I've been taking piano lessons with Tom for about 8 months. I've scheduled a trial class and decided to go with the classical route. I think all beginners are expected/required to start with classical, but he does have other options for adults if you're just taking it as a hobby. He does listen to your music goals and will tailor his lessons accordingly. His classes are one on one, which ranges between 30 mins to an hour. If you're flexible with the day/time of the lessons, it will be easier for him to take you as a student as most of his weekend are taken up by recurring students that have been with him for years.
Tom is very technical with high expectations, so be prepared to practice your assigned pieces before the next class. He would go over all the music theory and history behind each piece. He would also make sure you have the correct hand posture, fingering, beat/count, etc. Even though he has high expectations, he is very supportive if he sees that you are working hard and is passionate about playing.
Most of his students are under 15 years old with a few adults. After the first recital he hosted at Steinway Hall, I was very impressed with all his students' piano skills. If you were there, you will know he is an amazing teacher too. read more
