5 stars and I'll tell ya why: Great atmosphere, top-quality spirits, friendly and knowledgeable staff, delicious food, fantastic music. Everything I look for in a place when I'm going out. The vaulted ceilings, chandelier, and dim lighting immediately set the mood when you walk in, whether you sit at the bar or at a table you'll be taken care of right away. The bartender, Winston, is well-versed in both cocktails and the history of every bottle on his shelf. Whether you order scotch, mezcal, or gin, he will fill you in on where the spirit is made, who owned it, and how it came to be. Every Friday and Saturday night there is great music starting around 9 and carrying your evening through until after midnight. The band is always rotating, fantastic, and fun. I recommend going out on a weekend, but there's never a wrong day to visit Tonic. Be sure to try the food too! They serve great food, and later than anywhere else downtown. I had the chicken and waffles for the first time last week and was blown away, cheers to their chef! Visiting Santa Fe for a week and the evening options are very limited. This is one of the few places open after 9:00 pm. But not if it isn't Sunday through Wednesday. Went on a Friday. Bar seating is "reserved for regulars", so we couldn't sit there even though it was half empty. Sat at a table. For a place that markets themselves as a cocktail bar, the cocktail list was very limited. Suppose they would make anything if asked but it's nice having a well developed curated cocktail list. He politely directed us to a waiting bar, brought us each a water and menu while offering to make us anything we'd like as long as they have the ingredients. He frequently checked on us prior to seating and promptly sat us at a table. He had exceptional knowledge of their abilities to make unique cocktails as well as how different liquors would suit various palettes. The decor is perfectly Art Deco and soothed the noise to a palatable level. The cocktails were delicious and perfect for each of our 4 person party. He even comped a drink for our military member. What a disappointment. Santa Fe is a bit of a ghost town after 9pm but I had hopes of something interesting from this location. The space was fairly barren except for a lovely chandelier hanging from the tall ceiling. Bar seats are reserved for "regulars" even though there are only a few seats there. Incase you don't wanna read this long really bad review, all in all this place has HORRIBLE SERVICE. Trendy aesthetics will only take you so far, you should focus on training your servers/ staff to have better hospitality. If I could give this place zero stars I would (yelp, help me out...) First of all we walk in and receive judgy stares from the bar tenders and servers. We all had never been here so we didn't know if we needed to be seated or not and we were waiting to at least be greeted but weren't. So we walked over to the only booth that "looks" like we could all fit in but we didn't. We got situated and at this point we are still being stared at and ignored, you have 6 people walk in your bar trying to buy 2-3 12$ drinks each on a dead night not including food why in the world would you not want to show any hospitality.... there was literally 2 couples in the bar so there is no reason why we weren't being acknowledged at this point. The server finally walks over and checks our ID's and this guy, A.K.A Mr. FBI agent, takes 10 minutes to look at all of our ID'S and to top it off I gave him my passport which he was convinced it was expired, then he realized he was looking at the wrong date and STILL asked for another form of ID. The vibe was just really off putting, he didn't even try to talk to us or even offer a food menu it just felt like they didn't want us there. After the server leaves to get us water me and my friend who were sitting facing the bar could see the server talking to someone else at the bar and making signs at our table and looking over which made us even more uncomfortable. We ended up just taking our business elsewhere because our experience within less than 20 minutes was horrible. It's like they didn't even try with their customer service like they could give two shits about our business. The manager ( probably the owner )walked behind us as we were leaving and asked what was wrong to which my friend said they had bad service and we got a simple "have a good night" not even trying to address or rectify the problem. Have you seen those "Karen restaurants" where staff are purposefully mean and it's funny? Tonic is like that, except you didn't know you would be berated and belittled by the bartender for asking reasonable questions and ordering standard drinks. I really try to only leave positive reviews because I know that one bad experience isn't always reflective of what a restaurant or bar can offer and owners/servers/staff deserve some grace, but with Tonic, I have tried so many times and every time it really is just terrible. Bartenders can be rightfully proud of their craft, but the guy here has consistently been beyond rude. For example, one