Tombstone. Stompin' ground of Wyatt Earp & Co. Attended a re-enactment of a gunfight, with "Wyatt Earp", "Doc Holliday" and the gang. It is a tourist attraction to be sure, but not cheesy in the least. The dusty streets, the different businesses along the road plunges you right into the American Wild West - guns ablazing, the whole nine yards. Even the smell of horse manure. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
I've been here three times since we mived here in Arizona. And my husband loves showing this place to our guests. So much history lies here. Lots of interesting shops that hold the treasure from the past. They also have Gun fight show at OK Coral. If you like ghost tours, they have that as well. So much to see, kid and pet friendly. Not a lot of restaurants to choose from, but there's a few.
Don't come at me folks, but as a lover of all things History, ghost town etc Tombstone left me feeling like a giant money grab. While a few of the actual buildings are still standing most of the area youre seeing is just plain fake and redone. Lots of souvenir shops and actors walking the streets. Some of the shows are fun, but our family was in and out in what felt like an hour. I was bummed. I'd always wanted to come here and I left so disappointed. I'd say the court house, and the birdcage theatre are worth checking out. If you like reenactments and massive crowds Tombstone is for you.
Arizona 01-2024 Tony and I went to Tombstone Arizona and it was like walking back into time. I felt like I was in a Clint Eastwood western. I felt the wind on my face, the sun shining down, heard the clip clip sounds of shoes on the wooden sidewalks and smelled the dusty sand of the streets as it blew around...only thing missing was a tumble weed blowing across the street, a few horses tied at the watering daughts, and the cheezy Spaghetti western music ....you know the one I'm talking about!!! With the duud-da-da-da dah!! Trailing sound with Mexican horns...lol I absolutely loved visiting this town. It has a lazy laid back Hippie vipe with a bit of tourista tweak to it!! I could live here...I could handle it. If you're in the area, go there! Enjoy it. It's the closest you may ever get to the real past Wild Wild West...but don't fall for the cheesy tourista stuff...don't pay the extra dollars, find your own path...but travel it
Lots of photo ops with employees dressed in cowboy get ups and building with the names Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and OK Corral. Several stagecoaches passed buy taking visitors for a ride for a fee. Saw a trolley too. If you're a Wild West fan you can see a gun fight at a saloon or another show in a different building. The hawker repeats come see the next show, come grab a sasparilla. Encompasses a few streets with shops selling Stetson hats, knives, hand guns and western attire. I bought a copper bracelet, a pair of coyote earrings and a pin. A man asked if he could sit with me on a bench. At first I thought he could be a part of the stagecoach gang. He kept saying he was heading to the saloon to get drunk. Soon I realized the alcohol on his breath and was waiting for him to ask me for a couple of dollars. Luckily Doc and hubs were approaching in the distance so I wished him a good day and swiftly removed myself from this fellow.
The town too tough to die. I still remember my first visit here. My girlfriend in college surprised me with a trip here on my 21st birthday and I had my first legal drink at Big Nose Kate's Saloon. Tombstone is pretty touristy today because of all the movies that have been made about it, But the one that came out in 1993 is the one that made this place popular. I've always enjoyed the history behind this town and the Wild West stories that have been told through movies and books. There is a lot to do in Tombstone. Just know that most of the attractions will cost you a little money. There are also a number of restaurants and saloons you can visit if you are hungry or just want a drink. Even though most of the original buildings were destroyed by fire, many were rebuilt. Tombstone boomed in the late 1800's because of silver, The gunfight at the O.K. Corral in 1881 put this town on the map and you can see actors reenact the gunfight at the original location. Big Nose Kate's Saloon and Crystal Palace are popular places for drinks and food. The Bird Cage Theatre, Cochise County Courthouse, and Boothill Cemetery are other historic spots that you can visit that remain almost unchanged. For lodging, the Tombstone Grand Hotel is a hotel many visitors stay at because of how close it is to everything. I used to make a lot of trips here back in the day. It's a little too packed for my taste these days. But I occasionally will stop in for lunch or a drink if I am in the southeast AZ area on a road trip. There are a few places you can dine at that are away from the downtown area. Plan on parking a few blocks from the main road (Allen St) as spots fill up the closer you get to the main attractions. If you have never been, I definitely recommend checking this place at least once in your life. Especially if you are a fan of western movies.
