduled an estimate, and they sent someone over to do an on-site appointment. After they left, there were three weeks of radio silence, despite at least two phone calls asking when we might even get an ETA of the estimate. After three weeks of waiting, I finally get an email stating that they won't provide the estimate because they can't "schedule an appointment with a plumber at this time." They have no idea what our timeline might be. Could well be that WE don't have the freedom to schedule an appointment with a plumber at this time. We weren't ready to award the work; we just wanted the estimate. The work would follow. Instead, they wasted our time not just for the schedule rearranging it took to have their guy uselessly wander around our house, they also wasted time we might have better spent reaching out to a plumber that might actually want the work. This company has saved us TWICE from the most frigid days of winter -- about two years ago and then again last night at the outside of the 2019 polar vortex. On top of that, their prices seem completely fair. If you need prompt or emergency service, call Topline. The first time we called, it was early Sunday evening and I noticed our downstairs was exceptionally cold and the radiators weren't pumping out heat. It was one of (if not the) coldest nights of the winter, and we had a 2-year-old child. My husband got out our laptops and called at least 6-10 HVAC companies that touted 24-hour service. For most of them, you have to talk to an answering service that knows absolutely nothing and asks you a bunch of frustrating questions. Then you have to wait for someone who knows anything to call you back. You have know idea how long that's going to take or even if they can make it out to your house that same day. With Topline, we got right through to a real person who worked for the company, and they were able to have a repair tech here in a couple of hours. We had heat back on again that evening. The second time was last night -- right before the temps were supposed to drop to -13 before wind chill. Again, I saw that the temp downstairs was 5 degrees lower than the thermostat was set for. We could hear the steam moving through the radiators, but there was no heat coming off them. Unfortunately, we couldn't remember Topline's name and couldn't find a copy of the invoice from their first repair. So we called a different company that had done a maintenance service on the boiler in the fall. They couldn't have anyone here until this morning between 8 am and noon. As cold as it was outside, we knew we needed to try and get someone here last night or risk a very, very uncomfortable night and frozen pipes in the kitchen. I finally got online, looked at my year-end credit card statements and found Topline's name there under Home Repair. We called them, and once again, they were able to have a tech out here in about 2.5 hours. He diagnosed two possible problems, drove back to his shop for the needed parts, and had the heat running again in about 2 hours. Thanks to the way the company is set up to have techs truly on call 24/7 and to the tech braving the arctic weather, we had heat again as of 2:30 am. We will not be losing Topline's number again! read more

I had a $14k new HVAC system installed in September 2021 and it was - and continues to be - a disaster. Soup to nuts this is the most incompetent, poorly-run, mismanaged, clown show of an HVAC company in the Chicagoland area. The incompetence of the owner Sam, their office staff, and their HVAC technicians is simply mindboggling. I am STILL - eight months later - working with a different competent HVAC contractor to fix all of the ways Topline botched the installation. Do yourself a favor and don't even consider hiring them. I could write a novel about all of the ways they botched this installation, but I'll stick to the highlights - and there are many: 1. Installation tech was very rude, barely spoke English, and got mad at me when I insisted the system needed an air filter (he was going to install a new $14k system without one because his boss told him to). 2. I scheduled installation weeks in advance; was promised installation would occur in one day - it took five. So I had no A/C for five days in the middle of a very hot week at the end of the summer. 3. Topline did not bother to measure the HVAC closet or new unit; $14k unit they sold me was WAY too big for the space, so the solution was to not install an air filter; when I said I needed a filter because of my allergies, they found a slightly smaller unit but it was still enormous so now I have a 1" filter instead of the prior 4" filter; this has caused a noticeable difference in inside air quality. 4. Topline techs did $10k worth of damage to my hardwood floors; they did not put down any floor protection and shoved heavy boxes, equipment and dropped tools on hardwood floors; left many giant scratches and one deep gouge; only put down drop cloths when I pointed out the damage and asked them to. 5. Topline techs did not fully charge A/C lines and installed system incorrectly so it was running BOTH A/C and heat in the winter, causing the inside A/C lines to ice up. Topline technician told me ice was because it was cold outside so the lines were cold. Had to hire someone else to actually identify and fix the problem. 