' I am surprised that so many reviewers said they were asked to empty their pockets and purses to check them for shoplifting. At least they didn't make me do that. Visiting Jekyll, I was in need of extra baking dishes for Xmas dinner. Every year our rentals never have enough and it's not worth transporting fragile bakeware 800mi to cook one meal. My quest turned into a curiosity to just seek out each thrift store to review so I know where to go next time this happens at my rental house. The associates at Hello Goodbuy were not friendly, neither greeting us when we walked in, nor when I asked if they knew if they had any bundt pans. Everyone had a southern accent and was white. We felt seen as outsiders, as happens in certain places around here. Intended or not, they came off like that kind of place. There were a lot of clothes and other knick-knacks, and some furniture. It was organized but felt very cramped and things were outdated in a worn 5-10yo way, not a cool vintage way. I left after a look at a small section that had anything resembling bakeware. Not much for kitchen, and nothing I needed. I always appreciate the mission of a thrift store, but this one felt so fundamentally (unwelcoming) different from ones like Gather or Goodwill where I saw all kinds of people shopping, and I felt very uncomfortable.

I found some sweet bells, but when I spotted the giant jug under a table I held my breath as I turned it over and saw the name Dover- Seagrove! The tag was labeled as such- 1987 Seagrove pottery- score! I snapped pictures and took the jug home too- already sent photos to my friends in Seagrove, I know the family studio it was made in! I guess I wasn't very clear on what to expect after looking at their website before my visit. I much enjoy the Artists' Guild shop at Goodyear Cottage on Jekyll or Glynn Visual Arts on SSI and I had the impression that this would be Brunswick's version of those handmade art stores, but it wasn't. There was a paint-your-prefab-ceramics class going on in the back studio and people gathered around a table in the cafe making a craft or something. I know these are popular with certain people but Build-a-Bear type ceramics are not for me. The store portion is laid out much like an Anthropologie vibe, made to look like everything is precious and "deep." Merch was more crafty than artsy, like Etsy as a shop, with Etsy prices. All artsy-looking commercially produced goods or handicrafts rather than actual art--I saw no OOAK items in the shop, nothing actually handmade either unless the bead earrings were handmade on a loom but again, identical duplicates of them. It seemed like everything had to be a certain matching aesthetic and be a similar BoHo Brooklyn "Beige Mom" style. Brunswick can be diverse for those who embrace it, so the store name "Makers BWK" is a little misleading in that sense. When I think "Southern" + "art" I go to folk art or Gullah crafts, memory quilts, face jugs, etc. I get it if that's too traditional and established for the under-35s, but Brooklyn BoHo? I guess it's a novelty this far from NYC. Also, as you can see in my pictures, there was no coastal art representation for the Golden Isles. Unlike the Artists' Guild shop at Goodyear Cottage on Jekyll or Glynn Visual Arts on SSI, it just seems like there is no sense of locality infused in any of the products Makers BWK had. They mention goods from Haiti online so I appreciate if those are Fair Trade but there was nothing to explain what was local. The craft market candles? The mass-produced sketchbooks? Jewelry, candles, soap, cards, sketchbooks, random snacks... again, not OOAK original art. It is what it is, and good for those who like it. It's artsy craft market stuff. It's just not for me and was frustrating to waste time to visit when online it seemed depicted as actual art for sale.
