My fave breakfast place in Melbourne. Fusion Asian options like roti omelette are great quality and great value and the coffee is lush. Baked eggs have a string tamarind flavour. Discovered this place when I wanted a cafe style bfast and my mister wanted noodles :: it popped up like the solution to all our problems. Staff are lovely, ran by a Thai chick and her Scottish husband.

I've been meaning to go to Tom Phat for ages now. The thought of an Asian inspired Breakfast is quite tantalizing and twinned with a rough night the night prior, it was exactly what the doctor ordered. We sat down and were talking for 20 or so minutes before being told that the breakfast menu was over (they could have mentioned that while we were chatting). Gripe aside, we ordered from the lunch and dinner menu and everyone's dish in the group was extremely moreish. I had the pad thai and a roti with satay sauce. Both delicious. They also make a mean and spicy Bloody Mary. Next time I'll be back for breakfast time and see what that is like. The menu looked very intriguing.

Tom Phat is well known amongst its brother and sister restaurants on the Sydney Road strip but TP has something I find the others lack. Cocktails. Now not just any kind of cocktails, but the kind that make you want to scream with joy. You can't go past the espresso martini or the blue-berry-amaretto sour (if you prefer something that's a bit sweet and a bit tang). TP also offers some decadent meals for your stomach to savour. I like how TP accomodates for those of us who are gluten free and vegetarian! The braised tofu and pumpkin in red curry is amazing! So much flavour my mouth almost combusted! TP is one of the more expensive eating spots on the strip but the food, beverages and decor make it worth while to spend some time here!

I've only eaten at the Brunswick cafe once and was told specifically what to order. If heaven exists it was here on a plate in front of me in the form of a Malaysian Roti Omelette. A mouth watering dish of twisted roti, grilled bacon, topped with roasted tomato salsa and fried shallots. Simple, but completely stunning and exactly what I needed. I am not sure if it was the 12hr shift that my girlfriend and I had just performed at the camberwell market that resulted in us not breathing or even communicating during the siting, but we literally inhaled our food as though we hadn't eaten in weeks. The atmosphere was completely chilled a mixed afternoon crowd which makes up Brunswick's general vibe and culture. Both the waiter and my girlfriend warned me of not finishing the dish, man did I prove them both wrong! We teamed our meal with a glass of red and by the end of it were ready to fall asleep on the couches aided by the sunshine that was streaming through the front of the shop window. I have since had dreams about returning, if not for my slice of heaven but just to sample the other options on the menu. Its not really on my side of town but most definitely worth the drive.

It's well known in Melbourne that Brunswick is one of the best suburbs to enjoy a good breakfast or brunch, and for good reason. One must give credit where credit is due, and therefore congratulations, Tom Phat, for doing the Brunswick breakfast just a little bit differently and adding something truly unique to the scene. Tom Phat so seamlessly combines their love of Asian culinary traditions with the eggy breakfast. How about a roti-omelette - wok tossed eggs with roti, bacon and roasted tomato salsa? Or perhaps you're vegetarian and would prefer the viet eggs - eggs wok-fried with chilli, soy, fried shallots and spring onions, served up with toast. And how about a vietnamese ice coffee to go with brekky? Their menu is long and full of dishes that I've yet to taste, but I'm looking forward to working my way through to the next stop - lunch.

It's a bit harsh to judge a restaurant or cafe on one experience, especially a place that has consistently delivered in the past, but sometimes one experience can taint an eatery forever. We've had amazing breakfasts here in the past -- the roti omelette and pork chop with fried egg have been particular highlights -- and judging by the menu, I can only imagine the dinners are awesome too. The coffee has also been consistently good, though at times a bit too milky. We ate breakfast at Tom Phat recently, however, and the service really let down what I considered one of my favourite Brunswick cafes. The food was awesome, as usual (the kingfish fried rice brekky was especially delicious), but we were made to wait for twenty minutes just for menus, then a further hour for food. Really, for breakfast to turn into an hour-and-a-half ordeal is pretty poor, and it didn't help that there was no apology or even consideration of the time taken. It actually threw out the whole afternoon, and I won't go back for a good while now to punish them. Maybe they could hire a few more floor staff? The rest of the experience was fine.

Tom Phat is a lingerie advertiser's perfect restaraunt - it's pretty hip. It's technically a Thai restaurant, but they're not so much traditional Thai as they are Thai-based funky Australian fusion. And, to be honest, it's so funky it hurts. If you don't believe me, have a meal while sitting on the backless couch in the front window. Yeouch. That said, the food is pretty good. I might believe that it's not quite authentic Thai (and, really, how can I be sure?), but it is authentically tasty.

