I was out of town on my way to Florida when the incident occurred on November 19, 2024, which was the first morning of my trip. My sister was called and quickly rushed Laker to Kryder Vet in Granger, IN. The vet decided not to traumatize him that day, so the following day, they had to put him under anesthesia to clean his wounds. I changed my flights and returned home immediately. Laker is not just a pet; he is part of the family and an AKC show dog who has won many awards. Will Short, the owner of Bunk and Biscuit, stated that the medical bills would be covered by the owner of the Pit Bull. Laker has had to visit a groomer multiple times to remove mats, and he has been seeing Dr. Block weekly, as recommended by Kryder, to help him recover from the trauma. This was the first time something like this had ever happened to him. It took four staff members to get the Pit Bull off Laker. Bunk and Biscuit has live cameras throughout the facility, allowing owners to watch their dogs. When I requested the footage the next day, I was informed it was no longer available. Will then began contacting my vet to alter the details of what actually occurred and downplayed the incident. I had to instruct my vet not to communicate with him further. Since Laker was a puppy, he has been coming to Bunk twice a week, sometimes more, totaling thousands of dollars over the course of just over a year. Multiple staff members have confided in me about what happened and that Will is attempting to cover it up. However, he is now refusing to pay the vet bills, the groomer's fees, and the expenses incurred with Dr. Block. Will has become very confrontational. Laker also picked up Kennel Cough from there and Will never covered those costs and refused to tell other clients about it.

Even though our family was pretty social, she was never part of our social life. When people came over, we put her in a locked room. She rarely went in the car anyplace, and going to the vet was a nightmare. Last summer, I turned Aubrey's world upside down. I got married and moved into a new house. This household included another dog and a special needs 26 year old. The first few weeks were stressful. Aubrey was very anxious and my stepson did not read her cues. There were a few bite incidents and nobody could relax. I didn't know what to do and thought I would have to surrender my dog. I looked online and saw Kasten's Dog Training, which I knew to be close to my new house in Elkhart. I truly doubted that anyone could help my six year old dog. I called and scheduled an online interview. I remember feeling very optimistic after that first phone call. Right away, I felt like there was someone who understood what we were going through, and was going to help me keep my dog. I had nothing much to lose, so I signed her up! Aubrey participated in Program 5- Behavioral Modification for Aggressive Dogs and Dogs with a Bite History. She spent 21 days at Kasten's split into two sessions. After the first 9 days, I came to pick her up and immediately noticed a difference in her demeanor. She completed the second half of her training right before Christmas. When my son came home college, he was shocked to see how much better she was behaving. She had a new confidence and was no longer so anxious. She was a treat to take on walks and we didn't have to worry about her darting out the door anytime it opened. We have taken Aubrey to Kasten's for boarding several times in the past year. Being able to board her, and know she is safe, has been such a blessing. The fact that she was receiving refreshers as she stayed there was an added bonus. Before coming to Kasten's, I never would have even thought that I could board her anywhere. The trainers at Kasten's were so helpful and did such a great job with Aubrey. They worked tirelessly with her, and I could see the extra effort that they put in to get her to feel more comfortable, and eventually enjoy training sessions. Kasten's Dog Training has improved our family's life. We can now enjoy our active social lives and include Aubrey. She jumps happily into her kennel when told, walks on a leash like a show dog and even goes on trips to the hardware store several times a month. She and my stepson have a mutual understanding, and both of them feel much safer around each other. Making that phone call to Kasten's was truly one of the best decisions that I have ever made. Thank you to everyone at Kasten's - you have made such a difference in our lives!

I would highly recommend them for superior emergency care for dogs or cats when you know you can't wait to see your vet and your animal needs a doc. Around 2:00 AM, our dog began experiencing severe breathing issues. When we called VCA, we were told there was only one veterinarian available and they were in surgery, and that we would need to drive an additional hour and a half to Byron Center for care. We attempted to find a closer emergency option, but ultimately began the drive to Byron Center. Shortly after getting on the highway, our dog's condition worsened dramatically--she could not breathe and was in distress. In a panic, I called VCA again, begging them to allow us to bring her in. They eventually agreed to have a veterinary technician examine her. When we arrived, she was taken to the back immediately. We were later told that her throat was swollen shut and filled with blood and mucus. They were able to place an oxygen tube and initially said her breathing stabilized. Tragically, she then suffered a heart attack and passed away. I strongly believe that if she had been allowed to receive care immediately--when we first called--her condition could have been addressed sooner and the outcome may have been different. Being turned away during a life-threatening emergency cost us precious time. Adding to this, we were charged $350 for CPR, which was never discussed or authorized. We specifically requested oxygen support--not resuscitation efforts--and this lack of communication is deeply concerning. For a full week, I have attempted to speak with a practice manager regarding this situation and have yet to receive a call back. Each time I contact the office, I am given vague responses with no resolution. Additionally, I was told by a staff member that this situation was "basically my fault" for not immediately driving an hour and a half away, rather than seeking care closer. This response was both inappropriate and hurtful. Finally, I question why Paw Paw Vet would recommend this location as an emergency resource if they are unable or unwilling to provide immediate care when it is critically needed. We are devastated by the loss of our dog, Rosa, and deeply disappointed in how this situation was handled at every level.
