I had seen different…read moreopen hours online on different websites, so I decided to walk here and check out if it was open. Approaching walking down the street, I noticed a gate rolled across the driving entrance. Thinking this meant the museum was closed, but wanting to make sure as it was my first time to the museum, I walked down to the street below to see if there was another entrance. On the street below is a walking entrance to the museum grounds with a nature/sitting area. There was not a gate/barricade in place, so I walked up to the museum building. The parking lot was a good size and spots were well marked. The entrance had a sign posted with hours and entrance fees. Turned out the museum was closed both Sunday and Monday, so as I was leaving Aberdeen and heading north on Monday 8 July, I missed the inside of the museum on my July 2019 Scotland heritage travel trip. The grounds were beautiful, well-maintained, and informative on their own.

I didn't spend too much time reading every single word written, but I skimmed most things and lingered longer over the things that caught my eye. It's not a huge museum, so if you're a history buff, you might like to read more and spend a bit longer. Overall, it's a nice little gem tucked off to the side behind Vue cinema, and it's definitely worth checking out if you've got a hankering for understanding the city of Aberdeen a bit better or are looking for a few things to do to avoid a rainy afternoon but still get out of the house. I'd visit again if I had folks with me who were visiting Aberdeen!

There are a number of decent Victorian paintings and a good clutch of French Impressionists including work by Bonnard, Renoir and Tolouse-Lautrec. There is a good collection of drawings on display too, and some exquisite glassware. The building is beautiful and offers access to the handsome Cowdray Hall, and war memorial.

There is a room at the back used for exhibitions and talks. Staff are very friendly and helpful and there is a little shop where you can buy postcards, crafts and other souvenirs quite reasonably priced. There are also plenty of leaflets relating to the area in the entrance hall. One special attraction is the green train - a model of a train which is in a glass case. It is in an interesting setting and goes across a bridge - thought by some to be the route from Montrose to Arbroath - and is very old. To preserve it, the train is only run on certain days but there are usually advertised in the local paper, The Montrose Review, and in the museum. It's interesting - probably not worth making a special trip (the case is not that big!) but it's nice to see it still in use.

The architecture of this centre of design building and where it is situated on The riverside…read moreesplanade overlooking the river Tay is stunning but what it has to offer in the interior is not very much. The highlight of the whole visit was the silent disco included in the extortionate Night Fever club culture exhibition and the equally extortionate gift shop. Despite this I really enjoyed the exhibition learning about raves, techno music and studio 54 and all the interesting audio and visual exhibits was fantastic but apart from that, there really isn't anything else to comment on. I expected more of a WOW factor and I didn't get that unfortunately.

I have to say though, I was a bit disappointed with the use of space inside. The vast atrium takes up most of the building, which means there are really only two main exhibition spaces; one of these housing the temporary (paid) exhibitions, the other the more permanent exhibits. The temporary exhibit on ocean liners was really great; we loved seeing the history of (mostly) Scottish shipbuilding, and there was a good selection of artefacts illustrating just how sumptuous and decadent some of these grand liners were - although once it got past the 1930's I mostly lost interest (I was never a fan of 70's design at the time and I'm still not!). We particularly liked the video wall recreating an ocean view off the deck with renowned ships like the QE2 sailing past (good photo opp!). Of the other exhibition, the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Oak Room was the main attraction for us, and the main reason we came. But it felt like the rest of it should have been about three times the size it actually was. We actually spent some time looking around for a third gallery that isn't there. The restaurant on the top floor had a reasonable menu, but the prices were rather on the expensive side so we gave it a miss. The cafe on the ground floor didn't draw us either so we went elsewhere for lunch. The whole visit took us two and a half hours. It was worth a look, but apart from the architecture, we found it slightly underwhelming.

this is a nice little miniture railway, its a straight track and the train goes down to one end the…read moreback. my toddler really enjoyed it, but hes train and transport mad so he would. its cheap and inoffensive and is worth a go if you are near it, i wouldnt go out of my way to go again but if i am near by i certainly will. if i remember right they changed £1 per person, and there was a little (very little) gift shop selling railway releated stuff, we got some cheap little trains to keep the littles ones happy. its right by the beach and a play area and paddling pool and a short walk from an indoor amusent arcade/fair. there is parking nearby

I went here in the January with my nieces and nephews. My niece, who is nine and not feral at all, and to be fair well versed on behaving in museums / churches etc. She asked me to take a photo next to a mannequin and the women behind the desk case straight over "stop touching that!! It's delicate! Don't be ruining it!" And so on. Cripes the poor child hadn't touched it or gone near enough to think of touching it. The the women proceeded to glare and make us feel really uncomfortable. My poor niece was proclaiming her innocence! The artefacts in show are for the local size museum/castle interesting enough. If the kids aren't against it we will probably go back, to walk along the battlements and walk up the tower for the view, but, i really do hope the worker has taken a chill pill!