Thai on Street makes mention on the exterior of the venue that they are Thai 'fine dining' however, they really aren't - and that's probably for the better. It's a cosy, simple venue with some pretty spectacular food. The small restaurant was packed late on a Sunday night while the competitors that surround them where empty - do I bother even writing anymore? We ordered the entree 'basket', which offered one item of each of the entrees - fish cake, money bag, spring roll, curry puff and prawn spring roll. All were delicious but the money bags were a particular standout - I might just order them the next time. For mains we shared a classic Thai beef salad, which - be warned - packs a serious chilli punch! However it was balanced out by the fresh mint and tangy dressing - a really great salad. We finished with a red duck curry, which was served atop a single tealight candle - unnecessary but a gorgeous way of serving the dish! It had some incredible flavour and really hit the spot, however a dash more duck and a splash less liquid would have made it an "I'm ordering this every time" kinda dish. The perfect spot if you're after an easy after-work dinner.

I went for a dish called Pad Ped Yang from the hot plate section of the menu with a coconut rice. The dish had duck (cooked beautifully) and veggies. There wasn't as much flavour to the dish as I'd hoped but was still enjoyable. Service was quick and friendly. The restaurant itself was very busy for mid week (always a good sign) and I loved the Photos of Thailand on the walls. Loved the sign in the toilet door too (see photo). It made me feel like I was in Thailand again with the poorly translated signs I'll go back to the restaurant and try a fish dish or curry next time I think.

Of course. But it's a considerable distance away from both, so let's pretend those other two restaurants don't exist. I dined in at Absolute with a rowdy group of people. No, we weren't drinking Absolute, but quite a lot of wine went down both before and during the meal. The staff tolerated us with humor and an awful lot of patience - I think it took over half an hour for us to figure out what we wanted to order and then we confused the waitress by all shouting things at once. We were terrible customers. After the ordering debacle, the food started to come out fast and steady. The ginger fish, vegetarian green curry and masaman beef were stand-out dishes, each having surprisingly subtle flavours. I didn't really like the pad thai (a bit bland) or the beef salad (not enough chili) but others loved them - each to their own. The restaurant is nothing swish but it's clean and comfortable. For a Saturday night it was quiet - there were only two other tables occupied, but they seemed to be doing a roaring trade in take-away. All up, I'd happily come here again.

Yup, these dudes are no frills and that's where I'd guess a lot of this anti Thaila Thai sentiment is coming from. It's a bit of a divey joint, they have these crappy old poorly laminated menus and the selections are sparse. But I'll tell you, in terms of freshness and flavour, you'd be hard pressed to find healthier, more delicious take away in Melbourne. I'm speaking as a person that eats out at least three times a week, and a patron of this joint for about four years. I have never had a dud experience here, and outside of a couple of regrettable choices along the way, I will sing the praises of these lovely folk til the cows some home. A hot tip is to get a soup starter and follow it up with stir fried anything on steamed rice. They do an excellent combo of chilli and lemongrass also. Any complaint of lack of flavour here can only come from stupidity of ordering. I'm glad I chimed in when I did here, because Thaila Thai were getting a harsh wrap.

Thaila Thai was cheap and delicious and I became a bit too evangelical about this place. I've been going there for years now but since moving from Brunswick to Fitzroy the visits have been less frequent. It is still one of the cheapest Thai places to be found and the Pad Thai and the yellow fish curry (when cooked to perfection) are hard to beat. But the reality is that there are a number of places that can rival Thaila Thai closer to home. When I do get to go there, it is often a mixed bag. It is usually packed and the servers sometimes struggle to stay responsive and keep up. Nevertheless the food is more often than not incredibly flavoursome and it is BYO wine too so still a great cheap place to feast with friends. The owner and chef when he gets some down time will often come and chat to the clientele. He's a lovely bloke. I'd recommend it but I'm less evangelical as I once was.

The service was killing us with kindness. We are asked five times while still eating if we needed plates cleared- eventually we gave in and agreed. Let's be clear, this was just after they had open and there was only one other table there so they were not exactly getting rid of. Plus they kept bringing us bottles of water, which was much appreciated. When we finally did agree to have plates cleared, the waitress started stacking and mixing the left over curries together in one bowl, in a most nauseating scene for people full of curry. It was obscene man. The atmosphere is cold and lifeless. The music makes no sense and the toilet is on some sort of strange angle it makes you feel like you were drugged at the table.
