At first glance you might think Stonewood Creators is a "Texas junk shop," meant to lure in tourists or people who drape their house in trinkets. No so fast. I mean, I hear ya, but what sets this place apart is Tom and his small staff (of one?) make most of this stuff themselves. Other stuff he carries is still local Texas-made goods, at least for the most part. So this isn't bulk-ordered Chinese-made hokey Texas-wannabe bullcrap that you'd find at the airport or mall. This is the real deal. Almost everything in the store has a story. Tom will tell you all about it. He has goods for just about everyone - lots of college-themed stuff, rustic household goods (like coat/hat racks), other Texas decorative whatever... And the concrete benches! That's what drew me in the first time, actually... At first they look like fairly normal concrete benches. What sets them apart is they have custom tile pieces set into the top of them in various designs. Okay, and...? All benches are $200... Yeah, and?? ...That includes CUSTOMIZED ones. Ah, custom! Now you see why I got excited. Tom and his sidekick made an awesome custom bench for us with our last name and some A&M themed stuff, and it's AWESOME. We love it. Had it for years now. Super classy, well done, locally made, and I think the price is right for something custom and local like this. It's heavy as hell, too - this thing is stout. If you ever want rustic and/or Texas-themed and/or a sweet concrete bench for the backyard or porch, check out this local gem. Tom will tell you stories. And he's up for putting together other custom pieces, too, if you have ideas... Beth's review of this place is spot-on.

While enjoying the Dickens of a Christmas festival, I walked in to Tom Lavy's to browse. This is a pretty cool shop. Outside were custom cement benches with various logos, designs, etc. (See photos). The benches were around $200. Inside the store were various cast iron decorative items, including some in the shape of Texas. This would be a great shop to visit to find some items to hang in an office, Texas themed room or "man cave". The shop is small, but the items were fairly priced and there were plenty of them. It would be nice if the shop had a website so I could ship items to Louisiana. I wold imagine shipping on a bench could get expensive. This shop is definitely worth a trip.

A lot of the businesses in downtown McKinney don't have web sites. This one is the most frustrating because I love the stuff in this shop. I would love to shoot a link to a friend and say, "Hey, look at this", but, no. Argghh! This shop makes custom concrete benches for the garden and lots of neat little accent pieces for the home that are commonly described as rustic. It's just a little shop but he always has half a dozen different benches (they are the kind embellished with designs made out of bits of colorful ceramic tile). When you go in, you'll see tons of little wrought iron knick knacks - wall hangers, crosses, candle holders, etc. He does work in wood and metal and barbed wire. You just have to see it (it kind of defies description) but I could throw a dart in this place and hit something cool. I have a wonderful wrought iron candle lantern from here that I just love and makes a wonderful centerpiece. Something else that is cool is that he has a workshop in the back behind the counter. When the door is open, you can see him working on his next piece. He even has a dog back there with him! Sometimes we walk by and see him having a meal on a table out on the sidewalk with either family or friends (we don't know who he is dining with but we are assuming he does). You just can't find this kind of store just anywhere.

Our custom "house divided" bench we just picked up from Tom Lavy's shop. It came out better than we expected!

They have an area dedicated to children only. That's awesome. This visit I only saw adults. This is one of the most unique stores in Historic McKinney. They carry handmade, Fair Trade items from over 40 countries around the world. Every Item in the store benefits artisans directly. I find this respectful and liberating! Fair Trade decreases individuals dependency on aid in a dignified and long-lasting way. Shops like this help end cycles of poverty not only for families, often entire communities. It gives developing regions a respectful alternative that often preserves cultural crafts and traditions. This type of shop is a win-win for all. They offer home decor, gifts, women's accessories, and kids items. There is no service! You get to peruse the shop on your own! Great idea! No salesperson trying to talk to you while you shop. After purchasing a new home, my fiance and I was on a search for a grey sofa. After hearing recommendations from our real estate agent, we ventured to furniture buyers club. Immediately, we felt so welcomed as we entered and they freely let us browse and assisted us with anything we needed, completely different from other furniture stores in town. We also learned that all their furniture can be customized to the exact measurement we wanted and that is always a plus! The quality, price, and customer service is hands down the best! Delivery was also very affordable for only $105 from their Mckinney store all the way to The Colony. Ted and Drake delivered my couch and they were so nice and gave me alot of recommendations to keep it from sliding and even told me where to buy the fabric spray when I opted out of the fabric spray option. I believe they went above and beyond to provide customers with a amazing expeircne and will recommend them to all my friends and family!
