Between my me and my husband we have 4 left feet... The thought of the first dance made me queasy…read moreof awkwardly tripping all over each other or swaying lifelessly on the dance floor for a painful ~4 minutes as our friends and family watched on. While browsing Groupon I noticed a deal for dance lessons at db studios, which was very conveniently located for us. Of course I browsed reviews ahead of time to make sure we weren't walking into a trap, and noticed that they had several glowing reviews on here. Congratulations to db studios too for celebrating their 1 year anniversary! The owner and instructor, Kendall responded immediately to our initial e-mail inquiry and we set up a FREE consultation dance lesson with her. I may have inadvertently made her update the website since it now says the Groupon/Yelp deals can't be combined. Oops! Kendall welcomed us to db studios, which is located within the Newton Congregational Church. The private lessons are rehearsed on the upper stage, which mimics the size of most venue dance floors. For the consultation she listened to our song to determine what type of ballroom dance style would fit best and we decided on the fox trot. We had the option of another style, but it did not allow for us to move around the stage as much. During the first lesson we learned the basic step as well as the box step. (I know, we are starting from the ground up here.) She worked with each of us individually by having us follow her side by side along with dancing with us directly. For each class she took notes to give us specific points of improvement to work on outside of class. We highly appreciated Kendall's flexible hours as I often work quite late. So we've had lessons starting at 8 PM. It's great that for Monday - Wednesday she is available until 10 PM! In addition, Kendall worked with our limited budget and we accomplished all that we hoped within the 3 official dance lessons. If the Groupon or Yelp offer is still available, I would definitely recommend taking advantage of the limited time offer. Regular priced private lessons are $85 for 45 minutes. I imagine that since this is a relatively new business she is just building up positive buzz and clientele base. Otherwise there are other comparable dance studios you can contact (most of them don't post the rates) to find out if their dance studios packages are more suitable. Our only…read moregoal was to not look like complete idiots - something that could have happened since we are horrible at dancing. Johnny, who is also the owner of Balera Ballroom Dance Studio, was our instructor. He was absolutely fantastic. Johnny had so much patience with us and was able to teach us the two-step, despite our lack of rhythm or ability. Johnny made our dance lessons fun, and we began to look forward to our weekly dance lessons. It is also because of Johnny that we heard roars of applause as we did every turn and twirl during our first dance on our wedding day. I highly recommend Balera to any bride and groom looking to learn a few dance steps for their first song. To warn you however, do not be intimidated when you first step on the dance floor. Balera teaches some very experienced ballroom dancers in addition to beginners. One time, when we had one of our dance lessons, the world champion of ballroom dance was there giving lessons to people who could have been national champions. If anything, by having these very experienced dancers with you on the dance floor makes you feel like you are part of Dancing with the Stars!

I learned about this place through a living social deal. Prior to purchasing the deal i checked the…read morewebsite for a discription of what the clas entailed and it stated: "A wedding is the beginning of your journey together and our goal is to create a first dance that is unique, memorable and expresses the love you share as a couple. Learning to dance is an opportunity to learn and grow together while accomplishing the goal of a first dance for your wedding. Our qualified instructors take the time to teach not only the basics, but are able to choreograph a dance from beginning to end to the wedding song you choose." My fiance and I took the "wedding dance" class based on the offer that was provided by living social- and were taught 3 steps and the instructor proceeded to "up-sell" us. I understand that everyone's ability is different and as such what can be accomplished in a 45 min class needs to be clearer. Rather than just offering one class they need to specifically spell out that the program entails multiple classes and the instructor has no intention of choreographing a dance during the first lesson. Regardless, we had fun and our instructor was friendly and enthusiastic; i just wish the information we were provided was clearer

According to the club's website, membership terms, and all publicly available policies, there is absolutely no mention of any additional fee for a child to participate in Family Swim, especially not during the 4-5 PM session. Despite this, today we were denied entry and were told that we must pay an additional fee -- the staff even mentioned $10 for the child, and later $80 -- although none of these fees appear anywhere in the official documentation. When we were stopped at the entrance, we asked the front desk staff to show us exactly where on the website it states that a child requires an additional payment for Family Swim from 4-5 PM. The receptionist looked but could not find any such information. She then sent us to the manager. The manager spoke to us in an extremely rude and dismissive manner. Instead of providing proof or pointing to written policies, he simply said: "If we let everyone in, we will destroy our business." This statement was made sharply, with a clear tone of hostility, and with no attempt to justify or explain the alleged fee. It was obvious that his decision was not based on any written rule but purely on his own judgment at the moment. From a legal perspective: Charging undisclosed, non-transparent fees violates basic consumer protection principles, including unfair or deceptive practices under Massachusetts law. Denying access to a service that is already included in a paid family membership constitutes improper performance of contractual obligations. Introducing new fees "on the spot," without written policy or prior notice, is inconsistent with standards of good faith and fair dealing. We left extremely disappointed. This club demonstrates that it can invent new charges at any moment, deny access to members, and treat customers with open disrespect. We do not recommend Waverly Oak Club to anyone.
