The first course was some spinach leaves in a sweet sauce and it was actually better than expected. It then came with 3 pieces of sashimi which I could tell were very fresh and melted in my mouth. There was also a tiny container of tuna tartare. Lastly, for my choice of protein, I went with the black cod, which was a nice soft consistency and cooked well. The sauce on the side also added some nice sweet flavor to complement the fish. While the food was good, I do feel that 48 GBP is slightly on the high side considering the small portion sizes. The interior of the restaurant has some elegant and classy decor. That's probably why so many people come for business lunches here (plus the location). The staff are average friendliness, although the service speed was kind of slow. It was also weird that they for some reason couldn't find our reservation in their system but we were still able to get a table nonetheless. Overall, I think ROKA is a very choice choice if you are looking for a fancier Japanese meal than your typical sushi restaurant.

Roka is basically a typical faux luxury establishment of the type that has been popularized over the years in areas of low culture and/or regions where a particular cusine doesn't really exist. You know the type: pictures of beautiful people and food, tasteful font for the establishment, and a quick look at the about section of the restaurant reveals it's place as part of group founded by a bunch of executives; it's not so much a restaurant as it is an exercise in corporate branding. When you visit, you'll notice that the clientel reflects that branding design as well. Everyone here looks like they're part of a vertical strategy that includes the workers at the firm itself, the final spot on a flow chart diagram where the staff themsleves are the primary customer for the product and then a line arches back to the beginning of the flow to further inform strategic planning for more pan something restaurants. The name of this group could be called Ouroboros but that might be a little on the nose. Most izakayas on Planet Earth have better food that what you'll get here and for far less money. This said, you won't get to enjoy a space filled with the finance crowd who are all tastefully lit to ensure their Instagram selfies look good enough for them to tag themselves with the establishment. Service is slow and aloof. Skip it.

Luckily we saw a sign to this place and thank god we did! It's quite hidden, situated behind a hotel around the Docklands. If traveling by car, be prepared to pay for parking as there are no available streets to park on. However, it's less than a 10 minute walk from the closest station Excel on the DLR. I'd say it's a small but cute restaurant with a very quiet atmosphere. The menu comes with a great selection of sushi and set meals to choose from, including the usual foods you'd find in a typical Japanese restaurant. If you have space for dessert and a sweet tooth, try the tempura ice cream - I absolutely loved it! So if you're local and thinking of having some good Japanese grub, I'd highly recommend trying this pleasant surprise!

The sushi looks like sushi you've seen before, and that's as close to sushi as you'll get. It wasn't fresh, and it had no flavor. We then waited more than 10 minutes to get the check and get the hell out of there. This is the first sushi place I've been where the only Japanese person is the hostess/waitress. Don't waste your time here...at all.

The tonkotsu pork broth was very creamy, rich, and well-seasoned, and the firm noodles offered a very good taste as I ate them together with all the ingredients. The "water" taste was relatively minimal. The pork belly was a bit overcooked and falling apart, by which time I realized there was a bit less meat than I had anticipated but more of the fatty skin part. I just think the broth was a big plus and could make me comfortably say that the ramen I had was great. I know making the tare and the broth takes a long time so while I am not sure Ippudo is exactly following that process, I do see efforts in trying. Both the chicken kara-age and the takoyaki tasted like what they were supposed to taste like, with the oroshi ponzu sauce providing the chicken with a bit of new flavor on top of the already flavorful chicken. The chicken was juicy, too! Juice was flowing out of the breading as I took a bite. The takoyaki had the standard amount of octopus, which was a tiny bit. The matcha brownie was not bad, but lacked matcha flavor and was a bit too hard. It took me a bit to cut it open with my fork which I normally wouldn't be expecting from brownies. Based on the fact that it was cold, I thought it might have been frozen previously. It was well-decorated, but the fact that it was frozen most likely affected how hard it was, along with how less tasteful it was. It was still sweet, but like I mentioned previously, lacked matcha flavor. Another thing I noticed was that the service was slow. It took us a while to get out food. And despite me saying to bring the dessert along with everything else, they still brought out the dessert towards the very end and when we inquired about it, said that they were waiting on us to ask to bring the dessert. Just want to bring it up as a miscommunication instance, but totally not a big deal and it didn't impact my experience negatively at all.

However, I really enjoyed my ramen at this particular location. I had the modern tonkatsu ramen and it was both rich and flavorful without being too heavy. The chasu was tender and delicious. And, the samurai ginjo sake really made the rest of the evening pass by nicely. Service was fine.

Unfortunately, before I can get to the actual review of the food, I have to point out that it took about an hour for us to receive anything, and it was clear the kitchen had forgotten our order. That's not a critical failure in my mind, as long as it's properly addressed. However, while the food eventually came after we flagged down multiple waiters, there was never an apology or acknowledgement that they had forgotten. Disappointing. However, the food itself was good. The Udon soup with tempura was tasty, and the tempura was an interesting selection, all perfectly fried. The salmon and avocado hand roll was also tasty, and the fish tasted fresh. The tomago roll was also yummy. The decor is very sleek, with black and blue tones throughout. The restaurant was completely full when we were there on a Saturday night, so you may want to make a reservation. Overall, a decent choice for Japanese in Deptford, and right by the DLR. However, don't be surprised to wait a while for your food.
