My grandson and I just returned from a week-long trip hosted by Taylor Charters. Greg has established a masterful collection of 8 different boats and 5 first-class accommodations in the charming town of Gustavus (it is a hard A, not ahhhhh). Greg owns these boats and spares no expense to ensure that they have reliable propulsion (ours was a North River aluminum boat that had nearly new Dual 250 Yamahas.....) and Captains that had years of experience fishing this area. Note - Boats that are worn out get sold ......he had recently bought two brand new boats! Taylor Charters, as a team, seamlessly integrates the entire experience from the pickup through the fishing (and fish handling) to the delivery to the outgoing flight (which keeps your fish cold, even through overnight layovers if needed). The entire team was friendly and accommodating, even arranging for whale watching and Glacier Bay side trips as desired. We stayed at the Majestic inn - Josh and Christina were excellent hosts. The place was immaculate and since Christina is a trained chef with close connections to locally sourced fish and meats, the eating was as good as any high restaurant in San Francisco. Sautéed scallops as an appetizer? Of course. I had never been to Alaska - going via Taylor Charters was as great an experience as I could have hoped. I will be back as soon as I am able. We made a reservation to get picked up at Glacier Bay National Park and do a bag pick up on our way to the airport. Everything was smooth and we even got to see a black bear on the drive since the cars are nice and quiet. I will definitely use this service again next time I visit Gustavus. Natalie's communication was excellent in the weeks leading up to our trip and I found her personable and flexible in plans - something you don't often see with some charters. We were fortunate with incredible weather, a beautiful ride out to Chichagoff Island and a phenomenal day on the river catching salmon in an unbelievably beautiful part of Alaska. Natalie was friendly and patient and when she needed to be - direct and to the point when a bear wandered a bit close to our group. Our boat had a total of 6 people and there was plenty of room on the back of the boat for us all to fish. The captain and his mate (a golden retriever named Cyrus) were great. The captain in conjunction with their two other boats in the area did a great job keeping us on the fish. We had a blast and caught 15 halibut between the 3 of us and 31 total on the boat, the biggest being a 32" 15-16lb halibut that we sent home for a few nice dinners. The trip was great and would highly recommend these guys if you are in the area. Just be aware, the fish shipping company (an outside company) is quite expensive to ship fish back home, but they were extremely convenient to use and did provide great customer service.

The Glacier Bay boat tour was a disappointment. This boat is too small for the number of people…read morethey pack on, and there are no outdoor seating areas to use during the cruise. Over six of the seven hours of the cruise will be from your seat inside the boat, looking out the windows which have limited visibility. The boat also picks up Kayakers 30 minutes into the start of the cruise, and to my astonishment they stacked the kayaks at the front of the boat, blocking the front windows for everybody sitting there. I raised this concern to the staff on the boat, they acknowledged the issue, but did nothing to correct it.. When we got back seven hours later, I spoke to the front desk manager (Ryan Rivers) at the lodge where we bought the tickets and inquired about a refund. Rivers looked at the picture I had and said "if it was me, I would've gotten up and moved to a different seat". I informed Rivers that all perimeter seats were taken, and that the onus should not be on me, but rather they should place the kayaks flat on the deck and not stack them obscuring everybody's view. Rivers then gave me the "deer in the headlights" look when I asked his opinion on whether this was intrusive to those there for a sightseeing cruise. He refused to consider any sort of refund, even though he agreed that the visibility was impeded by the stack of kayaks, based on his response. The boat does have an upper deck platform, but that is only available while the boat is stopped, which is less than 10% of the time of the cruise, and limited to 30 people at a time. So when we did stop to see a whale or wildlife on the shore, the majority of people weren't able to go up to the upper deck to see it (we had over 70 people on the boat). When we did arrive at the glacier, we were over a mile away, so that was nothing spectacular either. So if you take this seven hour cruise, realize it'll be like sitting in a bus for seven hours. Save the $600 and enjoy the views while you're on the Alaska Marine Highway ferries. We did do a three-hour kayaking tour with the Glacier Bay Sea Kayaking Company and that was fantastic. So if you're in Gustavus, that's what I would recommend.

The scenery and wildlife were breathtaking and both Blain & Mo were so knowledgeable about all the birds, animals & plants we encountered along the way. We made new friends as we joined 4 strangers who became friends right off the bat! This is a first class trip and we can't wait to sail with them again!