6. Topline did not correctly install thermostat so there was no fan-only function. 7. Topline idiotically installed the humidifier above intake so the spray evaporates and does not humidify; house would not get above 18% humidity in Jan/Feb this year; Topline owner told me there was nothing he could do about it. Funny, because a competent contractor fixed the problem by moving the humidifier. 8. Customer service is terrible. If they say they will call you back, they don't. 9. I also hired them to do some electrical work because the A/C was causing a ground fault. Half the job was completed. The owner Sam then explicitly instructed the electrician not to come back to finish the job. read more

I would not recommend Topline. They are overpriced. I had a Topline technician come perform a diagnostic on my broken furnace. He determined the control board had to be replaced. He quoted me $940 to replace the control board! This was late in the afternoon and was his last appointment so I told him I'll think about it overnight. I asked him to write up a work order with the estimated work. I asked him to also provide the part# for the control board because I can probably find the part for a lot less than what they were charging. He said he will make a note of my request and the main office will send me the work order the next day along with the part#. I received the work order the next day and the part# was not provided, so I called them up. Now they said, they do not provide part#s. I explained to them why I would like the part# but they refused to give it to me. They came up with all these excuses. If they truly wanted to help a customer instead of just trying to make money from their inflated prices they would have given me the part#. All they care about is making their profit. I called Topline to do a repair on my b vent for my furnace. My storm collar seal was leaking which cause an elbow and approximately 3 feet of b vent to corrode. All I needed was the the corroded sections replaced. They advised they would only do the job if they replaced all the venting down to the furnace in the basement. I have a two story home and replacing everything would entail opening up walls. It would be thousands of dollars to do that. Why would i spend $$$ on things that don't need replaced. First they lied to us about being able to properly install a new AC unit in a different area on our property just to induce us to sign an agreement to purchase a new unit. Next they told us it would be installed in a week or two. Then they told us it would actually be up to 8 weeks. Then they tried to tell us that the unit we ordered would not be available for several more weeks and tried to switch out the unit we ordered with a completely different unit made by a different company and refused to provide paperwork to specify exactly the manufacturer and model they proposed to replace it with. After letting all that slide, they showed up on the day of the installation, told us they couldn't install it where they said they would, gave us several other excuses as to why they couldn't actually install it anywhere in our home, then acted like we were weird for being confused by it. A couple of years ago I had a favorable experience with them. So favorable that I signed a maintenance contract. Had a technician out again two+ weeks ago for regular maintenance on our AC units and it was a terrible experience. First, I requested 8am and he showed at 10am. Secondly, his "maintenance call" lasted five hours - including telling me that he only needed about 30 minutes to proceed to be there another three hours (and left for an hour to go have lunch!!!). I had to ask the guy three times if he would fill up our coolant in the units and he said he kept forgetting to... I reviewed them poorly in their follow up survey, which did get a return phone call... but nothing has happened since. No discount. No apology. Now, two weeks later, one of my AC units is not cooling (4+ years old) and I suspect it's because he didn't put coolant in the unit as I asked. I have called them three times today in the last four hours to get a tech routed and get their answering service. Each time I am promised a tech or manager will call me within 30 minutes. Hasn't happened yet. Minimally the tech that initially serviced my unit needs to be addressed. They should be working to make me a happy customer considering I've had a service contract with them. That's not happening. Beware!!! You're at the mercy of how engaged, well trained and hospitable each technician is - and I had a terrible experience! read more

