We originally planned to hike in the National Park this day in early August but rain was predicted so we opted to get wet on a raft with Tongariro River Rafting in Turangi. We went to their place at noon (close to where we were staying). Their land man John had assembled our gear and Johnny who was to be our guide started explaining how to put on the fleeces, wetsuit, booties, gloves, cap, helmet, and life preserver. In the dressing rooms we put it all on over our bathing suits. Then it was a quick 20minute ride to where we were going to put in. All along the way whether in the van or on the water, they told us of the history culture nature of the area. But the fun was just beginning. Johnny gave us clear instructions on how to get into the raft and once on the water, we learned some commands and practiced a couple of strokes. Then we were off. 60 rapids! I was nervous at first but it became abundantly clear that Johnny knew the river extremely well and it was a blast. Not cold at all except my toes at the end. He shared his Maori history with us and all about what we were cruising through. It was beautiful and peaceful. Stopped for hot chocolate midway. John was waiting for us at the pick up and took us back to their shop for delicious hot soup. And after changing we were off to the thermal pools! Such a fantastic experience. They show you the pictures (~30) which they sell together by download. It was nice to see all of them together and would recommend buying if you can afford it. Altogether a great days fun. Truly nice guys, awesome river and 'no drama'. read more
