I have to say it's been some time since I've been to top donuts. It seemed like last year when I go it would have very little selection left and quite honestly the guy was never very friendly. This morning after spending $14 at Dunkin' Donuts just to have them out of everything that I wanted I decided to drop in literally just to get some donut holes for my daughter. When I walked in, I was amazed at their selection. Every donut looked amazing and fresh and they have probably the best kolaches I've ever tried. Chapel Hill sausage, Boudin, they even have sausage and egg breakfast egg rolls, which I'm excited to try. I think I'm looking forward to my strawberry glazed doughnutwith apple jack on top. Came here based on good reviews and amazing pictures. This place is no longer like this. Just came here at 9am and the donut cases were less than half empty. No specialty donuts if any kind. No maple bacon donuts that I read about. No holes, no cream filled donut. So got an "eclair" which was pretty much a chocolate donut bar overfilled with cream. Wasn't a true pastry with thick chocolate, very sad. Got a few of the usual donuts, glazed rings and pink sprinkle donuts. They were pretty small. Tasted like a simple donut. They were nothing like the reviews from years ago stated. I got a sausage kolache and it was better than Shipley donuts kolache, the bread was more pastry like and buttery, but not as big or fresh tasting as kolache Facotry. I called right before I got in my car so they're waiting for me when I got to the shop (they don't have it on display, but will make them on request). They have tons of cute pastel glazed donuts and a variety of savory kolaches/pastries (breakfast sandwiches, boudain, egg rolls, etc). I go out of my way (pass 3 other donut shops) to get here and it's so worth it. I'm always looking for more from donut shops. There are so many great opportunities to experiment. Top Donuts has done just that. I was surprised to see an egg roll filled with egg and sausage. It was amazing. Best thing I have ever had at a donut shop. The wrapper was thicker than you'd normally see from a fried spring roll, and super crispy. The inside was soft, with very tasty sausage. It was a great contrast. The Kolaches were also tasty. It's a subtle difference that makes a big impact. Less dough. I think the reason I like these so much more than other places is that each bite has more meat. No bites of only bread at Top Donut. *Below are shameless requests that were inspired by the egg roll. The experience made me think. I love boudin. I always want to like boudin Kolaches. I just never really like the boudin and bread combo. It's too soft for me. I would love to see a boudin egg roll. That crispy outside with the soft rice inside would be amazing. If Top Donut ever makes a batch, I'll be first in line to try it. Another shameless request because there are so many foods I would love to see served a donut shops: Chinese fried/steamed pork buns. For the uninitiated, think meatball wrapped in dough. Reminds me a lot of a kolache. If a restaurant ever put that on the menu, I'd put them on my list of regular breakfast spots. *I'm also kind of curious. Why is an egg roll called an egg roll. Great donuts!! Thats all you need from a donut shop. Additionally, the cashier lady was so nice and she provided us with exceptional service. Overall I am beyond satisfied with this donut shot especially for visiting during Covid. My only small complaint would be the selection but this is because I usually stop by about an hour before close, so that is to be expected :) 5 stars. I recommend these donuts. The donuts were super fresh and the kolaches and savory treats were amazing! Breakfast eggsrolls . Let me repeat: BREAKFAST EGGROLLS!!! They were so delicious, I've never had anything like that before. The bacon and sausage kolache was wonderful with a real, while slice of bacon in it. The mini sausage kolaches were great too! They were like donut hole sized kolache bites. AND THE DRINKS! We had the Vietnamese Iced Coffee and Chai Tea and they were both excellent, especially he Vietnamese coffee. Everything was so good, we came back the next day. The man who took care of us the first morning even poked his around and asked if we wanted our iced drinks again! Very cheap, the donuts are really good, it's a donut place and they sell tacos and bacon filled croissants, pretty much anything you could ask for. Haha. Good service, the employee is really nice and talkative but not a fluent English speaker. This Top Donuts is not only my favorite donut place ever but also one of my favorite businesses in the area. I always feel special when I walk in and the employees already know my usual order (10/10 would recommend the apple fritter).
