I recommend the Oseta's House, a delightful dish of scrambled egg with halloumi, tomato, and spinach... it really is to die for! If you live in Preston Park and haven't yet discovered it, it could well become your weekend treat as it became mine. It comprises a well stocked deli counter, organic dry goods shop and organic butcher. The butcher himself, aside from being the only vegetarian butcher I've ever heard of, is friendly, approachable and willing to discuss your culinary intentions. As a former vegetarian still fairly shy of cooking meat, he was an invaluable fount of information, particularly on which cuts to try, which I found a complete minefield at first. The deli also stocks a good variety of other organic goodies and allergy aware foods such as gluten free pasta. Their takeaway coffee is inexpensive and lovely and their almond croissants taste deliciously home-made, making the perfect Sunday morning treat to take over to the park. It's worth avoiding school lunch hour though, as it's understandably a popular choice with the pupils of Dorothy Stringer and gets absolutely packed out from 12.30 - 2pm. Catering to this rush of lunchtime business, they have introduced a small hot lunch menu which they do really well - organic burgers and pizza slices etc. If you brave the school rush, you too can gorge on junk food with a halo. Altogether, it's worth a visit, perhaps as an accessory to a day in Preston Park - it's a more enticing choice than fighting through the hordes at the cafe in the centre.

After a long walk from Brighton Marina to the Pier, and a lot of shopping in The Lanes, we were ready for an Afternoon Tea! This Tea Shop is in the heart of "The Lanes", a picturesque location amidst brightly coloured shops, cafes and restaurants, in narrow, winding alleyways that make for a unique shopping area. It was lucky we went in at 4.30pm... They close at 5pm, but we were welcomed in as one of the last guests before they announced they were closed. It also meant we not only got a table, but the place started clearing out before we'd finished, so we ended up being the last customers, which was nice. It's a cute, cozy little tea shop, pretty on the outside and inside, with pictures of Brighton on the walls and an eclectic mixture of teapots, milk jugs and cups. It had been many years since I'd last had a "cream tea" and this didn't disappoint. We ordered some fruit scones and some plain scones (both were yummy but I recommend the fruit ones - the raisins & sultanas are really plump and juicy!). We also tried our scones both ways - cream then jam (the Devon way), and jam then cream (the Cornish way)... I'd been brought up the Devon way, but discovered the Cornish way is actually more to my liking! Both were yummy! We didn't buy any cakes, but the cakes (as well as the scones) are made fresh daily and looked delicious. And I must say, the tea itself was fresh and superior quality - loose leaf English breakfast, rather than bagged, really makes a difference. Our server was very sweet and friendly, and then, at the end, since we were the last customers, the shop owner came out to talk to us, and was super friendly and welcoming... She asked where we were from (always fun, as I'm British, but my husband and daughter are American). Despite it being the end of her day, she didn't rush us out at all, and enjoyed chatting with us. This delightful small, walled garden is something of a hidden secret, situated at the north end of…read morePreston Park and adjacent to Preston Manor. The garden is laid out as a quadrant, and features a small formal pond, a laburnham archway and extensive formal beds and herbaceous borders. Although maintenance isn't quite what it might be (and herbaceous borders require a tremendous amount of maintenance in season) it's still a lovely place to wander, and there is a huge number of plants to admire. It's a good place to get inspiration for your own garden. Although parts of the garden walls date to the early 17th century, the garden was actually laid out in the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods. It is now planted as a 'Queen Anne' garden, typical of small 17th and 18th-century gardens. The south west corner includes a late 19th-century pet cemetery, wherein are interred 16 dogs and 4 cats, 3 of which were employed as 'mousers' by the local council. The most poignant memorial reads: 'In memory of dear Soot, who for nine years was our faithful friend and playfellow. He was cruelly poisoned and died in consequence on June 17th, 1884'. The garden was restored in 2001 with money from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

It does in fact look like a large, and perhaps a little scary, private house which opens up its ground floor to reveal a cafe. On clear days they couple who run the cafe set out plastic chairs and tables on terraces at the front and round the sides, so you can sit in the sun whilst the kids/dog play, or round the side in the shade. The interior of the cafe is not that pleasant to sit in as it is very sparingly decorated and quite cold and echoey but the cakes, ice-creams, hot beverages and sandwiches they sell are very yummy and welcome. The filter coffee is suprisingly good and strong, despite the horrible styrofoam cups (grr! buy recyclable paper!) and cheap. The ice-creams have kept many a child and parent happy and the cakes...well! I have returned over and over for the homemade cakes on offer- particularly the apricot or date flapjacks: sweet soft layers of fruit with crumbly buttery oats. So good! They also do a wicked lemon drizzle and a light Victoria sponge. The toilets are also open to all and very clean.

Luckily my flatmate recently introduced me to The Galley and I've never looked back. I LOVE this place. The range of bread and fillings is incredible and the pricing plan logical: The more fillings, the more you pay- a sandwich with 3/4 fillings will cost around £3.50. I always, without fail, go for the warm falafel and goats cheese wrap, loaded up with salad, pine nuts, olives and sweet chilli sauce- it's heavenly. The salad items and sauces come at no extra cost so don't hold back! There's always specials on the board, but you can get creative and combine any number of ingredients, including garlic mushrooms, spinach, and bacon, to name but a few. They also do sweet and savoury crepes, and they're not over-priced. On top of the endless culinary delights one can experience at the Galley, the woman who runs the place is absolutely lovely, and I feel genuinely happy to be supporting her business. The chicken was generously sliced and the bacon cooked to the appropriate degree, not too crispy and not at fatty.