We are deep in the Southwest here. When people talk about the Wild West, they're talking about towns like Tombstone. Originally founded in 1877 by a silver prospector, the town grew significantly as more silver was extracted from local mines in what turned out to be the largest productive silver district in Arizona. The population went from around 1000 to around 14,000 in less than seven years in the 1880s. The city is world renowned for the historic gunfight between the Earp Brothers and The Cowboys including Ike and Billy Clanton, Frank and Tom McLaury, and Billy Claiborne. The shootout took place on October 26, 1881 and is reenacted daily at the O.K. Corral. I was here quite early in the morning, before the shuffling feet kicked up too much of the dust. It's a nice town to walk through with a number of historic markers to read and many different shops with local stuff for sale including antiques and mementoes. This place is interesting. Has that old west feel. A nice little western town in the middle of nowhere. We did the shoot out show. I bought a cowboy hat and leather holster for one of my handguns...Fairly priced and a nice place to just feel WESTERN. A good place to visit and seriously more exciting and more of a tourist spot for me compared to Grand Canyon (which we also visited on this trip) which was a rip off and honestly boring. If you could do one...This is way better than seeing a hole in the ground.
Getting ready for a taste of history. We made the 2.5-hour trip to Tombstone for the day. The experience takes you back in time and allows you to envision how it once was. There are many shops and activities, even a staged gunfight (selected times, so check before you go or you will miss it), and many historic buildings with a story. Parking could have been better, so be prepared to walk. A little dusty and dirty. The ride to Tombstone was just as interesting as Tombstone itself. You go through several small towns (drive in and out). I would not want to take the drive at night, but for a day trip, it was fine.
If you've watched any western movie and had any sense of fascination in the environment/setting, a visit to the historic town of Tombstone, Arizona is in order. It's about an hour and fifteen minutes to 2 hours outside of Tucson depending on where in Tucson you originate. There's quite a bit of real history in Tombstone, dating back to the mining days, when there was a lot of money to be made or taken, which resulted in quite a bit of crime and lawlessness...the foundation for any western movie where you see a gunfight. Although I don't know the detailed history of that time, the likes of Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp were among the notable locals that roamed these streets. There's about 3-4 main blocks in the heart of town built up like the old west, and they're pedestrian only so you can get a feel for the place, including stagecoaches and cowboys dressed up roaming around. There's a couple of saloons and restaurants, and also both a coffee and candy shop. There's shops aplenty to see you touristy western gear and souvenirs, and there's various places to tour like the Bird Cage Theatre and the OK Corral. All in all, the architecture is great and it's a fun place to roam around for a bit, and even take on a gunfight if that's your interest. The locals and shop owners were incredibly friendly, and a band had set up to play music for visitors. Most of the structures on the main street are recreations, as much of the town was lost in various fires, but the Bird Cage Theatre is an original building dating back to the 1800s, and is said to be haunted (or so I was told). I can't say that I've ever been to a town quite like Tombstone before, and probably never will again, but it was a fun and unique experience to check off the bucket list, and I'm sure it'll be a nice story to tell anyone who is interested in the old west. The town is really well done and I recommend a visit to anybody remotely interested in the western genre, as a side trip when visiting Tucson.
While we were in the area visiting relatives, we decided to venture out to Tombstone. A few hints we'd like to share: - We bought tickets for events online a day or two beforehand, and planned them for the earliest available times. To get them out of the way and of course so we wouldn't be caught in that mid-afternoon heat. - We packed lots of water and related drinks, a lunch and yes sun screen and dressed appropriately. "When in Tombstone..." (Or is it Rome?). Well, you get the idea. - Also made a budget for what we allowed ourselves to spend as not to go haywire on things (I did get my stickers and magnets though). Overall, as a day trip it turned out pretty good. Our kids are aged 12-19 and they seemed interested and proactive; not into the Tombstone movies or anything but yeah, I do believe a good time was had. Arriving earlier before anything was really opened was nice for window shopping. Recommendations? The Rose Bush Museum with the world's largest rose bush. For a small entrance fee you get to see it and a brief history of western life from various artifacts. In my opinion it was worth it.
Tombstone and ok corral is so famous, most everyone knows about this place. I often got asked from out of town visitors about his place but I couldn't say anything as I never visited before. Since I was visited Kartchner caverns, it was just ideal time to visit as drive was only 30 mins. Unless you are really into the western movie, or first time visiting Arizona, there wasn't much wow factor from someone from Phoenix. I almost felt sad for them. Thus being said, still a good place to visit for about a few hours if you like western movies and are visiting from out of Arizona. They do good job maintaining character from old west time. read more