I recently had Top Line remove and replace my existing furnace and A/C unit...and they did an amazing job of it. I live in a 3 flat in Chicago, with the A/C on the roof. My furnace was also in a relatively awkward location (about 8' above the floor in my wall, with an opening too small to take it out. I had a few other companies come out to get quotes, and they all freaked out by the work that needed to be done (one company wouldn't even give me a quote, due to the weird location of my Furnace). When I contacted Top Line, the inspector not only said the area was no problem, but also told me that the final quoted price would not change no matter how much time they needed. That was a relief for me, because to remove the unit and replace it took about three times as long as originally anticipated ...through no fault of Top Line, they did an amazingly thorough and professional job of the whole thing. The workers that came were very professional and nice, and fixed a heating & cooling problem I've had since purchasing my place. I would recommend this team to anyone that needs HVAC work done to their home, and I will definitely be calling them again for any work I need completed in the future. The one issue I did have, however, was with the scheduling. There were a few times I needed to call and confirm a date that was incorrect in their system, but was easily resolved after my call. Just stay on top of the dates you have scheduled, and call a few days before to confirm. The work they did was so great, I can't justify putting a 4 star for the scheduling hiccups that happened. I didn't let him, but when he came back the next day, the air was running again much quicker than I thought. I called these guys on Wednesday late morning, by Thursday at 5, my system was fixed. I gave this company so many chances before writing this review. They installed a whole new HVAC system to our house this summer. There were some serious issues about the units not fitting in our home, you'd think they would have measured before trying to install them, but that's not even where things get bad. New system was in after much unneccessary hassle. Brand new AC and furnaces! We should be good to go for years! Nope. First day after installation. Downstairs AC doesn't work. They come out to repair. The brand new system. Fine. Second week after installation, Peoples Gas tried to test our furnace. It didn't work. They come out to repair. Faulty part after brand new installation. Okay. Third week after installation, upstairs AC doesn't work. Still waiting to see what this is all about. Tonight we once again get to sleep in a 95 degree room after spending thousands of dollars on a supposed brand new system. Workers have been out to my house about six times to try and repair everything they messed up the first time. So, either, they legitimately are incompetent at their work or are actively trying to scam me. I'd very much advise another company in this field. read more

Topline was nothing but helpful, courteous and smart. On 3/23 at 1030 pm we experienced a heating problem that would only get worse through the night. I called Topline and described the problem. The man on the phone actually walked me through some self-repair attempts, without charge. While that didn't work, I could tell that the man had hoped he could. They dispatched a repairman and he arrived before the 1 hour window I was given. The man walked in, put slips on his boots so as to not track in dirt and got straight to work. He was very nice and knowledgeable. He even talked me through what he was doing to diagnose and repair the problem. In the end, we needed a sensor replaced and he did so quickly and efficiently. The heat has worked great ever since. After the repairman was done, he informed us that the part he installed was a universal part, which means that he had to adjust the part to fit our furnace. He explained that it would work just fine, but he would feel more comfortable if he returned at a time and date that worked for us to install the exact right part - free of charge. Topline's prices are right in line with the rest of HVAC repair companies I've found in the city, but they are better and smarter than others I've called. Summary of my experience with Topline HVAC in Skokie My home AC hasn't been able to keep up on warmer days for a couple of summers and I finally decided to get some expert advice. I wanted to find out if it was sized improperly for my house when it was installed 10 years ago or if it just needed a tune up, Freon or other adjustments. It is a Trane unit so I went to Trane's website for a recommendation. At the top of their list close to my home was a company called Topline at 4511 Oakton St in Skokie. They had good reviews on Yelp so I called and made inquiries. Topline was very pleasant on the phone and I went over the specifics of the maintenance checklist from Trane (thorough cleaning, wet bulb/dry bulb temperatures, etc.) and the Topline's phone person checked with someone and assured me they were all covered on their $75 maintenance visit. On the day of service the tech was supposed to arrive between 8 and 9 am. He actually arrived at 9:15 which was not a problem except that I had waited an hour and was worried that he would be a no show so I had to call them to find out what was up. A courtesy call to me that he was running late would have been appreciated. When the Topline service person started to look at my compressor/condenser outside