If you're looking for fresh fruits and veggies, but someone else you're with just won't have any of those, rest assured they'll have a few sugary goods to select from as well. There's also a playground for small children on the backside of the market, which makes it easy to bring the family! This location is about 1/3 the size of the Bank St. market (from what I've been told) which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but may not be what some new folks might expect. The only downside to a smaller market is that there are fewer price points to select from for your produce. Other than that it's a great place!

I bought two quarts of strawberries in June and thought I would get the larger ones but they were not very sweet. Wish I would have purchased the smaller ones. Also bought pound cake that Verhage Farms makes and it was very good The vegetables and fruit are a little pricey and I wont buy the fruit that stays outside in the sun until sold. They are way too ripe. I always go back to this place and try to find something else to try. Glad it is near by.

First: If they have pear cider available, GET IT. It is truly, honestly extraordinary. We went through a few gallons this year, and each drop seems to be nectar of the gods. They are closed for winter, obviously. But when they reopen in spring, here's what to expect: * Enormous tubs of whatever is in season, parked right out front of their doors * Inside shopping for things that need refrigeration (cider!), including lovely bags of spring greens that we always get, and veggies that don't need to be out in the open air * Sort of odd parking. The handicap parking is far away for me. There are two close spots to the right of the doors, and that is not a difficult walk * SO MANY KINDS of everything: apples, squash, pumpkins, well, you know Michigan harvests. You'll find all that and more here. * In the summer, LOVELY jalapenos that we stock up on and freeze for winter *Reasonable prices Tip: Weekends are busy and crowded. The chalk signs give it a quaint feel. Portage's seemed to be less busy than Kalamazoo's. There were a few of the same vendors (ex. the cheese, the chips/salsa/tamale and the popcorn vendor) and a few that were unique. Kalamazoo has way more food trucks and more "hand made" non-food items. Kalamazoo's is definitely bigger and has a larger variety of produce vendors. Winner: Kalamazoo's Farmers Market

Portage market started out so small, it's grown so fast! They even have sarkozy bakery ! Who can go wrong with that?? I love bringing my kids, letting them pick out what they want. Nice local vendors as well, including one I have to shoutout here: ToadWorks Art. Not only was the vendor friendly, she made these cute little hand-painted frogs that my girls loved as souvenirs. My oldest left hers behind in the rental car on accident, and I messaged this biz owner and she sent me another one! Above and beyond. Additionally, there was good produce here, especially the berries. We even pieced together ingredients for an AirBNB meal: fresh pasta, tomatoes and basil for sauce, garlic, onions and green beans. It's conveniently in the heart of this small downtown, easy to access and easy to park. Loved the whole vibe here.

I'm extremely cautious with my food and would rather go hungry than put garbage in my body. Maple City Market had exactly what I was looking for. They even had my favorite yogurt in the cacao flavor, which I typically can't find, at least in Muskegon. Staff was super helpful and friendly and didn't question me over not wearing a mask... thank you. No doubt, I'll be back every time in town.