We went to Tombstone early on a Friday morning before a majority of the stores opened. There was plenty of parking because we arrived so early. If you have ever been to Knott's Berry Farm, I'd say it is the same type of old western town/vibes. There are lots of antique and souvenir shops. There are a few places to eat. There are historical buildings/attractions such as the Bird Cage Theatre, O.K. Corral, and the Good Enough Mine. There are some stagecoach rides you can take down the main street. Boothill graveyard is down the street that you drive in on a short distance away and has some famous grave sites. read more

Tourism is the oxygen that keeps Tombstone alive. Were it not for the infamous shootout at the OK Corral that made this town notorious, it would be a ghost town by now, just a few weathered buildings and broken monuments in the cemetery. Only ghost hunters would come here, hoping for a view of the past seen through the eyes of a disembodied spirit. Instead, Tombstone's economy is geared for thousands of tourists coming from all over the world, seeking a bit of Old West history. If any spirit residue was left by the Clancy or McLaury brothers, it's been chased away by the relentless onslaught of tourism. We came in April. The temperature was very pleasant. I imagine it's got to be god-awful hot in the summer, which my cousin confirmed. When you're driving to Tombstone, you see an awful lot of desert, and very little habitation. It must've been hellacious for 19th century women wearing corsets and layers and layers of clothes. We arrived in Tombstone around 10am on a Tuesday, and the town was already busy. There were people everywhere, and, as the day progressed, it got busier. I was surprised that so many people visited on a Tuesday. The weekends must be insanely crowded. My Tucson-based cousin hadn't visited in 20 years. Her first comment was, "they're charging for everything!" She was right. After walking around the town, I was surprised we didn't get charge a toll for using the sidewalks. She said, in the past, the only charges were at the OK Corral. Not anymore! Prepare to pay for everything. At places like the OK Corral, there are different attractions within the main gate, so you can pay twice or three times before you've seen everything a single attraction has to offer. Nearby parking was already tight by the time we arrived. Maybe there are some more distant parking lots, but I didn't see them. Prepare to walk - a lot. The main street is closed to traffic, which makes a lot of sense. Again, there are a lot of people wandering here. As is common with tourist towns, you'll find lots of restaurants, bars, T-shirt shops, and little bits of junk. Postcards. Thimbles. Shot glasses. Guns (fake, but look real). Mustaches. Hats. Keychains. Refrigerator magnets. I saw a couple photography studios where you can wear 1880's style clothing and have your picture taken. If you want junk to commemorate your visit, Tombstone really is a motherlode. I'm glad we visited, but, if I had my choice, I wouldn't do it again as a day trip. I'd like to spend a night there, see what it's like when the hordes go home and you're left with just a few people. Maybe stay at a B&B and then, step outside at 2:00am to see the Milky Way spread across the sky. That would be cool. That's when the ghosts would appear. read more
Tombstone Arizona the town too tough to die. We went first thing Thursday morning. Practically had the whole place to ourselves. Not a lot of people there. We went to the gunfight $10 included tickets for a couple other things around town. Really neat town. Lots of shops with cowboy n done Indian souvenirs. Would be great for families. read more
I was expecting a Virginia City experience but got greeted by this town that's bustling with people adorned in Western wear trying to relive the Old Wild West. There are trolleys and horse carriages along with the Western theme. There are gun shows and ghost themed tours. Saloons and western stores abound- not really sure if there are things to do for kids except to eat. I guess the hardest thing is to figure out how we, as tourists ended up wasting our day I in this very kitschy town when there are so many things to do and see in Tucson. Ah, yes! The name Tombstone rings a bell because of Wyatt Earp and the hype of the movie named after the town itself. Anyways, IMHO it's really not worth visiting unless you have lots of time to kill. The museum looks like it would have been cool but it was closed when we got there. read more
