Soil Friends Farm & Market first popped on my radar via Health Conspiracy (Custer Crossfit) as Soil…read moreFriends offers a CSA box. I'll be looking to become a Full Shareholder ($800 full season, weekly share that includes Family admission ticket to strawberry ice cream social, 1 Flat you-pick strawberries, Fall harvest dinner) or Half Shareholder ($450 for every week) in November/December so I'm ready for the full summer! Soil Friends also offers a flexible payment plan, which makes it a bit more affordable Payments can be made on your terms as long as the share is paid in full before the first CSA share is distributed for the year. In the meantime, I've been following all their fantastic Facebook updates. They have hard cider now (very tasty and not too sweet) as well as donuts. But, I stopped by today for some produce (green beans, jalapenos, and watermelon)! I was very tempted to buy ALL the things as the produce looked so fresh and beautiful! The space is also very family friendly with corn hole, ample seating & kids' play equipment. I can see why their socials, dinners could be very lively and fun. Soil Friends also posts up at the Kalamazoo Farmers' Market! But, it's worth a drive out to their farm in Augusta! 207/365

You can grab a fresh hard cider, fresh doughnuts and hangout while the kids play. Don't forget to grab some organic produce before you leave too. Group # - 12 Purpose…read more- Family Tradition Pros - Gene's is a place you can spend quality time with the family for about 15-20 minutes. Not a lot has changed since we started to go over 12 years ago. Cons - It's becoming an outdated Farm, as weird as it is to say that. The upkeep has been on the decline - this place could be a gold mine for the fall season if done right and with a little bit of marketing; but, I don't see that turning around anytime soon. If it wasn't a family tradition we wouldn't probably give it a go anymore. Likelihood to return (1-10) - 3 Reason - Pumpkin cost is up there. Nothing is ever new or exciting to see. Back in the day you could pet the animals that came ip to the fence - those are even going away.

I gotta say that while there are few people you will meet in this lifetime that you encounter briefly and leave a lasting impression on you, we had the opportunity to meet Gene the pumpkin man himself. Let me say that Gene is one of those guys you'll meet and never forget. A very charismatic fella, 80 years young, rocking an orange shirt and orange cowboy hat to go along with his orange themed farm, and he's been slangin' pumpkins since 1957. Eager to talk and get to know you a bit and even shares many stories from his lifetime. It's easy to see why he's a local favorite. Plenty of pumpkins to choose from and in all shapes and sizes. Everything is marked pretty clearly on price as well. I even noticed a small booth where they sell fresh honey! Cool! Note that they only take cash or checks (no credit cards) but Gene also seems to use the honor system as well where you can pay later on if you like. While we appreciated the gesture, we ended up purchasing two mini pumpkins with the little cash we did have. Gene finding out we had drove to see his farm from Chicago ended up picking out a bag full of assorted squash for us to take home and enjoy. And of course, some verbal instruction on how to prepare each one. After spending some time talking with him, he even gave us some local spots worth checking out nearby. What a guy! Nothing but good things to say about Gene and his pumpkin patch. Definitely worth a stop to see Gene and his orange themed farm if you find yourself in Kalamazoo! 'Til next time, cheers! 251/365

One of the hanging baskets I bought was a strawberry plant and it did very well on all of the big strawberries it produced. I still am getting strawberries! I bought two quarts of strawberries in June and thought I would get the larger ones but they were not very sweet. Wish I would have purchased the smaller ones. Also bought pound cake that Verhage Farms makes and it was very good The vegetables and fruit are a little pricey and I wont buy the fruit that stays outside in the sun until sold. They are way too ripe. I always go back to this place and try to find something else to try. Glad it is near by.

First: If they have pear cider available, GET IT. It is truly, honestly extraordinary. We went through a few gallons this year, and each drop seems to be nectar of the gods. They are closed for winter, obviously. But when they reopen in spring, here's what to expect: * Enormous tubs of whatever is in season, parked right out front of their doors * Inside shopping for things that need refrigeration (cider!), including lovely bags of spring greens that we always get, and veggies that don't need to be out in the open air * Sort of odd parking. The handicap parking is far away for me. There are two close spots to the right of the doors, and that is not a difficult walk * SO MANY KINDS of everything: apples, squash, pumpkins, well, you know Michigan harvests. You'll find all that and more here. * In the summer, LOVELY jalapenos that we stock up on and freeze for winter *Reasonable prices Tip: Weekends are busy and crowded. Mondays take a hot minute to be restocked! We go here SO often. It's a great place, with friendly people.