he tried to figure out how to open it up. When he couldn't quite figure out how to get the sides off, he decided he would just hose it down, something I have done many times and didn't need to pay to have done. I helped him figure out how to get the top with the fan off the unit which didn't happen without bending the unit where we missed a screw. The inside of the condenser by the compressor was full of mud and leaves which needed to be cleaned. He didn't have a wet/dry vacuum or any other way to clean out the debris and he was too short to reach it. Being taller I reached down and pulled as much of the mud and leaves out as possible, ruining some clothes in the process, but I couldn't get enough the mud out with just my hands to unplug the drain holes, so I just helped him figure out how to put it back together. Next the tech put his refrigeration gages on the compressor lines to check the high and low side pressures. He said he wasn't happy with the numbers he was seeing and didn't know what was causing the discrepancy, so he called someone for advice and was told not to worry about it, it was probably OK. When I pressed him for more info, he said he thought the system was overcharged with Freon. When I asked him if he adjusted the Freon to the correct level, he said "Nah, just leave it but don't let anyone put more Freon in it." When I asked him about the rest of the tests Trane recommended and I had confirmed prior to scheduling the visit, he said he didn't have the equipment but he knew someone who could come and figure it all out. I asked if he thought the system was sized right for my house considering its square footage, walls of windows, high ceilings, skylights, etc., he said the only thing that mattered was the square footage and the other stuff didn't matter. He said for the square footage of my house the unit was plenty large enough. I paid the tech for the service call even though my unit was still dirty and I didn't have any answers as to why I couldn't cool my house to a comfortable level. I called Topline after he left and spoke to another technician about my concerns. This tech at least understood thermal flows and how windows, insulation, etc., not just square footage affected sizing of HVAC units, but he was no more helpful in solving my issues. I explained to him that it was unsatisfactory to me that I was only able to cool my house down to 78-80 degrees on warmer days even though the AC unit ran 24/7 and I would like to know if it was a mechanical problem or a sizing problem. He just kept repeating that I was doing better than a lot of his customers and I should be happy with what I had. He said the heat wave wouldn't last forever and I should just be patient. When I kept trying to rephrase the question to get some useful information, he would just tell me that I could go on calls with him to see what real problems people were having and I should be grateful my unit was working as well as it was. When I asked him about why the numbers on the gages didn't read as expected he said not to worry. I am no refrigeration expert, but I believe the super-heat and sub-cooling numbers should let you know accurately if the charge is correct and within the manufacturer's specs, not a "I think it is overcharged but leave it alone?" I can't imagine what kind of HVAC licenses or certifications, if any, my Topline technician had, but he was not able to help me solve my AC problems. Everyone at Topline was very pleasant, but my only option now is call someone else and start over. read more

I had a very bad experience with Topline after using them for several years. They came out and said I needed a lot of work done on my furnace and it would take half a day - costing $450. Well, it took 30 minutes and they still charged me $450. When we called to complain they wouldn't budge on the price. Plus, they told me my furnace needs to be replaced soon but when I had it inspected by an energy company, they claim it is good for a few more years. I won't be using them again! read more

We had two 30 year old boilers, where they decided to stop functioning as needed a few days into December where the temps hit 10 degrees :(. The house was beginning to get cold and we were getting worried. After searching the internet for a reputable furnace repair service, I was able to get in contact with James from Topline HVAC Inc. I remember thinking, I hope they can come out and fix our furnace right away but thought I would need to have to schedule to get it fixed in a few days because of the winter timing. After describing the issue with our furnace and mentioning how urgent we needed it fixed, James was able to stop by in an hour and check out the furnace prob. After running his diagnostics he mentioned the issues and their causes and quickly gave me some options. After weighing the options we decided to take the route of replacing both boilers with new high efficient worry free ones (big difference in furnace technology) and correcting the setup of the check valves rather than fixing one or two parts with no guarantee that boilers were going to go bad later this year or next