This a must see if and when you are in the SE Arizona; hour and a half from Tucson and three hours from Phx's south side. Take the trolley or stage coach tours; reasonably priced, ask for seniors rate. The last trips of the day are the best. The myths have some history and a little truth in there and a lot of embellishment to say the least. Warning you are at 4600 foot above sea level, so it cool in winter, you may see snow flurries and if the wind is blowing it's cold. In summer it's may get a little over 100, but not like Phx's hot. 2 hint; make it a day trip as there is not many motels, much less brand hotels, in short no Marriott's The days of Wyatt & Earp Bro., Doc Holiday, Big Nose Kate, China Mary still linger on with the sites of OK Corral, Boot Hill, Wyatt's house. read more
A step back in time... This is my first time to visit Tombstone and it has been on our list of places to see. Both hubby and I had a great time experiencing walking where it all happened at the O.K. Corral. No, this isn't Hollywood... this is the real deal where Town Marshal Virgil Earp and Assistant Town Marshal Morgan Earp were wounded, where Doc Holliday was grazed, and where Cowboys Tom and Frank McLaury and Billy Clanton were killed. Wyatt Earp came out unharmed. The gunfight at the OK Corral only took 30-seconds between the outlaws and lawmen. Love the history of this place. Actors dressed in the 1880's era and cast of the reenactment shows would come out before each scheduled show times trying to get audience to watch Wyatt Earp's famous Tombstone gunfight, which is one of the attractions found here. Another one is historic gunfight shows at the Saloon Theatre and Gunfight Palace, mine or underground tour (tour Tombstones first mines used in the 1880's), visit the Courthouse State Historic Park and the many museums around, or ride a stagecoach or wagon to experience Old Tombstone historical tours. There's plenty of things to do here and there is no shortage of food places! I have to include that many of the attractions/shows/horse rides charge a fee to watch or tour the attractions, including the museums... and don't forget to tip your actors after the show performances :) I'm sure there are a lot of ghost stories, tales and legends in Tombstone... This is the real Tombstone. Hollywood transformed this Western boom and bust town into a larger than life setting, but the reality of visiting Tombstone may be somewhat disappointing. This town is still an active town in Southern Arizona about one hour south of Tucson in the high Sonoran Desert. Most of the activity is on the weekends and during tourist seasons, but many businesses and attractions are open year round. I have visited Tombstone several times in my life after living in Arizona for nearly two decades. The town itself has seen better days, although the main activities are centered on Allen Street. There is the O.K. Corral and Bird Cage Theatre. Boothill and the old courthouse provide a full circle of the law and lawless in the area. Several souvenir and Western shops line the street along with several old timey restaurants and saloons. There are gunfights and people dressed in costume along with the mine tour and several areas, but after visiting many other old west towns across Arizona and the greater west, Tombstone is just lacking a lot of the charm and nostalgia of those other places. It is rather difficult to access being in the southern part of Arizona, far from the regular beats. It does remain a fun option when you are in the area. Including Tombstone into your Arizona journey is a tough choice. The surrounding areas of Patagonia, Wilcox, and caves offer more bang for the buck, and other places like Jerome or Sedona are more accessible for most people. It is a medium drive from Tucson with lots of free parking and the opportunity to pass through a Border Patrol checkpoint! read more
You'll learn that Tombstone is known for being "the town too tough to die." I didn't know what to expect or if there'd be anything to do...but I was pleasantly surprised. The heart of it all is about 4 blocks worth of sights to see, shops and restaurants, and entertainment and photos. I paid $10 at the sight of the OK Corral Gunfight. This was what most visitors were doing. And for $10, I believe it's roughly every hour, they do a reenactment of the gunfight between Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and the lawbreakers. I found the reenactment (roughly a half hour) to be very entertaining. You also get to see a 20 minute film of Tombstone along with a copy about the fight from the Tombstone Epitaph. The Streets of Tombstone are vintage western along with the shops. You can also do activities like dig for gold or see other versions of gunfights. A nice place to eat was Big Nose Kates Saloon. They had a variety of things on their menu along with a cool atmosphere. I got pizza, which I enjoyed. For half a day, Tombstone was a great town to visit. I felt like I took a trip back in time to the old west. read more

