I always enjoy substitute teaching in the Olentangy schools! Besides the friendly staff and…read moreteachers, many of their schools are fairly new. The teachers always leave detailed plans for the day, and I never feel awkward asking a fellow teacher, or student, if further clarification is needed. This district still offers a good selection of elective classes, especially at the high school level. I'm an avid proponent for electives - gives the kids a chance to decompress, and use their creative mind. And, besides, driving up here is a breeze - I'm going against rush hour traffic!

Were it not for the marching band, I doubt I would have enjoyed being a student at Briggs as much…read moreas I did. I really loved it, and I'm proud to have gone there, but with the school's reputation getting worse and the marching band having gone downhill since I graduated in 2005, this school is most likely on its way out. I'm going back one last time for alumni band, and to bid my high school band director farewell and a happy retirement, but beyond that, it kills me to admit that I could care less. We had a little bit of everything. An English teacher who reportedly slept with a male student and had his kid (years before I attended the school), a math teacher who slept with the senior cheerleaders so they'd get A's and graduate (it was on the local news for years after!), a football team that never wins, and a long-standing rivalry with West High School. During my years there (2001-2005), we had three different principals, and only Mr. Shreiber was worth anything. Our band director, Mr. Aaron Jackson, has been lauded through the years as the best teacher in the entire school - every teacher has a story about AJ and his band students, which we honestly can't say about any of the other teachers. I won't deny that I could've gotten a better education at another school. I might have had more opportunities at another school. At the time, though, Briggs was the best fit. I'd spent three horrific and hellish years at the absolute worst middle school in the city - on the complete opposite side of town - and going to Briggs was coming home. I really don't know how gay-friendly the school is now, but it was weird while I was there. The gay guys were out and proud and everyone accepted them. God forbid a lesbian came out at any point during her time there. There were a grand total of four lesbians in the marching band, and only one came out during high school. She dropped out because of the toxic and hateful environment. The other three - including myself - learned from her experience and came out after our respective graduations and have been treated well. In summation, Briggs was great for me while I was there, it was a good school before I was there, but after I graduated, it's gone downhill pretty fast.

The staff is always super friendly and seem to be involved and knowledgeable about all the kiddos that attend. They have a nurturing and friendly environment that's felt the moment you walk in. We've also been happy with the communication efforts, their ability to follow our specific child requirements, and their curriculum. We appreciate the daily reports and the awesome pictures too! Most def recommend!

So, I had dropped my daughter off to begin her third year of college here. (Insert tears) After…read morecompleting 2 full years & one summer term I feel I am able to write this from a parents point of view as an out of state parent. My daughter loves the quality of education that she is receiving at the college but the dorms are less to be desired (of course). The cost of college education is crazy & when you have to add in dorms, & food it's almost unattainable. I do believe that Capital is working to make improvements to the deficits in these areas even though they come at a higher cost. I like that Capital tries to provide part-time jobs for students & it's not just based off of income as some other colleges do. I like that with the school being smaller some professors seem to be more attentive to students & notice things out of the ordinary. I also like that when I was concerned about my sick child & called the president of every department that I could find the number to they all responded & checked on my child as well as returned my phone call! I don't like that sometimes the different departments dont tell each other what's going on. I believe that financial aid & accounts payable should know the same info & able to correctly communicate that to parents & students when clarification is needed. Overall, if my child is happy I'm happy.
