Still we all have those occasions when we need to rely on someone professional to get you out of a mess. On this occasion I managed to spill some food down the front of a borrowed gown (a borrowed gown that I hadn't mentioned I was borrowing). Having never needed to use a dry cleaners before I opted for Johnson's cos its a chain which I figure means it has to be decent. Anyway they were very quick and thorough and removed all traces of the stain. The service wasn't too cheap, I'm sure there must be better out there but this one got me out of loads of trouble so money well spent!

British Red Cross is located on Central Square, which is the line of shops leading to Cardiff Central Railway Station. If I have a few extra minutes before I have to catch a train, this shop (along with neighbours Marie Curie Cancer Care and Cancer Research UK charity shops) is where I go. I usually come to this particular shop to see what kind of records are on offer (yes, I love the thrill of the hunt!). This time around, David Bowie's "Life on Mars" 7 inch single was propped on the shelf for a meagre £2.50, and sat behind it was Elton John's "Madman Across the Water" priced at £8. This charity shop offers your usual range of second-hand books, clothing, CDs, greeting cards, and of course, a selection of albums. The shop assistants here are always cheerful and helpful, which are some of the reasons I keep coming back.

There's a number of charitable causes that I like to support, but I still always prefer to buy things from the British Red Cross wherever possible. They do the most amazing work in war torn areas around the world, and are led by such compassionate values that I totally trust their mission! They also take huge personal risks to protect and save the lives of others... really very commendable. This shop is really well located in the close to the centre of town, and is particularly good for books. Prices are really reasonable, and the service is impeccable, (as it is at all of the British Red Cross charity shops).

It is particularly true of the Wellfield Road site. A lot of businesses try and fail to stick on this stretch of road, and with two other laundrettes with dry cleaning services attached, that are within easy walking distance of this outlet, with one only a quick stroll around the corner, the competition is more that a little fierce! But Freye Dry Cleaners have got themselves covered. Not only have they got an enviable reputation to trade on, but they have also got three branches in three very different areas. Each can offer the other fianacial back-up if required. It also means that they can afford to engage in a bit of a price war with the competition. It's possible to get four items or clothes dry cleaned for £14.00 at Derek Freye Dry Cleaning and any duvet, regardless of size, can be cleaned for £12.00.

Luckily the new one way system does not affect them too much, and the recession has not made too much of a dent in their popularity either. The only thing that has really threatened the business in a significant way in recent times is that a new shop has opened up offering ironing services a few doors down. But even this isn't presenting any kind of threat to the livelihood of the business. Fabricare also offer service washes and ironing services. They accept dry cleaning jobs, but send the dry clean items off to be serviced elsewhere, and so you may have to wait slightly longer for this service than at other outlets that have dry cleaning facilities in-house. The business is owned by Mrs Crean, who owns another outlet on City Road, and so has a manager to run this shop on her behalf. It's a friendly little laundrette, with a good number of machines.