Loved visiting this old ghost town. We did the Bird Cage Theater, we did the underground mine tour, we watched a fun fight, we drank whisky at an old bar at like 11:00 AM and last but not least we did the van tour around the city. We highly recommend visiting Tombstone. read more

This is TOMBSTONE !!!! ***THE TOMBSTONE *** . - Is it touristy? Yeah, duh. Do the locals sell all sorts of Tombstone tourist trinkets? Of course! What else are they supposed to do? Point is, this is not a theme park manufactured and disguised as an old far west town... this is THE ONE AND ONLY TOMBSTONE. Certainly the most iconic of all far west towns. The O.K Corral, it is HERE. Boot Hill... it is here, and those that died in the famous gunfight are buried HERE. You can go into the courthouse that Wyatt Earp was tried in for that gunfight. You can see what was once the saloon where he ran tables, or where Doc Holliday really dealt cards. You can stand in the spot where Morgan Earp was gunned down. Walk the streets Johnny Ringo and Curly Bill, and Indian Charlie tormented a town. You can walk down into the most productive silver mine in American history, and you can ride a stage coach down the dusty Allen Street. You can visit the original Bird Cage Theatre and see the actual history of this amazing town that defines old West history. And the locals... so many of them in character, that it all gets brought to life. So is it touristy? Yeah, it is. But while I am not a huge cowboy movie fan, I grew up AWAYS knowing of these iconic places and events, and I truly felt like a 10 year old kid again. We spent 2 solid days there, and I still wanna go back! read more

If you want to visit a historic old west town that is as fairly authentic as it can be then you need to visit Tombstone. Many of the original structures were destroyed in a fire back in the 1800's but, many were also rebuilt. The only building that remains original as it was in the 1800's is the Bird Cage Theatre. There are ample free parking spaces around the main street but, you should park as soon as you see an open one as they fill us fast as the day goes on. make sure you have time to walk up and down both sides of the main boardwalk. The businesses do their best to recreate what it was like back in the day. You'll see men and women dressed up in old west attire, guns, boots, spurs and hats walking up and down the street. You'll see Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and the gang re-enact the shootout at the OK Corral. It's all pretty well done. As you stroll the street duck into the shops. There are so many things to see, some overpriced, some reasonable. Have a Ruben for lunch at Big Nose Kate's and go to the Bird Cage Theatre. The information and history there is incredible. It's fun to look around to find that little piece of Tombstone to take home for the memories. Yeah, it's touristy but so what. Just have fun. read more

Great tourist destination! The main destination which is the strip of historic buildings felt like a movie set. The cool thing about the buildings are originals and well maintained. When walking around the historical site; there are souvenir shops, art galleries, and western wear stores. Also, there are confectionary shops and restaurants. Inside the stores, when you step inside; you can hear the wood floor creaking and follow as you walk around. You can feel the age of the building. Lastly, I enjoyed walking on the wooden walkways, observing the architecture of the buildings and learning about the history of the town. I wish there is more historical information about Native Americans, Chinese immigrants, and Mexicans who worked in the mines. You know the ethnic people who developed the mining town of Tombstone. I'll end this review with a phrase, "history is written by victors, not the defeated". read more

Historic Tombstone is a bit different than I thought it would be. For true history, swing by the court house. Almost everything on the main drive has been converted into a gift shop of diner. read more

I've ignored the cries of this place being a tourist trap and I was not disappointed by my experiences in Tombstone. The "town too tough to die" is filled with history even in its dust. Wyatt and Virgil Earp, along with Doc Holliday, look-alikes wander about like a Disneyland for western enthusiasts. A friend warned to get tickets early for the O.K. Corral shoot-out reenactment as it tends to sell out fast. We heeded her tip and got ours within moments of getting into town, snagging the two of the last five tickets for the show we planned to see. For $12, you get to see the reenactment, the official site of the O.K. Corral gunfight, a moving diorama with narration by the late Vincent Price, and a copy of the Tombstone Epitaph reporting of the famous shoot-out. Definitely get yourself a drink at Big Nose Kate's, and at least once in your life check out the Birdcage Theater. By the end of the day, you'd wish you had your own handlebar mustache and Colt Peacemaker. read more

