As soon as we dropped anchor at a location Chris scoped out for us, I caught a HUUUGE halibut and the excursion only got better from there. For the remainder of the trip, every passenger continue to hook fish one after another and that continued until everyone was exhausted. I know catching fish is not guaranteed on any trip, but based on my own personal experience, combined with my research of other customers reviews; I would venture to guess your chances of catching a fish with him at the helm is as close to 100% as humanly possible. Capt Lucas kept us on top of the fish and moved spots when bites "went cold". In addition to Halibut (x5), we hooked up on Dusky Rockfish (x2) and Cod (x2). While catching fish, we enjoyed passing Humpback whales and got lucky enough to see a small pod of Orca passing thro Our boys (12yo and 8yo) thoroughly enjoyed it; very interested in picking up a fishing pole when we get home. Although it was only supposed to be a 3.5hr fishing trip, our guides extended it to ~5hrs to insure we got the full experience.

I believe they can usually fit up to 13 people on one tour but we got lucky with only 7 people in our group (aka lots of space on the boat to move around). Teresa drove all of us from the port to the dock, and we were then welcomed by her son Casey who is the captain. I later learned from Teresa that Casey studied fishery in school, and boy was he knowledgeable about all the different wildlife out here in Hoonah! While on the tour, we were able to witness porpoises, bald eagles, sea lions and, of course, whales. Casey takes you to different spots where you are likely to spot whales, and we ended up seeing a whale come up VERY close to our boat! It was absolutely mesmerizing to see and to capture. Additionally, the boat itself was super comfortable, and they even provide water, hot chocolate, and various chips for you to snack on :) If you are thinking about booking a whale watching tour while in Hoonah, do it with Glacier Wind! Teresa and Casey are both amazing, and my family had a fantastic experience overall.

We saw *tons* of whales - you could tell they were working their butts off looking for them, driving us all over the bay! We even saw a mom and calf once! (Tons of bald eagles, too! No bears, sadly - they showed us a spot where you can spot bears sometimes, but it was still a bit early in the season.) Funny enough, it was about the same price as the cruise ship's whale watching group, but it's a *much* different experience going out on a boat with only a handful of people plus the crew. Great people, too - you can tell they love what they doing, showing people the bay and all the really cool sea life that inhabits it. Super comfortable boat, too. Definitely glad we chose to go whale watching with them. Only one tiny complaint - I saw reviews mentioning homemade salmon dip! Not that we exactly *needed* any more food, coming from a cruise ship, but at least on our specific trip, they only provided water and hot chocolate. Seeing a bunch of whales was obviously the main reason we were there, but I *did* also have a side goal of eating as much salmon as possible while I was in Alaska, too, so I was a tiny bit sad. Somehow, I managed to book the wrong tour. I thought this was a walking/hiking tour to look for…read morebears, but it turned out to be a three-hour drive in a van with limited space, windows that did not open, and was either too hot for some or too cold for others. The driver/tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, at best, some of us saw the rear end of a bear running off the road into the bush. The rest of us saw nothing. There were some eagles at a distance and a buck far, far away. We stopped several times and spoke to other van drivers, and it seemed like sightings that day were very infrequent. While it's not anyone's responsibility (tour company or cruise line), it would be helpful to guest comfort if we were reminded to bring bug spray with us when leaving the ship. After we took the tram to the waiting area, everyone was eaten alive while waiting for their next mode of transportation.

I must admit that I wanted my traditional battered & deep fried fish & chips. Although my halibut was fresh, it was also dry and just OK. We saw plenty of humpbacks, sea lions, orcas, deer and a pack of bears! We were so lucky to see the bears, according to the captain. He made sure to stop so we could snap some photos. It was worth every penny. After the tour, we returned to Misty Bay Lodge for lunch. They advertise what they are serving that day as a special, while they also serve whole pizzas and pizza by the slice. Hoonah is a small place, so your options are limited for dining out. It appears that locals and tourists eat here daily. Hope (the owner) was a great host. She answered all of our questions about the area. She suggested that we split an order of fish and chips (fresh halibut!) for lunch and she was right- it was plenty for both of us. We each enjoyed Alaska APA and amber ales. So good. And I'll admit it- I never watched Alaskan Bush People, but now that we are home we have watched a couple episodes just to see Hoonah and Misty Bay Lodge! Pretty cool.

We got to follow a humpback right away and also saw some bears on the shore which gave us bragging rights when we got back. Plus they pick you up in a LIMO! What a fun extra touch. Our boat had a total of 6 people and there was plenty of room on the back of the boat for us all to fish. The captain and his mate (a golden retriever named Cyrus) were great. The captain in conjunction with their two other boats in the area did a great job keeping us on the fish. We had a blast and caught 15 halibut between the 3 of us and 31 total on the boat, the biggest being a 32" 15-16lb halibut that we sent home for a few nice dinners. The trip was great and would highly recommend these guys if you are in the area. Just be aware, the fish shipping company (an outside company) is quite expensive to ship fish back home, but they were extremely convenient to use and did provide great customer service.

There were still a few salmon but, apparently, it was too late in the season for bear activity as we did not see a single bear. Our guide, Stu Mills, went out of his way during the 3.5 hour tour to drive around to spots where bears might be found. Still no bears. However, Stu is a native of Hoonah and he educated us with endless stories about his life, family, native culture, local plants and vegetation used for medicinal purposes (the Devil's club ointment really works!). While the bears were disappointing, Stu's expertise made the trip very much worthwhile.
