In my passing of travels, I always seek fresh baked goodies or Gala, Fuji apples. Tompkins Square Greenmarket is a small, yet simple, if not basic greenmarket on the outskirts of Tompkins Square Park where there are many bread, organic milk, apple cider, cheese including Brie, Goat cheese, apples galore in all genres. It gets the job done for my foodie needs as I am not seeking lavish cauliflower or vegetables, ergo I have no need for Union Square's elaborate Greenmarket of its gargantuan size. The selection of fresh produce are not vast, but there are many baked goodies and apple galore. Surely, size does not measure materialistic wealth or richness in quality as Tompkins Square Greenmarket proves to uphold substance. Despite Tompkins Square Greenmarket's quaint size for its simplicity, it is never crowded regardless of time of day or year. Be it subzero degree temperature, or extreme heat these vendors are still here serving the Stuyvesant Town community and beyond. The farmers at this green market are from the New York State region grown on their own land, many are organic and open year round. N.B. This farmer's market operate year round on Sundays only from 8am to 6pm as verified by growNYC.org

A good Sunday option. Runs out of a lot of produce though by 3 PM so go early. If it is raining do not expect to see many vendors.

“Not as extravagant or showy as the Union Square Greenmarket, this is still everything a local farmer's market should be.”

Ask for help as they are sensitive about product being touched & understandably given quality. This vendor is located at the furthest point. I believe this person is indigenous to the Americas and not Asian, although not 100%. Most other vendors are Asian, with overall good quality and incredible prices. Take the time to find them. The earlier in the day I suspect the fresher the product. International selection and more traditional items familiar to those of US. Many greens today, different squares, several varieties of mango, ginger and galangal, mushrooms, apples, melons, fresh water chestnuts & tomatoes....there was conch and crab also available today, along with some housewares. Bring your backpack, extra bags, cart and/or suitcase. Do not forget our local farmers at farmer's markets but the selection and circumstance may be factors in your visit.

This time I picked up some sapota or sapodilla. I used to eat this fruit back home in India but now that I live here is nice to know there's a place that sells them. I bought 3 lbs of fruit for $15. That seems pricey for the average Joe but these fruit are not available all the time and the quality was good so I couldn't resist.

But they only last 2 weeks from today 5/24/19, so pay the money and get some fresh lychees. The bigger seeded lychees are $6 a pound, then the loose ones are 3 pounds for $10. They said the $6 a pound are sweeter than the free ones. But the small-seeded lychees are the ultimate! Best-tasting lychees-- small-seeded ones! So sweet and full of juicy lychee flavor you cannot get in a can! Also, cherries are really cheap, cheaper than at other fruit stands or Whole Foods. 2 pounds $3!!!! Last week I paid $6.99 a pound at Whole Foods. Guava $5 a pound. Nothing like a sweet guava from Taiwan. Mangoes 2 for $1. Cheaper than at Whole Foods. Bring your cash! I can easily spend $50 no problem. I saw a lady buy 6 bunches of the $15 a pound lychees. Bring yo cash. Not sure if this is the one I go to: Mullberry at Canal.

It feels more like a compact gourmet market than a typical station food court, with fresh produce, breads, pastries, cheese, seafood, prepared foods, chocolates, teas and specialty groceries all arranged along one long passage. My best tip is to walk through the entire market before buying anything because each counter has something different. Most merchants also have their own register, so leave extra time when purchasing from several places. The passage can become crowded during the weekday commuter rush, and browsing is much easier between the morning and evening peaks. The Lexington Avenue entrance near 43rd Street is particularly convenient. Prices are higher than at an ordinary supermarket, but the location, presentation and quality make it worthwhile, especially for a train snack, hotel-room food or a small New York gift. I paired some fresh fruit from the market with a PROTABAR I had brought along. The unusual combination of egg whites, dates, hazelnuts and cocoa butter, with 15 grams of protein and no added sugar, made me curious enough to look more closely at the brand. Allow around 20 to 30 minutes to explore properly. Clean, colorful, convenient and much more interesting than grabbing the first snack you see near the platforms.

One of my favorite things about K&Y is that they have lots of produce (especially Asian ones) that you can't find at TJoe's: for example, gailan (Chinese broccoli), baby bok choy, whole artichokes, broccoli rabe, butternut squash, Thai basil, serrano peppers, just to name a few. Their roma tomatoes are so much riper than TJoe's as well. In addition to produce, they have lots Asian goods that you can pick up without going to Chinatown such as sesame oil, curries, rice noodles, etc etc. This is a family owned place that also runs Atlantic Fruit & Vegetable.