Fun tourist attraction town about a half hour off the 10 and a great diversion to the long drives with nothing but desert to look at on a road trip. There are plenty of places to eat and buy crap at along with museums and points of historical interest to check out. read more
Tombstone is A-OK for me, fun and worth a trip for sure. Just the drive there was entertaining...and by entertaining I mean, terrifying. We passed a lot of scary looking gun shops next to candy shops and RV Parks which we made me nervous for what we were about to encounter. We got there early and there was no one there, it looked totally deserted, again, I was a little scared. I made my BF park next to a police, that made me feel better. We immediately found the OK CORRAL to purchase tickets for the show early (thanks fellow yelper Christine A). Your show tickets also come with access to their little museum, the diorama show and a free Tombstone newspaper. I would SKIP the historian talk (an entire hour of standing) and the diorama...unless you have a lot of time to kill. But the 45 min reenactment was neat. Aside from the OK Corral, which is easily the biggest draw, there a ton of shops with sweatshirts, shot glasses, jewelry, that sort of thing. There are also 3, yes 3, shops where you can take "Old Time" photos, which I love. We took ours at MADAME MUSTACHE, what a fun place, esp for costume lovers. We had a snack at Vogans bc it was the only place without a wait and we quickly learned why, AVOID this place! It was more terrifying than the drive in. I won't get into details here but again, avoid it. Later we ate again at BIG NOSE KATE'S, food was typically but the people watching, oh the people watching! Sometimes you weren't sure if they were actors, one of the many locals dresses up in Western garb, or just crazies....well, I think they might all be a little crazy. Worth a drink and a visit in any case. BTW, you can't bring in water bottles, ours got confiscated with the threat of a $50 fine....guns = ok, healthy, hydrating water= no way..go figure. We also part took in the fun at the SHOOTING GALLERY run by a nice couple and Chinese lady that was super friendly ans excited about helping us. For $3 you get 6 shots off a real gun and paint balls, worth the 3 bucks, I had a ball. In summary, its an experience for sure. Worth a trip but I dont think I would go back. Glad I saw it though. Drinks help. read more

Allen Street is where it happens. Plenty of shops and eateries. Just being around the historical buildings make the Old West more real because it's not some Universal Studios backdrop. Real people with a history of gunfights. If you're against guns, this place is not for you. You will hear the occasional gunshots as part of the tourist attraction. Otherwise, good history education for kids. read more
Near the southern end of Arizona sits Tombstone, a historic town of the Old West. Once it was a town of miners during the Gold Rush. It was the site of the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral. It has been a town of lore in books, television, movies, plays, and songs. Nowadays, it seems it is a town built for tourists. One thing to do is see the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The show itself is fun. It isn't totally historically accurate as far as who exactly dies, lives, and gets wounded, but it's a fun way to spend an hour or so in Tombstone. All the actors end up meeting and greeting down at Big Nose Kate's Saloon down the street after the show. Big Nose Kate's is a cool place. It's nicely decorated with faux stained glass windows, funny signs, and memorabilia of days in the Old West. They have a keyboardist during the day that sings country songs and a full band that plays at night. There are also a at least three places you can go to have your photo taken old-style wearing Old West garb, a bunch of shops for clothing and gifts, The Birdcage Theater which is one of the only buildings remaining exactly as it was in Tombstone, and a lot more. it's a fun place to spend the day, and there is a bed & breakfast if you'd like to spend the night. read more

This is the site of the famous OK Corral gunfight, home to Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday (I love the Val Kilmer version, but you know what I mean) This were people came through for the gold rush. A town a very little law, and a whole lot of testosterone! I loved it! As you walk through the town and pick through the touristy part of it, you get a real sense of history. The town itself was burnt to the ground a couple of times, but was rebuilt. Everything from the Saloons, to the pharmacy to the Bird Cage theater has a sense of history and pride to it. A little out of the town is Boothill cemetery where unknowns were buried as well as Cowboy Bill and the Tombstone's have some really cool sayings on it. Don't get sucked into the Helldorado show, it's lame (I got sucked into the show) but if you are a tourist it is entertaining for about 5 minutes. Go to Big Nose Kate's for a drink and see all the "bar keep" in interesting attire. It really is a great place to see! read more
