Hard one to rate.... I would have LOVED to give 5 stars to this place. Lots of regulars go here…read more Also one of my colleagues highly vouched for it and that is why I went. He goes there weekly with his girlfriend. So, why my doubts, lets start with the bad: - relative small portions for the price, especially from the outside it looks like a cheaper place. starters are 5.95 and mains are 9.95 or 14.95 and then you add 2.95 for rice. - the place was cold, but she tried very hard to heat it up with small hallogen heaters, still was not enough Why do I give 4 anyways and would I have given 5 if not for previous points: - the food is DELICIOUS. I was in Nothern thailand for a while and this is really it. Super flavourful... I had the beef garlic pepper stir fry and there was such a rich diversity in flavour. My colleague recommended me to ask extra sauce which I forgot and i should have, because it mixes perfectly with the coconut rice! - super nice friendly and adorable Thai lady. You see she put her heart in this place and creates a bond with her regulars. - we got a surprise scoop of coconut ice cream in the end! If I ever crave Thai I now know where to go for the real stuff, will keep it as a future special treat.... They also do take away!

We had a family photoshoot done while visiting Edinburgh and our photographer suggested this place…read more Chao Phraya is located on the third floor but it's impossible to take the stairs to get to it. It has the vibe of a fancy nightclub. Since we're being COVID cautious we asked the host when we arrived if we could sit outside. We were told we could but only if we were drinking. (When we left we saw several tables out there eating food.) Could we sit in the main dining area away from others? "It'll be packed in ten minutes," we were told. It was 1:30. When we left only two tables were taken. We ended up having a private room with views of Edinburgh Castle, though the view from the main dining room was better. Our server was without any warmth as well. Methinks they have a customer service problem. The apps we ordered came in groups of three for our table of four. When I eat out with a group, my servers often offer to charge a little more so we have the right number to share. Not here. The Mieng Kum with grape leaves filled with toasted coconut and peanut was really good and one of our favorites. We ordered the Weeping Beef Salad and got the non-salad version which costs more. We ended up with the Pepper Steak and it was excellent. Even though it wasn't what we ordered, it was the best dish of the day. The Thai Tacos with chicken were small but good. The Basil Chicken was fine but forgettable.

I have only been to three Thai restaurants but this is by far the best one I have been to and the food has been consistently good on the four times I have been there. I have found a firm favourite dish in the red curry, which always tastes delicious. The restaurant provides good value for money with the servings you get and also offers BYOB, which is an added bonus on the wallet. The décor of the restaurant is pretty simple but this shouldn't take anything away from the fact that this is a hidden gem in Edinburgh.

Got to admit, we didn't go in with high expectations, but goes to show how poor my judgement is! We shared some vegetable spring rolls to start, then SR had a Pad Prik Kink (with chicken) and I opted for Pla Rad Prik Monkfish, and shared some steamed rice and fried noodles. I will note that the noodles didn't work with the monkfish - steamed rice much better. THe SR loved his chicken, but had major food envy for my prettily arranged asparagus and monkfish. the fish, in a light batter, had a fantastic sauce - intensely sweet, intensely sour, intensely spicy. It was an intoxicating combination, tempered with the blandness of steamed rice. Prices were reasonable, the staff pleasant enough, it was BYOB but we didn't care and we were delighted, absolutely. A hidden gem, indeed.
