He is more interested to know why I don't have any children than he is to enquire about why I haven't had my duck down duvet cleaned since the iron age, and why he's never been commissioned to perform a service wash on my behalf. His face alternates between quizzicality with a hint of condemnation, and alarm tinged with more than a little consternation. I just smile my answers back at him, explaining my position in a light-hearted way that's suggestive of a belief that I have no need to justify my decisions to anyone. I like Munir, and I like his laundrette. It is simple and unaffected, just like the man himself... what you see is what you get. They accept dry cleaning jobs, but send the dry clean items off to be serviced elsewhere, and so you may have to wait slightly longer for this service than at other outlets that have dry cleaning facilities in-house. The business is owned by Mrs Crean,who owns another outlet on City Road, and so has a manager to run this shop on her behalf. It's a friendly little laundrette, with a good number of machines.

What I do know now for sure is that the Elliot's own this laundrette as well as the one located on Broadway, and that the other Top Hat Dry Cleaners & Launderettes around Cardiff, of which there are several, are owned by other people. But, as to why they call this one the Wash Inn, I remain utterly clueless! I guess they are just playing the multiple name game that most of the businesses in this little stretch of Albany Road like to indulge in... long story! Competition in this neck of the woods for laundry services is pretty fierce. But the people of Roath are clearly well above the national average when it comes to personal hygiene and sanitation. All three of the laundrettes in this area are within a five minute walk of each other, and have been around for an awful long time, which can only suggest one thing. I went again a few months ago but they couldn't find it. I have just had a phone call from the manager, who very politely informed me that it's lost. Being the lady in the dry cleaning shop probably isn't the most stimulating of jobs and you do have to smell dry cleaning and those strange plastic wrappers all the time. So who can blame her for popping out. However she will be back shortly so twiddle your thumbs or buy a coffee or chat to someone passing. A little confusingly they are sometimes also called Cathedral Cleaners and that's because they are part of a group that does have a branch near the Cathedral. They also arrange carpet cleaning and shoe repair.
