Parkwood Day School

Parkwood Day School

It's been four years and time for an update. I'm so happy to share that my opinion of Parkwood has…read moreonly grown since I wrote that first review in 2022. We had a rocky start with our oldest daughter as being born during covid made for a harder transition to daycare. That being said, Parkwood worked with her and by the time she was into their preschool program she was thriving and had a strong community of kids and teachers at her disposal. By the time she "graduated" from pre-k last year we had met most of the staff and were really thrilled with everything about our experience from the extremely low turnover of staff, to the approachability of the program director, to the dedication of the founder who is still very much involved. Our daughter left Parkwood being able to write her name, read a few words, and even knowing some spanish and yoga. Nowadays, our 14 month old goes here and at this point it very much feels like we are part of a bigger community as we know many of the other families that also send their kids here, and we know the staff really well. Parkwood is now located in Overland Park at Indian Heights United Methodist Church and while it's been a while waiting on the new addition - they are working on a standalone building that will serve as their primary care center here, which I think will be wonderful once it's completed. I won't sugarcoat the price as it isn't cheap to send kids here, but it isn't the MOST expensive in town either. I find that Parkwood Day School does a good job of keeping costs as low as they can while also maintaining a safe, clean, and educational environment for all the kids that attend. All this to say, I feel really lucky to have found this school and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a good daycare/preschool to send their little ones to.

Our 5-month-old daughter attends Parkwood Day School and we could not be happier. They support researched-based developmental learning for children 6 weeks to 6 years old and also have therapists (PT, OT, and speech) on site to conduct regular screenings to determine if your child needs additional developmental support/IEP. As a speech therapist myself, I was pleased to see therapy services are offered because they were not at several other places we toured. They just recently started using an app that logs your child's nap times, feeding times/amount, and potty. The thing my husband and I love is they upload pictures throughout the day and describe what activity your child is working on and what developmental skill it targets (fine motor, gross motor, eye-hand coordination, sitting core strength, language, etc). The staff is friendly, quick to respond, and our daughter is always happy upon drop-off and pick-up. Highly recommend Parkwood.

Former Mayor Sly James sent his kids to Barstow before. Current KC Mayor Quinton Lucas is an alum. Innovation: The headmaster at Barstow is a brilliant, innovative leader. Barstow is opening up its second campus with ambitious goals to turn it into one of the country's foremost STEAM and innovation campus. Barstow has international campuses in Asia that provide additional revenue stream. Barstow also has some amazing online programs that are in collaboration with 100 other schools in the world. Curriculum: English/Social Studies: Barstow is one and half to two years ahead of Blue Valley curriculum. I have actually compare the reading lists from Barstow to Blue Valley and other private schools. The book list at Barstow is the most multi-dimensional and diverse. At KU, it's a well known fact that Barstow students need to correct other students' papers in a group project. Math: Barstow's math curriculum is one year ahead of Blue Valley's curriculum. Math is very strong at Barstow. Barstow students tend to win many of the regional, state, and some national math competitions from elementary school to high school in Missouri. Science: We are not a family of doctors. I hear from doctors' families complaining about our science. My kids have been happy with science at Barstow. My sense is that the science is not bad, but just not as amazing as other academic areas. If science is so bad, then why would many of the top doctors in KC send their kids here? STEAM: Barstow STEAM classes and robotics team are very strong starting in middle school and all the way to high school. Robotics team won an impressive 3rd place in the national robotics competition last year. It's a major force in high school. There's also STEAM curriculum in elementary school. It's stronger than other elementary schools in the area, but I would like to see more. AP Computer is offered this year for the first time. It's the first school to offer that course in the area. Debate/Speech: Barstow, Pembroke, and Blue Valley North are all strong in debate. Barstow is the leader in debate. The students travel everywhere to compete. It's a heavy load for the students but they always come home with amazing results. Barstow is strong in speech. Broadcasting: Barstow has a professional broadcasting studio that no one else has (thanks to a generous donation by a Barstow family). Students produce, create, record TV shows for the school community almost on a daily basis. Film-making is strong here. Art: Huge selection of electives are offered in middle school and high school in art. Theatre: Barstow has an excellent theatre program and produces several big shows a year. The shows are excellent but do require long hours of rehearsal. Volunteerism: Strong volunteerism culture at Barstow. Kids are taught not to be selfish. Several Congressional Award Gold and Silver winners every year. We have the most out of all KS and MO schools. Test Prep: Barstow doesn't push the kids on test prep or applying to Ivy schools like Pembroke does. Test prep is stronger at Pembroke and Blue Valley, and minimal at Barstow. Teachers: We have been here for three years. We never had a bad teacher at Barstow. Do we have average teachers? Yes, we had one average teacher in all of middle school, and one average teacher in high school so far but everyone else has been excellent to amazing. 5th grade team is also strong at Barstow. My kids didn't get educated earlier so I can't say about the teachers for the younger grades. However, from time to time, if we do get a bad teacher, that teacher is out after one year. The parents tend to revolt and that teacher is gone right away. Final thought: I am grateful that my kids found a school that offers amazing education and teach them how to be wonderful and useful human beings in the society!

One of the last junior classes I worked with had 40 students. As you are going to find at most elite private schools, there are a ton of students who love to learn and are dedicated to hard work. It doesn't hurt that it's a beautiful campus, conveniently located, with a good deal of tradition. Scott Hill, head counselor here, also happens to be awesome.

Their facility is clean, secure, the staff is friendly and they teach the kids great foundational Christian principles. My girls started there at 6 weeks old and we have been there for 10 years. They are so reliable. They love on all of the kids like family. They are very organized and have a great curriculum. In fact, my daughters were reading by age 3 because of their great education. When my kids turned 5, they graduated from the program, however, we continue to enroll them in the summer program. I can not thank Grow In Peace enough for what they have been/and are for my family. My kids have tons of pictures (wonderful memories) because the teachers take them and put together photo books to keep. This is definitely a place you can trust. My kids have always been clean, felt safe and learned educationally and spritually because of this place helping to give them a great foundation. Because of my great experience, I've referred several people to this place and they have glowing experiences as well ;) THANK YOU so much for everything, grow in peace!

My child was threatened by the staff member there that the police were going to take her and myself away. After the situation they kept the staff member on schedule and put her in a room with my younger child where he came to me telling me she had treated him differently. The parent (who lost her ring) later found her ring locked securely in her home in their safe... after having a private investigator follow me and accusing my then 7 year old of being a thief in front of the entire school No apology was ever issued to me or my child after she was embarrassed by the school. My child unfortunately has not forgotten this incident and how they made her feel. We were instructed to not mention this incident to anyone by the pastor of the church and the director. Other parents with concerns were also hushed about their experience here. Some of their school age instructors have very little patience and are not watchful of the kids. Sitting in a corner yelling at the kids is not engaging with them.