since they were so old. After deciding to go with the complete project, James quickly acted to get the ball rolling by assembling a team (which included Andrew and Sam) to help orchestrate the work, obtain the new furnaces, and all needed parts in very little time. After working non stop all night to get the old furnaces out and install the new one, we were with heat again! :) we were very pleased with the outcome. Without James, Andrew and Sam's skilled, experienced knowledge and expertise, I don't think we would have been able to get the furnaces fixed in such little time. Our furnace stopped working at 8pm on a 10 degree night - Topline tech AJ came out within a couple hours and got it up and working temporarily for the night and came back in the morning with the necessary replacement parts. We called Topline to do an inspection of the 2 units we have in our house since we moved in about a year ago. We had some miscommunication problems at first but eventually had a technician named Scott come out to our house. He was super nice, very courteous and professional. After seeing that we had barely any heat coming out of the second unit, he thoroughly inspected a couple of things, ran some tests and knew the problem right away. He was nice enough to fix it that day and the difference in heat was dramatic. We could tell right away that he had fixed what was broken. Before using Topline get a second quote. My furnace would not come on and I called Topline. They came out next day and diagnosed the problem as bad exhaust blower and gave me a quote of 1,800 which seemed high. When I asked for details they would not provide only saying it was a complicated job.. I never trust a service company that won't break out the costs. Of 3 companies I called - they a) answered, b) said they would call back within 5 minutes, c) they called back within 5 minutes and confirmed arrival time, d) Sam called 30 mins before arriving to check the time still worked, e) Sam arrived on time. So the set-up was great and then Sam arrived and was super professional. Identified the problem, explained in detail what was wrong and fixed it promptly. He explained other services they offer but was not selly and pushy. All in all I have nothing but praise for this company and would recommend them in a heartbeat. read more

My AC unit stopped working last June. I called Topline and they replaced the fan motor at a cost of $612. A few weeks later my high pressure reset starts tripping sporadically. It would run up to a few weeks between resets. This summer it has been doing it much more often so I called Topline back out. The tech came to inspect and found nothing wrong with it, hit the reset button, recommended to my wife that we just replace the entire unit. Then charged us $89 for the service call. I've had a service contract for 4 years with them. They never contact me for bi-annual service. They are rarely proactive calling to say they can't make their appointment. I've had good technicians and rookies servicing my rooftop unit. I'd say there must be better companies out there. I think their front office is in dissarray. read more

I was impressed by how quickly they were able to respond to my request and come get the job done. The technicians were very polite and answered any question i proceeded to ask them. They were able to fix my furnace and get it up and running again so i wouldn't have to endure the cold weather to come. Steve was absolutely professional and polite throughout the whole ordeal. He also triple checked to make sure all my HVAC needs were being met and i truly appreciated his concern. I would like to help everyone here who is looking for a great heating and cooling company. I had a problem with my AC when the heat waves arrived earlier than expected this year in Chicago. I called Topline and explained the situation, that I have a 8 months old girl and how we are in need for the AC to run. The Technician promised me that he will be at my house in less than one hour, and actually he did and fixed the problem. I am not an expert when it comes to this kind of stuff but I love a company when it puts your comfort as a priority and above everything else. I called Topline HVAC, Inc. to get an estimate on a boiler replacement after one of their techs said it needed to be replaced and they sent the most unprofessional people I have ever had the displeasure of meeting named Tony. All he did was try and sell me a water softener and more equipment for my house I think only works one day a month and tried to make his quota up on me. I felt like I was trying to get robbed by the mentally handicapped and jack the ripper this guy really made me feel uncomfortable. He kept making weird comments and would say one thing then when I asked questions he would say another it seemed like whatever it took to make the sale. I felt so uncomfortable I called another company and it turned the boiler just needed a new Pump that cost thousands less than the estimate I would demand my money back for the service call but that Tony really freaks me out I rather lose the money then have that company back. read more