time I asked what beers they had and he said they have beer but "they are really more of a craft cocktail bar" and he would only accept a cocktail order, but then a regular he knew by name came in and she was allowed by the gods to have a beer. Another time, a friend asked if she could get a Tito's on the rocks and the bartender simply replied "no." He didn't offer other options or explain why, just said no and stared at her with a condescending glare. My final attempt was with a few people and we were told we couldn't move tables around for us to sit together, which is no problem--happy to follow establishment rules, so we spread out. Before handing us the check the bartender told us to "never try this again" and when we asked what he meant he said to never bring a party of 8 in and that we stretched him far beyond capacity. It's a little confusing since we sat at open tables so they could've been taken by anyone, and we were respecting the rules/telling the bartender we could do checks in whatever way he preferred/happy to be patient with drinks, but he just was visibly annoyed and physically elbowed two of our male guests multiple times as he walked by. I am from Santa Fe and have a soft spot for the location from when the OG establishment was a safe place for plaza rats, and I so wanted to love it in its new and fancier form. But there are so many awesome bars downtown so PLEASE go support ANYWHERE ELSE. Go have a smoked sage margarita at Secreto just a hop and skip away, or an awesome margarita at the Coyote Cantina, or a delicious beer at desert dogs. Yesterday at 5:30 was the third attempt to have a cocktail with friends at Tonic. The Google listing says they open at 5 but they don't open till 530. Having said that at 5:30 a guy came out from the back outside area saying that they were not going to open until 6. There were a total of six of us standing outside in the cold and they turned us away. As I said this was the third time this has happened and in my book 3 strikes and you're out. The only other option besides secreto to have some really good craft cocktails is here. We went here twice because it's also one of the only few places that is open late and serves munchies. The place is small and really nice and.the chandelier is stunning and the fact that it's a jazzy/bluesy music place it helps and sets the ambiance. The drinks are really good very top notch. The food menu is.good and one of the best things we tried in our visit to Santa fe was the Brussel sprouts here they are sweet and sour with pine nuts and cheesy and words can't describe how good they are. Now the lack of stars is because of what other reviews say. The staff is kinda special lol. One bartender has a strong attitude that rubs people the wrong way. He ignores some poeple specially if you are not at the bar and constantly tells people to keep it down. The drinks are amazing, the atmosphere hip, but there are downsides. Service is variable - sometimes attentive, sometimes downright rude. Yes, Winston is a genius, but he's also the kind of snob who will shame you for asking for a classic drink that contains a product with corn syrup (they don't do nasty things like Roses or Coke products here and if you make the mistake of asking for such a thing they treat you like you've committed a war crime). The other BIG downside is Thursday jazz night. Wow, the band is great, but in such a small space you can't hear anything else, so don't come here expecting to have a conversation with anyone. read more

We walked into this place last night it was packed but were lucky enough to find a table. The service was slow but with there being only one waitress we understood, after my 3rd drink the waitress started questioning me on how i was going to get home. I was with my wife and another couple and we were staying fairly close at the loretto hotel. I told her we were going to take a lyft. She served us one more drink but were being watched like common criminals. I've only been here twice, but on the second visit, the bartender, Winston, remembered my drink order the moment I named my vodka of choice! One of my friends is very interested in Japanese whiskey. I've decided this is the most sophisticated hole-in-the-wall bar ever. Down a walk-way alley (near some excellent restaurants) one block off the square, Tonic doesn't exactly jump out at you. The surprise inside is a masterful recreation of an Art Deco theater complete with bold linear graphics and sparkling chandelier. The creative cocktail menu plus unusual wine list (loved the Slovenian rose) blend with standard offerings, complementing the comfortably chic scene. Tonic is not at all stuffy, with proprietor/bartender, Winston, mixing the magic while engaging in witty repartee. Another plus is that Tonic is open actual BAR HOURS, unlike so much of Santa Fe which tends to roll up the dusty carpets by 9:00 or so. At midnight we found ourselves still there, heads bobbing to a stellar, world-class jazz trio. Tonic is the best way to wind down after exploring the area -- stop in and stay late. read more
