I can't believe I haven't written a review for Tokyo Central yet, though I've stopped by here dozens of times - my go to is their sushi tray options! They have the BEST tasting salmon sushi/sashimi all around, at this price point, even better salmon quality compared to nearby sushi restaurants in my opinion. (Our Japanese native friend also agrees.) Best part is - 20% off after 7 pm!!!! But the trays get snatched up quickly. Too bad I'm not around the area at that time, otherwise I'd make Tokyo Central my weekly run for dinner. Their Kimchi Tako Poke is another regular we get, it's so good. However, recently, the only option I saw was the Shoyu Tako Poke - and I didn't like this version one bit - too hard and the flavor is not to my liking. Will never get it again. The hot food area has quite a decent selection, priced and weight by the pound, self-served. Often around 3-4pm, you may see 20% discounted packaged hot food placed out, whatever that's leftover from the lunch rush hour. Tried it a few times, but felt most of the food is heavily dosed in MSG, so I'd be selective on what I get. They also have sashimi party trays which require pre-order. Great pricing for the quality and convenience. Overall, love their sushi selection, and it's a regular stop for us. As for the market itself, there's not as much to buy, and pricing is on the higher end. However, they have a larger selection of some products that I can't find elsewhere, and sometimes their advertised specials are decently priced. read more

This is my fifth Tokyo Central (TC) store I've been to in Southern California. It has all the essential groceries you would find at any other TC location: meats, seafood, produce, snacks, kitchen cookware, etc. But...This location carried a lot more merchandise, like beauty products, tote bags, and other cute things. Also grocery and refrigerated items I hadn't seen before. This location is very clean, lots of fresh bento boxes for your choosing. They have a good frozen section and many pantry items. Prices are pretty much the same as other locations. My only experience that was blah was the cashier. She was an older lady with glasses and she seemed impatient and hurried me to move my items towards her on the belt. There was only one other person behind me, so I didn't understand the rush. But it did come off slightly unfriendly. Otherwise, it was an as expected store. Lots of parking also in their lot. read more

i don't know what it is with japanese prepackaged food, but they always hit! what's nice about tokyo central in west covina, which i'm sure also happens at other locations, is the discounted food at a certain time. love buying things on a discount, especially food!! Came today with my daughter to get all her favorites to cook this week while she's home. Love the produce section --the Asian pears are always good here, and the ginger. I appreciate the dining area partitioned off to the side for people to eat the buffet style cooked food right away. My daughter likes their sautéed green beans, grilled mackerel and fried noodles. My husband likes their sautéed unagi eel on rice. I like the tuna and salmon sushi. They always have enough cashier lanes open. If you buy food to eat there, ask for utensils from the cashier. The store aisles are a bit narrow, so you have to take turns slowly so you don't collide with other carts, but it is well organized and clean. The staff are helpful and polite. read more

Asian snack heaven! I came here to pick up a couple of items to make Spam masubi for my kids but I left with a whole cart full of goodies. And, I'll definitely be back. I wish I hadn't just had lunch before I came. Their selection of grocery items for Japanese, Chinese, and even some Hawaiian items was great. I do wish they carried some Vietnamese staples too, like fish sauce, so I didn't have to go to two stores but I know it's called "Tokyo Central" so I shouldn't expect that. It would just be nice. I loved that there is a fresh sushi and sashimi area, bakery, and deli, so you can pick up prepared foods. There's also a great seating area to enjoy your goodies on the spot. We still love coming to this place. We were able to find some new items that we have never seen before. And of course we got a great deal on items that we don't usually get. It was very busy, so the customer service and the register staff were busy with a lot of people coming through. I love the fact that we were all able to get out of there relatively quick. Great place to buy ready-to-eat meals! There's a big sushi selection for sushi lovers. I like their sandwiches and ice cream selection too. The aisles are kind of narrow, but you will get used to it hehe. I think it is because they try to put as much merchandise as they can. There is a section near the entrance that sells food a la carte and then you can either take it home or eat at their dining area. There is a microwave oven and water dispenser for your convenience. There is a little shop inside that sells plush toys and other novelty items. You can also see a few claw machines too. I think this location is better than the Yorba Linda one. We went here and there was a delay on putting out their ready-to-eat meals. Great customer service so far. A lot of parking spots outside. read more

