On 11/24/23 my family and I stopped at Churchill's as a last stop during Black Friday shopping. I…read morewas looking at some light-up Angel ornaments hanging from a tree when one dropped to the floor and shattered. There was an employee who looked over at me in disgust and seemed quite appalled that one of the (thousands of) glass ornaments was broken by a customer. I apologized and helped clean it up, meanwhile the employee (dark, short hair) never said a word to me. She carried the ornament over to the counter. I made my way over to the counter and the broken ornament was sitting there. It was obvious there was a discussion about it. I purchased 2 of the ornaments I had been looking at before that one broke and noticed I was charged half price for the broken ornament. When I asked why, the clerk, who I believe was a manager, said that it was store policy. However, nowhere in the store did I see that noted. There was no signage that made me aware I would be charged if I broke anything. I was really upset about this. It was clearly not intentional that the ornament fell to the floor and broke. You would have thought I committed a crime by the way the employee looked at me and the way the manager did not seem to care that I was upset. I had intended to come back the next day to get my Christmas tree and a wreath, but decided to give the former Rolling Green, Gardener's Supply, my business. So, for charging me the $5.50 and treating me so poorly, Churchill's lost out on a larger sale. And Gardener's Supply valued my business which is more than I can say for Churchill's.

This used to be such a wonderful place to explore and find unique and beautiful plants. In the…read moreshort time that Gardener's Supply (an out of state company) has been running it it now feels generic, commercial, and under stocked - missing the beautiful perennials and even original annuals they once had. I used to go in with one idea and leave with a cart overstuffed with what would become a whole new garden. On my last visit I only bought a pair of gloves... Beautiful displays of healthy roses and hydrangeas used to grace the front welcoming in the coastal summer... this year- lots of empty ceramic pots and anemic 4th of July plant displays that look reminiscent of Lowe's. So far Gardener's Supply has managed to ruin in a short time what used to be an excellent nursery. Gardeners don't want more of the same that they can get everwhere else...

We quickly realized that as the only three people of color in the store, this was intentional. The only comfort we felt was from the front staff when we were checking out. Overall we felt extremely uncomfortable and do NOT recommend this place to any person of color who want to visit. This was a hostile environment while we simply just wanted to look at plants. We were initially excited to visit this place, but our whole experience was ruined by this direct racial profiling.

It always pains me to write a negative review for a company that I'd earlier been happy with, but…read morethe utter lack of response through two different channels has given me no other avenue. BEWARE of hidden costs with this company. I'd made some costly purchases from SCN in past years, but I'd always transported my bushes and trees home myself and did the planting. This year, and with growing back issues, I'd decided to have the trees I purchased planted by the company. I purchased two different trees a few weeks apart, hoping to have them scheduled together. I spoke/dealt with two different employees and BOTH times, they explicitly told me the cost of planting and delivery were half the cost of the trees. Planting AND delivery. Both times I asked questions and both times they were told my address. Both times there were ample opportunities for transparency on any additional costs I could incur, but they were steadfast in telling me to expect half the cost of the trees. I waited seven weeks for them to reach me on their delivery schedule, but they did not confirm the day and time until TWENTY minutes before Jake was arriving at my home (he apologized that he forgot). I scrambled to rearrange my morning and had to cancel a work teams call. Jake was great and professional, however, when I went to write out my check, he quoted me an additional $100. When I told him this was entirely unexpected and I wasn't exactly happy about it, he didn't have much to say, staring at his feet and saying that sometimes 'they forget to tell customers' and it's 'based on many factors'. To clarify, we are a straight shot down the highway just a few exits from SCN. Depending on the route, we are 12-14 miles from them. That's it! If they wanted to upcharge for being out of a service radius, they could have been transparent, but they weren't- not to mention the fact that I have NEVER heard of such a short distance being out of a service radius. I have messaged them both through their Facebook portal and also directly to their sales department weeks ago and have heard NOTHING. A $100 gift card or credit for the erroneous upcharge would be a step to making this right, but they don't even respond. SCN has some nice inventory, but they are on the higher end with their pricing if you compare locally. With the added cost, I will have to seriously consider taking my business elsewhere.

I was a little worried that the selection would not be that great since it was a week before Halloween. There were so many to choose from-all different sizes and shapes and colors. We each were able to select the exact pumpkins necessary for carving. Scamman's is very family friendly with several corn mazes with one specifically for the little ones. Other activities, as well. Plenty of wagons to pull kids and pumpkins. Booths to purchase snacks and local wares. And, there was a musician providing live entertainment. There is plenty of parking. I recommend Scamman's without hesitation.

I went inside and explained "Im brand new to town and I asked some locals where to go for a lot of pumpkins. I understand that you folks had a bad barn fire here and this is probably the best place to spend my money to support you". The gentlemen (I did not get his name) said to me, "yes, and thank you very much for your support." (Direct quote). He sent me outside saying that each pumpkin was marked price...I went outside and started pricing them out. (Long time pro pumpkin carver and im getting these to just gift to my new neighbors, job, and local pub I love). So I ask if there's a wholesale option to pay by the pound, he tells me no, which is fine, not everyone haggles in the states. I inquire about the pumpkin patch next door and up the hill. He says "Oh, that's a completely different business". So I tell him I'm going out to price shop and pull up the hill to Scammans FARM, and learn they ARE different businesses and they are the ones who had suffered a major barn fire. I'm so put off by the lack of integrity at Scammans Home and Garden, that after telling him that I was there to support survivors of a fire and act like it was him, Is a pretty awful thing to do. Closed his eyes all dramatic and everything. In a time where we need to be lifting each other up...no shame. I won't ever return, or send anyone there. P.s. your pumpkins are WAY overpriced.
