Hearing the cracking boom of a glacier calving, spying seals resting on icebergs, and watching the eagles soar overhead was simply amazing. And of course, flotillas of adorable sea otters were in abundance. The National Park Service rangers boarded the ship early in the morning, and held programs all throughout the day while the ship was in the park's waters. They also have the NPS park cancellation stamp and a small gift shop area set up. The rangers were quite knowledgeable and truly seemed like they loved their jobs. I guess you have to be if you're stationed here all season! One of the perks that they get is being able to eat as much as they want from the cruise ship dining.

We made a scenic stop at the Margerie Glacier, then on to Glacier Bay. Margerie Glacier is a 21-mile long glacier situated along 12,000+ foot tall Mount Root. It is one of the park's most stable glaciers, neither receding nor advancing over the last several years. Lamplugh Glacier was so different with its deep blue ice contrasting sharply with the dark rock of the surrounding cliffs. We were told that the color comes from ice so densely being compressed that it absorbs all wavelengths of light except blue. The park's glaciers are spread across 3.3 million acres, and many are visible along the shores of the bay itself. Margerie Glacier and Grand Pacific Glacier, both located at the head of Tarr Inlet, are among the most notable, often showcasing dramatic calving events. There's nothing quite like the thunderous roar of a calving tidewater glacier to remind you of the mightiness of nature. Unfortunately, we did not get to witness this on our trip. We spent an entire day at the glaciers. We were in awe of the towering mountains, icebergs, and majestic glaciers stretching as far as the eye could see. When God created this part of the country, he made it magnificent. It was so thrilling to experience this from the deck of the Queen Elizabeth. To be able to see the icebergs floating in the water, the seals on the icebergs, and mountain goats on the mountains. We were also struck by the beautiful shade of blue of the water. What also was exciting was to have the Park Rangers giving us a live commentary on what we were seeing. They provided us with insights into the park's ecology and history, enhancing the overall experience.

Summary: Food is very, very good, staff is friendly for the most part, but the rooms are less than clean. The good: the food is very good (for Hoonah or anywhere else) and this is one of the only places in Hoonah to have a sit-down meal. They bake their own treats like muffins, brownies, cookies, etc. which are great for breakfast or dessert. The establishment is right on the water so you can stroll out at anytime and appreciate Alaska's beauty from just steps outside the door, or perhaps even from some of the rooms. My room faced the road so I am unsure of this. The bad: my room was one of the dirtiest I have ever slept in. There was a coffee stain on my wall that looked as if someone threw an entire cup/pot of coffee at the wall and no one so much as looked at it let alone cleaned it up. Nasty is the only word that comes to mind when contemplating my room cleanliness. That being said, I do believe that I got the last room available during my stay, and I was happy to have it as there was nowhere else. Perhaps I got that room that all hotels/motels have but keep as a last resort to occupy. The bathroom cleanliness also left something to be desired. In all fairness, I did not think the rest of the establishment was overly unclean/dirty, but I will say that the standards in Alaska are on a different level than the lower 48. Perhaps I'm just a prissy, spoiled mainlander. Dunno.

The gondola takes you from the cruise terminal all the way up to the top of Mount Hoonah, and the views along the way are absolutely stunning! You get sweeping panoramas of Icy Strait, Chichagof Island, and the surrounding waters. The cabins are spacious and have huge windows, so you get a full 360° view of the landscape. The ride itself is super smooth and relaxing, taking about 10-15 minutes to climb the 2,000 feet to the top. Each cabin fits around 6-8 people comfortably. Once you reach the summit, there's plenty to explore--an observation deck, hiking trails, outdoor restaurants, gift shops, and cozy coffee spots. It's a great place to hang out and soak in the scenery. Tickets were $49 for adults, which gave us unlimited rides for the day--same price as what the cruise charged. We really enjoyed it! The ride was peaceful, and the views both going up and coming down were just gorgeous.

My grandson and I just returned from a week-long trip hosted by Taylor Charters. Greg has established a masterful collection of 8 different boats and 5 first-class accommodations in the charming town of Gustavus (it is a hard A, not ahhhhh). Greg owns these boats and spares no expense to ensure that they have reliable propulsion (ours was a North River aluminum boat that had nearly new Dual 250 Yamahas.....) and Captains that had years of experience fishing this area. Note - Boats that are worn out get sold ......he had recently bought two brand new boats! Taylor Charters, as a team, seamlessly integrates the entire experience from the pickup through the fishing (and fish handling) to the delivery to the outgoing flight (which keeps your fish cold, even through overnight layovers if needed). The entire team was friendly and accommodating, even arranging for whale watching and Glacier Bay side trips as desired. We stayed at the Majestic inn - Josh and Christina were excellent hosts. The place was immaculate and since Christina is a trained chef with close connections to locally sourced fish and meats, the eating was as good as any high restaurant in San Francisco. Sautéed scallops as an appetizer? Of course. I had never been to Alaska - going via Taylor Charters was as great an experience as I could have hoped. I will be back as soon as I am able. My teenage son and I were only in Hoonah (a.k.a. - Icy Strait Point) for a day as a cruise ship stop. Eric did not waste time and we were on the water fishing post haste! We were going for salmon that day and Eric did not disappoint...we enjoyed our 1/2 day and landed 4 salmon (coho and pink). Eric drove us back to the ship and we worked-out the details for processing and shipping our catch back home. The morning after we returned from our vacation, a Fed Ex delivery with our cleaned and vac-packed salmon was delivered. Captain Eric be "Da Man"!