The supermarket is generally clean and they have security guards there during business hours. During lunch hours, they have a hot food section to make you own lunch. You can grab a box to fill it up and weight it at the cash register. They also have a selection of grab and go lunch entrees, such as beef bowls, curry bowls and sashimi salads. They offer ready made sandwiches, sushi rolls, onigiri, and many others items. Tokyo Central offers a big section to have lunch with 10+ tables for any one wanting to eat inside the market. PRO TIP: If you come by around 7-7:30PM, all the ready made food as I mentioned above are priced at 20% off! This is a great time to stock up and grab you favorite items. Also the hot food sections has packed containers to sell after hours. Most of the time, this hour at Tokyo Central gets packed as everyone wants to grab the discounted items. Whether we come here to eat or grab some groceries and cool snacks/drinks we enjoy dropping by from time to time. Lately, we purchase their sashimi grade salmon to make our own poke and we love their affordable priced meats for grilling. We're lucky to have this location not too far from home. read more

A great Japanese grocery store that I always find myself coming to not only for groceries, but for lunch! I usually come here for lunch as there are great ready-to-go options for sushi and rice dishes. My regular selections include the bluefin tuna bowl, seared scallop nigiri, seared salmon nigiri, handrolls, egg sandwich, real crab California roll, and much more. For the quality and price of the sushi, it definitely competes with going to a Japanese restaurant. Sometimes, I prefer eating here and their dining section rather than going to an actual restaurant. Also, don't overlook their hot food section when they have it available. It's buffet style but they do charge $10.99/lb of food. They have a pretty good variety of food available to choose from. The cheese tonkotsu, umami karage, and the curry fried rice are some of my favorite. The service from the staff are what you expect from a grocery store. They'll answer any questions that you may have about finding anything from the grocery store. You can find anything you really need from the grocery section with an emphasis on Japanese cuisine and kitchen appliances. The dining area that they have available is very clean and is well maintained. There's plenty of seating available for groups and single diners, but if the place is busy during a time like lunch rush; finding a spot to sit may be challenging! I'm actually pretty happy that there's a Tokyo central that opened near us so we don't have to drive all the way to Gardena for this market. It's a cute market located in a very large plaza. There's so many affordable selections to choose from such as fresh seafood, already made food, marinaded meats, gifts, cards, houseware, facial products, Hawaiian snacks, chocolate, and much more. There were several vegan options available you just need to know where to look. The tofu spring rolls , snacks , veggies, fruits, dumplings, and much more. They had a promotion going on where you match your ID number for Your membership and you may win a prize. My last digit matched so I got a candy. Took a while by the customer service employee figured out how to give the prize to the person in front of me who won $10 gift card to Tokyo central for having the last two digits of the membership match the winning number. It's just confusing because the cashiers don't scan the barcode so I'm guessing no reward points and everyone even non members gets the special membership pricing. First time here, was super excited to see the selection of food and groceries here. Purchased frozen yakisoba noodles. When I opened the bag, I was hit with the most fowl rancid smell. They sold me food that had gone bad and was frozen solid. Meaning that the food had been left out to spoil then refroze it. I didn't even take a photo since I rushed it into the trash outside. I won't be back, for fear of getting horribly sick. Super disappointing. read more

They made a few changes and i just noticed it's up and running now. Their rice ball station has completed remodeling and you can see the workers make them through the window, they still have their hot bar with potato, tempura and ramen. A while ago I also noticed they now offer party trays. I still come here for sushi bowls. They do not have chopsticks, wasabi, ginger and soy sauce out. You just have to remember to ask for it at the register. During the summer I signed up for their membership/card program, at the time they offered a discount if you spend a certain amount but I don't think it effects regular grocery prices. I never check in my card at the register, I could be wrong, but I don't see any points earned or discounts available when I do check in. Being part of their membership I do get their emails regarding new items or promos for the month. They don't spam you, I only get them once a month or so. read more

There's also a little water station to grab some water as well! The service is good and the workers are nice! Definitely recommend to come here and especially later for discounts! They also have a little section in Tokyo Central that has anime/character/fandom section to get little Knick knacks! I recently went to Japan and this store surprisingly has a lot of similar things from Onigiri to cute cellphone covers to Miffy items to yummy snacks! One of my favorite markets to go to because they have so many fresh sushi options. They also have a hot food option during lunch time. It's self serve so you get a box and get whatever you want and it is priced at $10.99/lb. They have a scale so you can check how much you are getting. They have grilled mackerel, tempura, agedashi tofu, chicken, ribs, and more. I haven't tried it yet but they all look good and fresh and I always see a lot of people getting their hot food items whenever I am here during lunch time on a Saturday. I like getting their prepackaged sushi and their rice balls. They are always pretty fresh and decently priced. If you go after 7pm, they are usually 20% off but there might not be a lot of options. If you come around 10:30am, there will be a lot more options. They also have sandwiches and mochis. They have a small bakery next to the sushi/hot food items area as well. They have a good variety of snacks and Japanese hair and skincare. I like getting udon and Japanese seasonings from here since they are affordable. They also have other Asian items that are not Japanese and a few Hawaiian products too. Reserved a big sashimi plate from Tokyo Central for my family's New Years Eve dinner. Everything was packaged beautifully and the sashimi was very fresh. I still remember when this was a Marukai, lol. Marukai is the same company, so it's interesting to see how they've changed to accommodate the new generations. Parking is okay. It can get pretty busy, but we've been able to get parking every time with no issues. Tokyo Central has their deli area that seems to be the main attraction for most folks. Sushi, bentos, warm foods, snacks, etc. Love the deli area. They also still have the other sections of the store that have fresh veggies/fruit, dried goods, sauces/condiments, snacks, meats, etc. Definitely never as busy as the deli section, but they are well-stocked with a good amount of variety. Have always liked how clean it is in the store, too! Prices are decent. read more

I've been wanted to check out this Tokyo Central location for a while now, but I'm never in this area. So today, was my first time checking it out on Sat, 10/5/2024. My husband and I came by right before 2 PM and boy, was this place packed. The aisles are a little cramped but I loved exploring the whole store. From the ready made food bento boxes towards the front of the store, to the sushi grade fish, Wagyu beef towards the back, to the instant ramen and snacks in the middle, to the matcha/teas/drinks, to ice cream, tofu, and natto in the back. I particularly loved perusing the Japanese makeup, haircare, and skincare aisles. I considered buying a few items, but am still going through my Japanese haul of skincare and haircare (straight from Japan) from last year so I decided to hold out this time. Please note that the items at this store are definitely on the pricier side unless they're on sale. We ended purchasing some natto, frozen udon, face washes, a creamy melon soda, and chili oil. I can't wait to come back to grab more! Customer Service: We didn't have too much interaction with the staff. The only interaction was during our check out time. Everything went well and the guy was nice. No complaints here! Parking: Very hard to find parking. We had to circle the lot a few different times. We ended parking a little further closer to the Tesla charging station. Please note, these spots were small! Overall, I still had a great time (despite the super crowded store). Love that they have pre cut sliced packed of meat for sukiyaki or Shabu shabu !! Today bought a floral insulated bag and Char shu Sauce jar. I could easily spend hours in Tokyo central and the good news would be that I could either grab a bite from their ready to eat section and sit at the dining area and then shop or I can finish shopping and then eat at the dining area after working an appetite from exploring all of the things they sell here! I'd avoid coming on a Sunday tho, this place is like a Costco on a Sunday afternoon - it gets PACKED. I think it would help if they had baggers or people helping the cashier, the line can get pretty long. Long enough to crowd the aisles and keep people from shopping things in those aisles. The ready to eat section is a gem on its own, from poke bowls to teriyaki chicken plates to fresh sushi, soup and more! We might have broke the golden rule of grocery shopping - we went while we were hungry and boy did we over buy ready to eat items hahaha but no regrets here! The umami karage was a favorite, and the veggie croquette was fried perfectly (how the heck do they get it so crispy without it feeling oily!?). They have such a huge selection of everything and a wide variety of offerings that I'd recommend letting yourself explore non perishables before getting to the refrigerated items! 8/22/24 I' ve been meaning to visit this store since my Yelp friends have mentioned it. It's convenient because we just finished dinner at Lan noodles. Lately, I have been on the lookout for chocolate matcha covered almonds or anything chocolate & matcha anything. I was disappointed not finding this combination. Initially I was looking for Ichiran noodles and found them on sale . Additionally, I was also looking for chasu for a ramen dish I wanted to try & make. I didn't realize how much snacks there are on display at this Asian inspired store, many of which are, of course, imported. There is a huge variety of sweet & savory snacks, loads & loads of them. Hubby was waiting again, so my time to explore was limited. I visited most of the aisles, giving a cursory glance at what this store has to offer. Fortunately, I found & bought a few items of interest, yam noodles, matcha mochi, mochi covered hazelnuts, chasu, etc. Prices are somewhat fair. Most items are written on foreign languages but some are in English. The beauty supply dept. looked interesting but I ran out of time. There are a myriad of spices & sauces I would like to check out when I return in th near future. I find the fresh produce section to be limited (fruits/veggies). Interestingly, they were selling these "shiny" grapes for $19.99, oddly expensive for just a few grapes. They have grab n go section for cooked food in a refrigerated area, sushi, salads & the like. The cashier was friendly, we exchanged pleasantries, which I thought was really nice & unexpected. This is not something I would experience at 99 Ranch or Hmart.
